    About the Business

The Majestic Restaurant carries on the Kansas City traditions of great food and great jazz. Featuring some of Kansas City's best dry-aged beef, chops, and seafood and located in the historic Fitzpatrick Saloon building in downtown Kansas City, The Majestic Restaurant offers a dining experience like no other. Enjoy a great steak and fine wine in our main dining room alongside a grand bar dating back to 1910, or have dinner in our lower level jazz club, the site of an actual speakeasy during prohibition, where some of Kansas City's best jazz musicians play every Friday and Saturday night. An extensive wine list, creative cocktails, and a sinful selection of delectable homemade desserts provide a fitting accompaniment to the meal.

Is the downstairs Jazz club still open? I checked the website and the calendar did not have any musicians scheduled for Feb 2022.

      A:

Yes, still open and hopping. The management is sleepy but the staff and overall team are as good as ever !

      Kid friendly??? Can kids go

      A:

I'm a father of two (ages 6 & 10), and I would say it's fine for kids but not necessarily great. I don't think there was a kids menu. My kids would eat there, but they aren't picky eaters. Hope that helps!

      This place is 4.5 stars.

During my visit to Kansas City, I had the opportunity to try a lot of different eateries. On this occasion, I wanted to find a "one off" steak house--not part of a chain; not too corporate. "The Majestic" fit the bill.

From the street, the building is kempt but doesn't look too special. Inside, there is an attractive bar. A piano player was performing that night, providing mood music. The layout and décor gave the illusion of a different era.

My visit took place on a Sunday, so it wasn't too busy. I dined alone at the bar. Service was good. It was slow enough that the bartender was able to tell me a little bit about The Majestic's evolution through the years.

For my meal, I ordered: the wedge salad ($5.00); 32-day ribeye, with a baked potato and creamed spinach as my sides ($83.50); and a Bombay Sapphire gin and tonic ($11.00). With tax of $11.92, my ticket was $111.42 before gratuity.

The salad was crisp and refreshing. Everything on the plate was arranged well. (A photo is included.) The steak was prepared per request, and the quality of the beef was very good. The size of the potato was appropriate (not too small, not too large). The cream spinach had a very nice texture; the flavoring was good.

Kansas City offers a lot of dining options. The Majestic is worthy of consideration. The food was good; the service was good, and I felt the place had nice atmosphere.

I was so excited to eat dinner at this restaurant, had heard so many good reviews about it. So for starters my husband had the crab cake. He was completely unhappy with it and said it tasted as though it was frozen and microwaved.

We both had the 12oz KC strip steak for our entree. I have never been so disappointed with a steak dinner. It was beyond chewy and lacked of flavor. We basically felt as though we were just eating a big piece of meat that was grilled.

My husband and I have been to plenty of steakhouses. So we definitely know a good steak. This place by far was the worst. This was our first visit and we definitely won't be going back.

I was here for a friends birthday. This good ol staple of a fancy steakhouse reminiscent of the old days when dining was the height of something special for occasions only.

The architecture is fantastic in this old building with a bar built out into the middle of the floor!

The service was amazing! We had a fairly large party and it took a team to wait on us but they clicked quickly and we were never at want for anything.

The food... I got the steak... and delicious! My old fashioned was also fantastic. The sides... well... this is where the menu could use a little updatinging. The sides were just plain sides... good but not really memorable.

Price... this place is expensive. It is even expensive for what you get. So for me it loses a star just due to not having an extremely strong Value. But, go try this one for yourself and let me know your thoughts!

This is such a cool steak house. It has 2 floors each with music. The main floor is bar like with a few highback wooden booths.and a piano player. The downstairs feels speak easy like with a great 3 piece straight ahead Jazz group. Totally a blast to dine and listen to jazz. Great waitstaff and pretty tasty food. Steaks very all in the 85.00 range and include 2 basic sides. As soon as you upgrade your sides and you are adding another 12-15 bucks. If you add a drink or two and maybe 1 dessert with tax and tip you can easily get to 300.00 for two. Just a warning. Steaks were good but not stellar. Still good for a special occasion in you are in downtown KC.

Very cool venue with live jazz in the basement restaurant. Service was very good as per steakhouse. Steaks were pretty good (not quite NYC best]. Nice dessert for my wife's birthday.
      An enjoyable experience.

