Eating My Way Through University City: Dough to Door

University City Patch's resident foodie shares the scoop on her latest dining experience at Dough to Door in University City.

You can order pizza, Chinese, even sushi for delivery. But what about dessert? It’s then that you’re left to your own devices…whether that’s running out for ice cream or raiding the bag of chocolate chips in your pantry. That is, until Dough to Door came to town!

Located in the Loop (567 A Melville Ave), this cookie shop not only serves up freshly baked cookies, it also delivers them straight to your home! After trying to order once before and opting not to wait almost an hour for the cookies (on a weeknight, around 8:00 pm), I made a second attempt on a recent Saturday evening.

Dough to Door offers pre-made cookies for the traditionalists (including snickerdoodle, peanut butter chocolate chip, chocolate chocolate chip, and oatmeal raisin) but also gives customers the option of creating customized cookies to suit their tastes. First, one must decide which type of dough: plain, chocolate, oatmeal, peanut butter, or sugar. Then, up to three mix-ins can be added to the cookies. The list of possible mix-ins is impressively extensive, with everything from cinnamon chips to Kit Kat bars to marshmallows to pistachios.

Custom cookies are sold by the ½ dozen ($8.95) with the option to get two different types within that half dozen. In my order I got three with plain dough, macadamia nuts, coconut, and white chocolate chips, and three with oatmeal dough including dark chocolate chips, dried cherries, and walnuts.

I made my order, paid over the phone by credit card (including the delivery charge and tip—coming to a total of less than $12), gave my address, and waited.

About thirty-five minutes later, just as promised, there was a knock on the door. The delivery man pulled a box from his insulated carrier and handed over the cookies. My friends and I immediately dug in, noting how warm they arrived. Each cookie was large—about three to four inches in diameter—and lightly browned. Both varieties were chewy and buttery, satisfying our urge for a sweet treat.

My only complaint? Our cookies seemed to lack mix-ins. When I make cookies, I love to stuff them with chocolate, candy, and nuts. While these cookies included the mix-ins we ordered, a few of them seemed to skimp on the overall number of toppings.

All in all, we were more than satisfied with our Dough to Door experience. An avid baker, this isn’t a service I can see myself using regularly. However, I think it’s a great option for college students in the area who don’t have access to kitchens or individuals who can’t seem to make a batch of cookies without burning them. It’d also be a fun gift idea—just call in an order of cookies, pay for them over the phone, and have them delivered to your friends or family (note, according to their website, Dough to Door delivers to the 63130 zip code south of Olive, Parts of Clayton and the Central West End, The East Loop, Washington University and Fontbonne Campuses.)

Dough to Door is open Monday (6pm – midnight), Tuesday & Wednesday (2pm – midnight), Thursday through Saturday (2 pm – 2 am), and Sunday (2 pm – midnight), offering ample hours for you to get your cookie fix! Out and about in the Loop? Stop in for cookies—you don’t have to get them via delivery!
