Southern Cooking and Sweet Tea at Chazz's Place

This new Marietta restaurant offers homemade soul food that will hit the spot just right.

Chazz's Place is a new addition to Marietta. The prices are fair, the food is flavorful and unique, and the service makes you feel like you are visiting a friend.

Service: The owner, Al, is personable and welcoming. He is eager to tell you about his menu and his recommendations. The food comes out fast, and I mean fast.

Location: The restaurant is about two miles from Marietta Square. It's set out of the way of some of the hustle and bustle of the city. Don't worry; there is plenty of parking.

Chazz's Place is clean and recently remodeled, as the restaurant had its grand opening about a month ago. The atmosphere is comfortable and modern. The restaurant seats about 55 and has an intimate feel.

Food: The menu is easy to navigate. Tilapia, salmon, catfish fillet, fish and grits, shrimp and grits, steak, BBQ ribs, pork chops, smoked turkey wings, and chicken (BBQ, grilled, Southern fried)—no matter what you order, you know you are in the South. The prices on the fish and meat sections of the menu range from $10 to $14.

All the meats are boneless, except the ribs, and are a clean cut. The meat is cooked to order. It's "healthy Southern cooking."

The BBQ ribs fell off the bone. They were sweet and faintly spicy in the back of my mouth. I loved it. There was almost no fat on the ribs, always a plus.

The sides are a big part of the menu with green beans, yams, mashed potatoes, rice, fried okra, collards, macaroni and cheese, BBQ baked beans, coleslaw, black-eyed peas, potato salad and more.

These sides are not what you would expect, though; they're better. The yams had a flavorful punch. There was a big "Wow" factor, the traditional zing with an extra pow.

Everything is homemade, and all the vegetables are prepared with a vegetable base. This preparation is something you can actually taste. The collards were fresh and satisfying, and that is coming from someone who doesn't typically eat collards.

Drinks: I am not from the South, but the sweet tea is something you won't find often in the North. Dark, fresh and enough sugar to know it's there without feeling like you are drinking sugar water.

Fountain drinks, coffee, hot chocolate, hot tea and unsweetened tea are also on the menu.

Dessert: The peach cobbler was good and thick, something that I haven't experienced very often but I enjoyed.

Bottom Line: This soul food kitchen is a great addition to Marietta. Whether you're a family looking for a night out, a group of friends getting together or a couple looking for a place to relax, Chazz's Place is a good find.
