This review is a long time coming. I've been hitting up Stand-Up Scottsdale for two years now and this place has never let me down. We went back again last night (Saturday night), for the late show and brought another couple with us. What a great place to bring your friends for a fun and entertaining night out.
Howard was spot on last night. If you all don't know Howard Hughs, well you should! Head over to Stand-Up and check him out. He is not only the owner but also one of the best comedians and M.C.s out there. Last night after the show ended and the place cleared out, Howard reopened the bar for us as we weren't ready to go! Thank you for letting us stay for a few more vodka's and beer.

I have been to Stand Up Scottsdale many, many times. The comics here are always funny with a variety of entertainment styles. The owner, Howard Hughes even has a stand up routine that entertains the crowd!
The food is from Sugar Rae's BBQ kitchen. While they offer more than just BBQ I have to admit that I always seem to gravitate towards the BBQ because it is tasty.
The drinks are good and at an affordable price.
The staff is attentive and provides good service.
I recommend you stop in for a show and be prepared to laugh your ass off!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

Lots of fun last week. Great comics, great service (Chris was my server) and great drinks.
Tonight I am having dinner here. They just changed food providers to Sugar Rae's. I have no info on this company but we'll see!
They have a larger selection of BBQ. They also offer 3 salads and 3 flatbread options. They have a variety of typical BBQ joint sides: baked beans, Mac & cheese, cole slaw......
I ordered the 3 meat plate with pork, brisket and a hot link. My sides are baked beans and Mac & cheese.
Food is good. Chris was my server again so service was also good! - Aug 30, 2015
I have been here a few times, and had a good time. However this last visit was a bit disappointing. The acts were not as good as in the past. On a positive note, there is no longer a two drink minimum.
Added after abuse from owner:
I tried to keep things nice and offer some constructive criticism. But the owner Howard is too much of a baby to even see that. So if you want to see an ego manic owner try and do stand up comedy, this is the place to go. Otherwise, check out one of the other comedy clubs in the Phoenix area.Helpful 10Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

We;ve got a club wager going on, Jamie. Here's my guess...will you let us know what it is so we can announce the winner?
**I'm going to say you're a 2 cat guy, Jamie, and most probably the date of Lauren F.**
The few times were good and this time "was a bit disappointing" and you give 2-stars?
Strong review, jamie.
On a positive note, along with the cosmetic changes coming to the club to include a huge new patio and interior, we will be instituting a 1-drink policy just to keep the weirdos out.
On a side note, here's an interesting lesson on averages: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbdPq0-THKM
Yelpers and anyone who considers yelp, consider the yelpers first and ask yourself if they make any sense what so ever. We're a comedy club with original content each week. Each of you are individuals and, yes, its true, some weeks may be less amazing to you than others. That is just how life goes sometimes. But I can assure you that reasonable people--the kind of people you'd invite to a dinner party--have a great time here. This is a club for people you'd like to invite to a dinner party. Not for people who are excited they don't have to buy anything. Which are you? - Michael C.Lubbock, TX171333436May 25, 2015
Fun night out for a date or a small group. I like to checkout the lineup on YouTube if I don't know the headliner. Wear your thick skin, like many comedians Howard the owner/host works out his emotional issues on stage (mostly anger). I was happy he did a set because he often is just the host.
If you haven't come in awhile it may be time to try again. The service was great, which is a big change. The crowd, therefore the energy is different for the late show. Seems like you get more energy later.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

jajaja...great review, Michael!
We definitely encourage honest comedy...jajaja But I can tell you that I'm happier than I've ever been so I Imagine my emotional issues may begin to show themselves differently--probably crying jaja
Thanks for the good words about the service and the show and, yes, the late Saturday show is typically the most liberal in all senses.
Thanks for the review and see you next time!

