Stopped by here for a friends birthday. What a great wine bar!
The place is really cute. The decorations are different are a great conversation starter. The service was great. We were able to enjoy different wines. They also have a upstairs area but were weren't able to go up due to a private party. We plan to go back again for some great wines. I may have to go on Wednesday for the secret menu.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Apr 15, 2012Updated review
694 officially gets bumped up to 5 stars by me. I went for dinner on my birthday and had an amazing experience. It was not as packed as my last visit and when not packed to the brims, I love the atmosphere here. The servers are very knowledgeable about their food & drinks which makes for a pleasurable dining experience. I love the setup of 694 and the booth-tables. I'm a fan!
Once again, I had a glass of bubbly The Saint - best champagne ever, I swear!
We had an amazing cheese and meat plate and I'm happy to say they had all cheese and meat selections in stock unlike the last time I went. It's succcccchhhhh a good plate and selection of cheeses they have. I got their grilled cheese once again because I know it's the best grilled cheese in the city. It didn't fail me one bit. And we made sure to go on a Tuesday for Tuesday BLTs! They have the best BLT I've ever had in my life.
We ended our meal with the brownie flight for $10 which had three different kinds of brownies. The types are always changing but on the night we went, I liked the toffee brownie best. Yum! They were a bit more dry than I usually like but the flavor was very good.
694 has THE best cheese plates, THE best BLTs, THE best grilled cheeses and THE best champages. Plus the prices aren't bad to boot. I wish lived more closely to 694 because it is beyond amazing. Next time I need to remember to get a grilled cheese to go for the next day because I'm madly in love with it.
694, I heart you like crazy.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0Feb 4, 2012Previous reviewYum, yum and more yum. This place is pricey but everything they have is just delicious! I went this past Wednesday night with my friend which happened to be the last night before a Groupon they had out expired. It was insanely busy & food took an insanely long time to come out. I'm not going to hold that against them because it probably is the not the norm. I came here with my friend because we had their BLT last year during Baconfest! It was amazing and the people working had a fantastic vibe just dropping bacon into people's mouths & playing around. Loved it.
So now we're in the actual restaurant ready to give it a try. We were seated at a very tight table in between two other tables. The guy on one side of me had his pimp hat & jacket where I was meant to sit, so I moved it over a bit and his entire table was beyond wasted with a very nice, older gentleman doing weird dance moves. The guy sat on the other side wouldn't stop name dropping celebrities to whoever he was drinking with & was on his cell phone the entire duration of their time there. I digress.... So aside from my unhappy positioning of where our table was, this place is beyond loud. I had to talk very loudly so my friend could hear me & everyone around us was yelling (partly due to their intoxication & partly due to the blaring music). When we left for the night, a couple of guys walking by said, Whoa, that's some loud thumping music. I agree. I love me some loud music but I want to be able to talk at normal levels.
To start off with, my friend got a red wine (he had a couple different wines throughout the night that I tried and were both smooth and tasty) and I started with "The Saint" champagne. $10 a pop for a regular sized champagne glass, but it might just be the most delicious champagne I've ever had! We started with the butter flight (Butter & Salt $8) which scared me a bit & made me think Paula Dean would love & hate something like that at the same time. It was super cool and each butter was delicious! One was a bit cheesy and that was hands down my favorite. The bread it came with was moist & tasty as well! Then we were brought out our meat & cheese choices. This was beyond awesome and came with a lot of little extras on the plate like wasabi peas, dates, interesting soft fruits that served as jam, other dried fruits and honey! It was a nice little surprise to have these additions on our plate. Cheese and meats are $7 each and we went with the Goata Aged Raw (had a little sweetness, I love goat cheese!), Delice de Bourgogne (soft & creamy, my absolute favorite with some bread, honey & fruit for the night) and the Salumi Salumi. I could honestly do without the meat & eat cheese all day, everyday. My friend really enjoyed the meat portion of the platter though, as well as everything else. We rounded out our meal with a grilled cheese for $10 (which took insanely long to come out---again, giving them the benefit of the groupon doubt---but we sat there aimlessly for about 30 minutes waiting). This grilled cheese was the best grilled cheese I've ever had. No question. It had two cheeses on it-manchego & cheddar-and the bread is panini style plus it had fruit on it. It was supposed to be quince and I'm not sure if that was what it was but man, that really enhanced the sandwich immensely. The flavors were in perfect marriage and it comes with honey for dipping which even further made my tastebuds dance around in thanks to me. It must have looked amazing or the guy at the next table might have caught my pleased face because he asked what it was & was sad he didn't get it himself.
$95 (this includes our 3 drinks) and 3 hours later our 694 experience was done.
