Readers of Eater usually have the same question: Where should I eat right now? As always, the Austin restaurant scene remains as exciting as ever, as new places have continued to open. With all of this in mind, Eater is updating its monthly heatmap (now in its 145th iteration), highlighting a mix of exciting restaurants, trucks, and food services.

This April 2024 update is a big one since many places opened for or during South by Southwest. There’s returning Chinese restaurant New Fortune 2, new Korean spot An Nyeong K Tofu and BBQ, Korean fried chicken destination Donkey Mo’s (with two locations!), Olamaie’s new casual Texas icehouse Redbud, fine-dining establishment Mexta, and L’Oca d’Oro’s new pizzeria Bambino.

Hooray! The beloved Chinese restaurant known for its dim sum offerings is back in Austin after its 2021 closure. Now located near the Anderson Mill neighborhood since March 2024, the casual restaurant still under chef William Wong offers all of the classic dishes from dumplings to bao to noodles and so much more. There are indoor dine-in services.

Si Jie Special Noodle [Austin]

The Northern California restaurant mini-chain expanded with its first Texas location in January 2024. The far northwest Austin casual restaurant is the place for trying out loads of Chinese and pan-Asian noodles, noodle soups, dumplings, and kebabs. Takeout orders can be placed online or in person; there are indoor dine-in services.

As Austin’s omakase scene gets bigger and bigger, one of the newer contenders is this Japanese restaurant hidden within an office building up in North Austin as of January 2024. Co-owners executive chef Michael Carranza and pastry chef Danielle Martinez offer South Texas inflections to the coursed kappo-style meal, which means dishes Japanese shrimp atop a tamale or nigiri with citrusy marinades and sauces. A new casual Korean restaurant took over what had been vegan restaurant Citizen Eatery in the Brentwood neighborhood in March 2024. The menu is not vegan, offering lots of tofu soups with varying spice levels and mix-ins like mushrooms, beef, pork, chicken, seafood and/or noodles. The rest of the menu includes Korean appetizers and barbecue meats. There are indoor dine-in services.

Suzi’s Chinese

After a period of retirement, legendary Austin restaurateur Suzy Yi is back doing what she loves: running a Chinese American restaurant. Enter: this new casual Brentwood restaurant as of January 2024. On deck’s an array of standby Chinese American dishes for lunch and dinner, like General Tso’s chicken, orange beef, and soups. Takeout orders can be placed in person; there are indoor and outdoor dine-in services.

The long-awaited Korean fried chicken restaurant is back with not just one but two whole locations in Austin in March 2024. First, there’s this standalone restaurant in North Loop and then there’s the second one down in Zilker, which took over what had been Korean barbecue restaurant Jjim. Chef Youngmin Noh focuses on his crispy-saucy Korean fried chicken, available in all sorts of formats and combinations (think wings, tenders, thighs), alongside rice cakes, chicken dumplings, and other smaller bites. Takeout orders can be placed online for Airport Boulevard and South Lamar; there are indoor dine-in services (South Lamar’s indoor dining room opens on Friday, April 5).

Craft Omakase

This intimate Japanese restaurant — helmed by three Uchiko alums — opened in the Rosedale neighborhood in December 2023. The thoughtful 22-course omakase spans simple yet exquisite nigiri as well as composed cold and hot dishes like the tuna tartare tart and a shrimp bisque. And rounding out the dishes are sake- and wine-based cocktails, as well as sakes, beers, and wines. Book reservations online; there are indoor dine-in services.

Another day, another omakase in Austin. The city’s newest offering comes from a mentee of the illustrious sushi chef Daisuke Nakazawa as of early March 2024. The Olamaie group breathed new life into the former BBQ Ramen Tatsu-ya/Contigo restaurant space in MLK in March 2024, resulting in this casual Texas icehouse. This means easy burgers, sandwiches, and snacks — plus an appearance by Contigo’s crispy green beans — paired with cocktails and beers, to be enjoyed on its wide-open patio. There are indoor and outdoor dine-in areas.

Wee's Cozy Kitchen [Downtown]

The much-acclaimed Malaysian restaurant that had been serving out of a gas station up in West Campus is back in action as of March 2024 in a new home and neighborhood. Now chef Wee Fong Ehlers is serving her ever-so-classic Malaysian dishes (think rendang and nasi lemak) out of the Royal Blue Grocery on Congress Avenue. Takeout orders can be placed in person or online; there are indoor and outdoor dine-in areas 

Mexta Restaurant

Two notable out-of-town chefs — Jonatan Gómez Luna Torres and Mikel Alonso Garcia, who both ran lauded high-end restaurants in Mexico — turned to Austin for this finer-dining Mexican restaurant in downtown. This means high-end Mexican dishes with Austin and Texas touches, along with cocktails and other drinks, served in the former Simi Estiatorio space. There are indoor dine-in services.

The L’Oca d’Oro team got into the pizzeria game with their new casual Govalle restaurant in March 2024. The smaller round sourdough pies come in an array of topping combinations, such as the Paddington-approved Coppa Cabana with coppa, orange marmalade, chile, and mozzarella; or the carby Pretty...Pretty Gouda with potatoes. There are also snacks and sides like fried olives, salads, as well as sweets, cocktails, and wines. Takeout orders can be placed online; there are indoor and outdoor dine-in services.

Austin’s newest bar is an ode to New York City taverns in Central East Austin, courtesy of Nickel City’s Travis Tober, which opened in December 2023. The warm space serves up classic tavern dishes and cocktails, from the hefty prime rib to fish and chips to oysters Rockefeller to Rob Roy drinks. There are indoor dine-in services.

It’s finally here: Austin barbecue truck LeRoy & Lewis opened its long-awaited physical restaurant in February 2024 down in the Garrison Park neighborhood. The new-school approach to barbecue remains the same, but now the menu’s expanded. There are your staple meats (sliced beef aka brisket, pulled whole hog, lamb barbacoa), sandwiches, tacos, sides, and so much more. Takeout orders can be placed in person; there are indoor and outdoor dine-in areas.