We've been to Stand Up, Scottsdale a few times now and have had a really good time on each occasion. The comedians are entertaining and always seem to do their best to put on a good show. We like that there's no drink minimum like some other comedy clubs but we typically end up getting a few drinks anyways. The Psychotic Episode is absolutely delicious!
Keep a lookout for their specials - The last time we went, we got 2 tickets, 2 drinks (beer, wine, or well drink), and popcorn for a very reasonable price. If you're planning on going a night there is a special, it will be busy so reserve your seats ahead of time & arrive early!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Aug 25, 2014
When you spend $15/ticket and there is no two-item minimum, you really gotta think about the complaints you have before you decide to write a yelp review on here. Seriously, you spend $15 - and you think by spending $15 and maybe $4 for a Voss water because the club doesn't give free waters, you think the club IS the joke and you should knock your rating down one or two stars? C'mon!
For the value, this club definitely delivers. I've went to this club many times now and sometimes comedians are freaken "my stomach hurts" hilarious and sometimes (very few) are not, but you definitely have to give it up to them for trying. I'm sure it can be hard to be in front of people trying to make people laugh. What's worse are the hecklers! Oh, the hecklers - they think they are so funny, calling out stupid things, high fiving each other, and thinking they are so cool - when in fact, all of us in the audience think they are d-bags who just ruin the experience. Oh, and what about the people who just can't take a joke??!
There was this one asian girl, sitting in the front row, and one of the comedians decides to joke about asians and she was not having it. She completely ruined the whole mood by saying that her grandma passed away....I mean, how do you lighten up the mood from that??! You're in a comedy club, you can't take things so seriously. I'm asian - there are stereotypes and people joke about it to me all the time even outside of comedy clubs and sometimes, I must admit, I fit in some of those stereotypes. I mean some of us lost a grandma too even a father for that matter, but if they were alive, they would be laughing at the joke too. It's funny!!
The club is on the corner of 5th Ave and Indian School, you definitely can find parking. If you can't, you are not looking hard enough. The waiting room is small and cramped, but you aren't waiting for that long so just grab a drink and be patient. In the waiting room/small room, there is one bathroom/stall for each gender - Ladies, if you had a little bit too much to drink that night, here's a little tip.. It's one bathroom...For one person so I suggest you lock the door because I don't think it automatically locks for you! I've walked in on two different women on two different occassions. I wasn't embarassed because I wasn't the one who forgot to lock the door. I'm sure they were though..
The owner normally comes up and speaks - I really don't think he has an act and the first time I came to a show, I didn't know he was the owner so I was thinking, "This guy is so unprepared." Then when I realized he was the owner, I thought, "Man, this dude is funny because he just says whatever comes to his mind." After coming to a few shows, you just think you know him...He's 45, he's the owner, he had a stroke, they were on bar rescue.. So what if he's told us ten, twenty, thirty times? He's proud, damnit.
Overall, I'll be back. Just remember: You can't ALWAYS take things too seriously especially at a comedy club.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0Business owner information

Leslie, what an awesome review, thanks!
I don't know if I told you, but I'm 45...and I had a stroke ;-)
Normally I have a lot to say to reviews but your's is fair and on point...and, to let you in on a little comedy secret, although I do perform more "in the moment" comedy than many comedians, most everything I say is planned out; it takes a lot of time to make it seem like I'm just winging it...its not easy to look so unprepared! ;-)
We love fans like you; glad you're part of the ride and thanks for helping us get the word out!

See you soon H.H.
Just kidding, by the way... this place is a freaking blast- and we are excited to have another fun-filled night of laughs and debauchery at Stand Up!, Scottsdale! !Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Jul 26, 2014Previous reviewWe had a BLAST! Superb line up last night, we laughed uncontrollably from beginning to end. Staff was extremely friendly, attentive, and fun. Props to HH-- Love that this place is owned and operated by a local.. keep doing your thing Howard.
For an amazing night out, and a great alternative to some douchey Scottsdale nightclub, do yourself a favor-- grab some tickets to this place and go laugh you a$$ off. Leave your ego and hater-ade at home.
See you guys soon!

Went to see a one night comedy show featuring Vince Morris. Vince was hilarious, and SOME of the opening comedians were funny. Overall, good show.
The funniest part of the night: The club charging $4 for water (denying me tap) and serving dessert in paper plates. Really??
Other than that, things were good.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Business owner information

Christina, thanks for coming out while you visited here and your review.
The "warning" on the price of water may be a bit dramatic, but that's ok. I'm from Texas, as well, and that's kind of how we like things.
To address your points, so that people have accurate information.
1. That plate and bowl was not paper; we would never use cheap paper plates.
They are a fancier Styrofoam; a sizeable upgrade in fance from paper.
NOTE: it should have been served in a tin like our Suga Rae's BBQ; I'll make sure that doesn't happen again ;-)
2. Yes, we only sell bottled water.
As we're the only comedy club in town without a two item or drink minimum, we can't have free water drinkers (besides, they tend to not be very fun to have in a comedy club-I'm sure you had something to drink aside from water, but many wouldn't if they could...always folks trying to get something for free and we like staying in business).
Comparatively, at the only other two bonafide comedy clubs in town, you'll pay $4 (it actually might be $5, I don't recall) for 375ml of Vos water. We sell the 500ml of Vos water for $4...that's a 125ml more of Nordic Water for the same price (or less)! That's a great deal!
Also, for any non-drinkers, be "warned", water, to include beverages are $4 and there are no free-refills. We like to think our show is worth $8 of any beverage (if you choose to have two).
Normally, I cringe at a 3 star rating, but given your other reviews, I'm satisfied with it (you're tough but fair). If you get back to Scottsdale sometime, hit me up for tix and I'll have a bottle of water waiting ;-)
Thanks, again, and for anyone reading this, we are a business with the intention of staying in business.
We provide a great comedy experience and the best comedy value in this city.
We ask for responsible and reasonable patronage.
We appreciate guests like Christina that enjoy the show, support the club through food & beverage, and take the time review. If you ever have an issue in this club, I'm always here and always available. Thanks for coming out! HH.
