DESERVING WOMAN Makeover When she was growing up, Jay Calloway was always told: Ask questions about others and you’ll make more friends. After nearly 45 years of being humble about herself, she initially didn’t think she should take the opportunity to be our Deserving Woman Makeover Contest winner for North Texas, and that’s just one reason she deserves this lifechanging experience. After earning her doctorate in education and then teaching at the University of North Texas for several years, Jay learned how important it is to educate as many people in the world as possible. She said, “I got my Ph.D. so I could open a school and be an advocate for children. It’s wonderful but you’re fighting [the system] … and not everybody is pro-education and recognizes the value.” This go-getter, unselfish mom from Keller, who now lives in Lucas, is hoping to change our country’s current political views on public education—not only for all American families, but especially with regards to other parents who have children like Jay’s own seven-year-old daughter, Samantha. “She attended public school last year for first grade, but she was diagnosed with dyslexia this summer,” Jay said. “A lot of kids have dyslexia, but in public school, it’s budget cuts, budget cuts, budget cuts.” While Jay didn’t want to give up on the public school system, she felt a change was necessary. Samantha is now in the second grade at a private school with a strong program for dyslexic students. Between community activities, volunteering at school and taking care of her family, like most women, Jay struggles to find time for herself. As a result, Jay neglected her body and continued to put her family’s needs ahead of her own. “I just got in the habit of doing the same thing every day and not doing much about the way I looked,” Jay told us. Before her makeover, Jay found herself over 40 and several pounds overweight After her mother, father and sister all died sequentially a year apart over the past three years, Jay could hardly drag herself out of bed to take her daughter to school. “Even though Sam was two-and-a-half, I was just so sad, horribly sad. Then, a year to the day (that my mom died), my dad passed away. So for another year … I mean, I didn’t really brush my hair, I didn’t brush my teeth … When someone dies in your family, the whole family falls apart.” It wasn’t until a year ago that Jay said she began to realize, “I have got to pay attention. Sam’s in this private school, in a really affluent area, and everybody lives in beautiful houses, but we are the funky weird ones. I’m a little bit older than most of these other mothers. They’re in their late 30s and they’re all this big around (holding up her pinky finger) and I’m the only one who doesn’t have perfect highlights and wear tons of jewelry. I’m thinking, ‘I’ve got to get with the shtick.’” Jay not only wanted to look better for herself and her husband, but for her daughter, too. Several months ago, when a stranger mistook Samantha for Jay’s granddaughter, something clicked: It was time for a change. “For this makeover, I thought, ‘Oh my! This could be SO so good!” Jay said. “It could have a ripple effect for our whole family.’ And you know, maybe some other person will say, ‘I can change and be better,’ because it makes you feel so much better about yourself when you take care of yourself,” said Jay. To start her makeover process, first Jay changed her eating habits and routine by visiting Sarah Dunnahoe, Julie Dudek and the team at the Metabolic Research Center. Regarding her experience and diet change, Jay said Sarah, Julie and their team have been a great help. “They care how people feel and think,” Jay said. While she just started The diet a few weeks ago, in the short time she’s been on it, Jay has already lost 15 pounds and been taught how to eat, what to eat and how bad sugar is for the body. “You talk to someone [at the Metabolic Research Center] and then think to yourself, ‘Why would you do that? Why would you just eat tons of butter on your bread?’” Jay said. “This morning, I would have loved to have a latte, but all of that sugar is so bad for you. So instead I just drink something healthy … It’s like finding Jesus; you get saved again.” Julie has been working with Jay the past month to help her achieve weight loss. “I gave her a specific menu,” Julie said. “She was on our Meta-Slim program where she was put into a ketosis state where you’re able to burn fat at a chemical rate, which means you’re burning fat a lot faster.” From the high-nutrient protein supplements, multi-vitamins and oils Metabolic encourages to promote weight loss, Jay was able to think of eating in a different way and redefine her relationship with food. “They got me