At this protest, we will demonstrate our view of the American flag which we have stood on, shredded and burned in protest of the outrages of the U.S. system of capitalism-imperialism and what it does here and around the world. In Chicago, a group of city council members are calling for a special council meeting to censure Alderperson Byron Sigcho-Lopez for speaking at a protest while even remotely adjacent to the ashes of an already burned American flag. In reality, the flag had been burned by a Marine veteran of U.S. wars in Afghanistan at this protest over the Democratic National Convention (DNC) coming to Chicago and the U.S.’s blood-soaked backing of Israel’s genocidal war against Gaza. Is it a legal, constitutional right to burn a flag? Absolutely. The 1989 Johnson V. Texas landmark decision was won by fellow RevCom Gregory “Joey” Johnson making clear that flag burning is protected speech under the first amendment. Is it RIGHT to burn that blood soaked American rag? HELL YES. Why? Because the US is founded in slavery and genocide against Black people and Native Americans and the towering crimes of this country have continued ever since. Because beyond the horrors that continually go on in this country, the U.S. is the top imperialist oppressor in the world – number one in plundering and destroying people and the environment, which is the driving force behind the lethal mass migrations that "immigrants" are forced to endure in order to survive. We do not have an "immigration" problem, we have a capitalism-imperialism problem. Just since World War 2, the military and the ‘intelligence agencies’ of this country have carried out invasions and massive bombings, coups, assassinations and other acts of depraved violence - slaughtering millions of civilians in Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, Iraq, Afghanistan, and many other countries, with the widespread destruction forcing millions more from their homes and homelands on top of being the only country to ever use the atomic bomb, incinerating hundreds of thousand of Japanese civilians. And now the American made carnage in Gaza. So why the push to smack down an alderperson? The representatives of the ruling class in this country and (their little flunkies on the Chicago city council) are desperate to prevent opposition to its fundamental interests from spreading and afraid of “losing the allegiance” of masses of people. This is true now more than ever when the whole country is already being torn apart by deep divisions, with bitter clashes right among the ruling powers. This is a time when a real revolution could become possible to bring forward an emancipating future. From Gaza... to the increased danger of nuclear war... from the Southern border to the attack on abortion ... as the revolutionary leader Bob Avakian says, “We can no longer afford to allow these imperialists to continue to dominate the world and determine the destiny of humanity. And it is a scientific fact that humanity does not have to live this way.” This is why the RevCom Corps for the Emancipation of Humanity - Chicago has stood on, torn up and burned the American flag in protest of what the US does here and around the world as we organize for a real revolution. We will continue to defend others who do so (or are attacked for even being present) as well. A whole different way of living is possible: a whole different way to organize society, with a radically different economic foundation and political system, emancipating relations among people and an uplifting culture—all of this oriented to meeting the basic needs and fulfilling the highest interests of the masses of people. With the urgency this situation requires, we declare and we demand the existing capitalist-imperialist system and institutions of government in this country must be abolished, dismantled and replaced by a new socialist system based on the Constitution for the New Socialist Republic in North America, authored by the revolutionary leader Bob Avakian.
