Nowadays, it seems the environment is on everyone’s mind—from politicians to fashionistas and everyone in between. Following this trend, I paid a visit to ION Studio, New York City's first, and leading, green salon. I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical of the environmentally sustainable salon, because hair was certainly not at the top of my list when it came to taking care of the earth. But I was wrong.
As soon as I walked in, I knew I liked its feel. Simple and low-key, it still manages to be fashion-forward, stylish. Once I donned my robe, I was led downstairs to the hair-washing station, where they use specially designed rocking chair–esque seats for balance against the sink. It was the most comfortable hair-washing I’ve ever experienced—the chairs tip to the perfect height for no neck soreness.
After a washing-and-conditioning treatment, hairstylist Dante Pronio told me more about the salon while tending to my hair. Not only is 85 percent of ION Studio decorated with recycled materials, it also runs off of wind power, and uses all-green cleaning products. They used to recycle their hair, donating it to a program that helped clean up oil spills, but at this point there is no demand. Dante assured me that the hair would go there when needed.
ION also runs a school of sorts for licensed hairdressers. They have several classes that teach different techniques, and they allow the students to work on real models. Talk about multi-tasking!
The salon has been frequented by famed stars such as Kim Kardashian, Olivia Wilde, Carrie Underwood, Christy Turlington, Diane Kruger, Naomi Watts, and Zac Posen—and it’s no wonder. ION may be more laid-back and understated than your typical hair salon, but the service is just as excellent.
When my time with Dante was over, I was pleased with the result—my hair looked effortlessly shiny, styled in beach waves that lasted for hours despite a disappointing evening of rain. It’s a salon to which I will definitely be returning. Make sure to check it out—since it’s green, you’d be basically helping to sustain the world, one hair appointment at a time.