on the right plan to lose weight and keep the pounds off!” Jay said. Now that her weight was managed, Jay needed to look as good as she felt, and what better way to do that than going to Juvanew Med Spa? Our makeover partner and anti-aging expert Terry McBay made Jay look 15 years younger by relaxing Jay’s facial muscles with Botox injections for the fine lines and wrinkles around and between her eyes, on her upper nose, forehead and around her lips. Then, she took one syringe of Juvéderm and outlined Jay’s lips to add fullness. Terry also used Radiesse deep tissue filler to add volume around Jay’s face, under her eyes, on the sides of her nose and mouth and along her jaw line. In addition to the Botox and Juvéderm treatments, Terry also performed a Pixel laser peel to resurface and tighten Jay’s skin and erase some sun damage. “As we age, our skin starts to sag and look tired,” Terry said. ”We lose the collagen that makes us look young and Botox tightens the muscles in our face. [On Jay] we just did some quick facial sculpturing with laser, filler and Botox—she got the works!” Jay's enthusiasm is contagious. “I feel great! A lot of people I know have been saying, ‘Wow, this is a huge difference! You hair looks darling, your face looks perfect!’ Now they’re all going to rush out and try Botox!” she said. Making Jay’s smile stand out was something Dr. Robyn Abramczyk of Smile Ranch Dentistry partnered with us to achieve. Dr. Abramczyk retracted Jay’s cheeks, put in a dental dam to protect her gums, placed professional grade teeth whitening/bleaching gel on her teeth and used the high-powered Sapphire plasma arc light to whiten her teeth. Now you can see Jay’s happiness with her made-over self reflected through her bright smile. That Elegant Touch Salon & Day Spa’s hairstylist Kari Epperson gave Jay layers and highlights accented around her face. Kari said, “I used a higher volume to lift her roots and blend them to the end. I really texturized the layers to give her more volume up top, and the texturizing softens around her face. We also lifted her two levels lighter than her natural color and put in lowlights that were two layers lower. That helps to get the full spectrum as well so that when her natural color grows out, it looks better.” Keeping up with her new look will take some time, but thanks to our partners at Warthan Dermatology, Jay can cross shaving off her to-do list once she completes a series of laser hair removal treatments. That will be an average time savings of an hour and a half a week. To make her fashion-forward look complete, we called in fashion expert and professional stylist Jeanette Chivvis to give Jay’s capris-and-a-tee-every day wardrobe a facelift too. “I wanted to still give her that kind of free feel but update it and make it look hip-mom,” Jeanette said. “She still wants to look young but age-appropriate. I went for a boho-chic look with clothing provided by Clothes Mentor that will make her fit in with the younger moms.” By wearing warm, earthy and organic tones like this burnt orange shrug, Jay is able to still wear looser-fitting clothes, but Jeanette said Jay has to belt the shrug to show off her figure, give her body definition and reveal her slim waist. “Jay loves pretty, flowing things but they still need to be belted to show off her cute figure! A capri just makes you look shorter and wider. If you’re going to do capris, wear heels. But capris and crocs should be outlawed!” For date night or civic functions, Jeanette pulled a chic black and white combination from Maurices. This outfit puts a dressier spin on Jay’s typical look and glams it up with a sassy heeled booty. Again, the belt adds structure and bans the slightest hint of frumpy. Underneath it all, the TC Torsette bodyshaper, available at Dillards, keeps any possible bulges under control. “Foundation wear is a must and is often overlooked,” said Jeanette. Paige Anderson and her makeup artistry made Jay’s eyes pop by using taupe eye shadow contoured on her eyelid crease and blending it upward to give depth to her eyes. Then, Paige highlighted Jay’s brow bone and used a vanilla-colored pressed eye shadow in the inner corner of her eye to lighten and bring out Jay’s sweet baby blues. After lining her top lash line with black eyeliner and adding mascara, Jay was ready to hit the catwalk! She exclaimed, “Paige is a miracle worker!” After the makeover, Jay reflected and said, “It was all a little overwhelming, but I’m excited now. I feel really good. It was really a blessing and just got me out of a big funk about life. Now I feel great!” The process has come full circle for Jay. Seeing her today compared to how she looked and felt at the start of the makeover is truly uplifting!