Loved the food, service, history, and ambiance. I liked it so much I brought friends by the next night for drinks at the bar 30 minutes or so before closing time but there was was refused service since there was one couple left dining and I guess staff wanted to go home early.

Classy vibe in an historic downtown building. Beautiful bar area (jazz pianist) upstairs and jazz groups downstairs (certain nights). The steaks come with sides which is nice (our favs were fries and grits). And there are some reasonable wine options. The premium steaks (18oz ribeye and 10oz bone-in filet) were good but not awesome. Server was nice and attentive. And the hostess was super helpful accommodating our late arrival because of flight delays. Enjoyed our evening.

The Majestic is one of my favorite steakhouses in Kansas City. I've had the pleasure of eating at The Majestic twice in recent weeks. The first time was upstairs, and the second time was downstairs in the jazz lounge. The live music was really good, and it is cool to see our Cowtown and jazz history combined in this super cool historic building.

Both times, the service was impeccable. I thought the first time was super impressive, as one server waited on our group of 10 people. I'm not sure if she even had another table, she was that attentive. The second time, the service was also really good, but it was hard to beat the first experience.

My steaks were perfectly cooked both times. I had the KC Strip and the Prime Strip. The Prime Strip was nearly fork tender. On the second visit, my dining companion ordered the Prime Rib medium, and it came out almost blue. I think that was a pretty big miss in my opinion, but she said it was good. I did not enjoy the bite of it I tried. It was really rare, a tough chew, and almost gristle-like in the texture.

Between the two visits, I tried a lot of the different sides. The roasted garlic grits were good, but super garlicky. The loaded baked potato is a classic, and I really enjoyed it. I think the most decadent side was the lobster mac and cheese, but so good and worth it. Most of the other sides were as good as you'd expect at this price point.

      I'd highly recommend this place.

The Majestic is one which could be easily overlooked as it appears very unassuming from the street. Upon a recommendation from a coworker, we made reservations. Admittedly, I was hesitant as we drove by while looking for parking, and had we not had a recommendation from a coworker, we would have driven right by and continued to another restaurant. The Majestic's curb appeal was abundantly modest, enough that one of us went on a reconnaissance mission to check things out while the other parked the car and stayed with it in case The Majestic was a bust.
Upon entering, it was obvious that it wasn't a bust. The meek appearance was contrary to the dining room. Perhaps The Majestics' simple outward appearance coincides with its history. Dating back to Prohibition, the building has a flavorful history. We arrived a little early for our reservation as that's what our day allowed, and we were hungry. Because the dining room was nearly empty, they were easily able to accommodate our early arrival.
Our server, Thomas, was knowledgeable of the building's history and some local history to go along. Upon our inquiry, Thomas shared with us much about the building history. Gangsters, Prohibition, Speak-Easy, the bar having been imported from New Orleans, and more. Put all those nuggets of history together, and it makes sense while the curb appeal is lacking.
Thomas, we menu knowledgeable as well. He answered our questions, respected our pace, and did not push cocktails or deserts. As is expected, he spoke of them but was not pushy in trying to upsell or achieve a 'perfect check'.
The dining room was nice and quiet (it was 5 p.m. on a weekday) and proper lighting. Many 'fine dinning' (especially steakhouses) can be very poorly lit. This was not the case.

The food...well, let's be honest. You only go there for steak. And it was a very good, fresh steak! We elected to share the dry aged, USDA prime, American Wagyu Porterhouse. It was seasoned perfectly and cooked to perfection. A true Porterhouse (with a strip and filet). However, don't waste your money at The Majestic on their dry aged steaks. They are only aged 14 days, which is not long enough to make a difference!! At 14 days of dry aging, there is no discernable difference from wet aged. If dry aged is what you are looking for, they do offer one steak that was aged 28 days. Otherwise, you will have to go somewhere else. Don't waste your money of their dry ages steaks.

Would we go back? Yes. Would we consider other steakhouses, absolutely.

Great service, beautiful ambience and of course excellent food and liquor selection! Wasn't my first time and suggested Majestic for dinner. Out of 7 people, it was the first for 5 of my colleagues. All 5 were very pleased with my selection.
