Experience the whirlwind of Richard Strauss’ bravura as he bursts upon the world stage with the story of Don Juan. The Chicago Philharmonic’s new artistic director Scott Speck drives bows to move at blurring speeds, woodwinds’ fingers to fly over their keys, brasses to call out in youthful exuberance, and percussion to explode, representing this ultimate Romantic figure. Next, accomplished soloist Kuang Hao Huang performs the rarely heard, one-movement Piano Concerto No. 3 of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Discover this lesser-known masterwork of one of the world’s most beloved composers. Then we celebrate the centennial of Igor Stravinsky’s landmark ballet The Rite of Spring, which changed the history of music forever. One could argue that with the opening soaring bars of a solo bassoon, the Romantic Era of music ended then and there.