This is a very cool place but I wouldn't recommend taking a date here unless it's not just a date but a nice, established relationship. Best for groups of friends I would say because looking around the small dining area, I only saw one couple that was there. Everyone else was groups of friends consisting of 2-8 people. Because the food is so great here, I would definitely recommend it but be prepared for the tight & loud quarters. I will absolutely be back on a Tuesday for BLT Night and hoping I can give it that 5 star rating the amazing food here deserves.
A last huge plus, street parking at no cost! How often can you find that in Chicago!? - Sep 11, 2014
Visited on my touristy trip to Chicago and loved it. I passed by the area on accident and that's how I found this gem but it's one place I crave since then...
The atmosphere, the wine and the grilled cheese sandwiches... Yes please! However, everything in the menu looked amazing due to its selection and menu layout itself...
The staff was extremely friendly, helpful and playful. I loved this place and I'd recommend it in a heartbeat.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nov 8, 2007
For those of you who are always asking for the perfect date place look no further because I have found it...Juicy Wine Company. It's a dark, intimate atmosphere with an uh-mazing wine list....you really can't ask for more!
You're probably thinking that I had a romantic night here with my fiance, but I actually made plans to go here with one of my dear male friends who actually prefers men. Ironically enough I think I visit more romantic spots with him than I do with my very own fiance! But this place just oozes romance...I only wish I had known about it in my single days!
We asked our fabulous waiter, John, to recommend a bottle of sauvignon blanc and while the name is escaping me right now (my memory tends to lapse after an entire bottle of wine) he sure did an excellent job in choosing one. Juicy had become my new favorite place after just 1 sip of wine. And I became even more of a fan when our cheese plate arrived! My friend gave me the honor of picking the cheese plate from the menu and I explained to waiter John that I was a bit overwhelmed with all the incredible choices so he offered to just make up a plate for us of cheese that would go well with our wine (I LOVE this place).
And John did just as good of a job (if not even better) with the cheese selection as he did with the wine. There were 3 different kinds of cheeses (sorry, can't tell you what those were either ;)) and they were all SOOO good! My friend was making orgasmic sounds after his first bite!
So what are you waiting for? Grab your significant other or call up that girl who's digits you scored at the bar last weekend. And head to Juicy for some wine, cheese, and romance. You can thank me with a bottle of wine...& don't forget the cheese please!Helpful 19Thanks 0Love this 15Oh no 0 - Jul 20, 2009
So I'm walking up Milwaukee the other night and I hear music coming out of the windows above a storefront. I think that someone is playing some great tunes in their loft- but upon closer inspection- it turns out that this cool- two story building is the Juicy Wine Company.
With a retail shop on the first floor (wines, cheeses. meats) and a few cafe tables in the back, once you go up the stairs to the second floor- you enter a "So-Ho" like loft lounge space with hardwood floors and exposed brick walls. There was great music pumping out of the elevated DJ booth, a small bar in the corner with a master mixologist, and a few big plush booths throughout the space. Step through the door and you find yourself on a private outdoor deck surrounded by planters filled with herbs and flowers.
We were lucky enough to snag a table on the deck and ordered up a couple of craft beers off of a menu that given the name of this place, makes wine the king. While not hungry- Juicy wine also has a kitchen that serves up tasty nibbles and according to the chef- their Sunday brunch even includes "chicken and waffles".
Nothing better than sitting outside- listening to some great music and sharing a couple of beers with a friend who was waxing poetic about the stars in the sky on this particular night.
And another good thing? This stretch of Milwaukee is fairly low key-so there is always plenty of free street parking available!
Juicy WIne . . . .I'll definitely be back. The sassy artwork alone hanging on all the walls is enough to bring me back. But seal the deal with "Chicken and Waffles"? You had me at hello!Helpful 9Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0 - Jim P.Cleveland, OH14915243May 24, 2008
THE UP-SIDE: This place has some good atmosphere going on. The wine selection was so-so.
THE DOWN-SIDE: The service here was highly impersonal. Our server never took the time to make us feel welcome in any way. And, while I know that serving isn't always a joy - I have served and bartended - I do believe that it is just good business to welcome your customers with a "hello" and a smile. Even though we were at the Juicy Wine Company on a slow night, this never happened.
Perhaps, more bothersome was the snide little note from the owners on the menu. This note basically amounts to crying and moaning about the many folks that find their prices to be too high. It describes in a pretty condescending manner how the owners have decided to handle "those people."
Yes, in an effort to shame those that find their prices a tad outrageous into oblivion, the owners here offer a cheap "mystery wine." They make no guarantees as to its quality, and heavily imply that if you are stupid enough to find their prices too high, you deserve a cheap, awful, and shameful wine experience.
While there may be some merit to setting prices within a certain range, I have never seen such a childish and backward note attached to any menu in any restaurant - ever. It was as if the owners were looking for a fight. Why they would bother addressing this issue in such a manner is beyond me.
THE SUM-IT-UP: If you're looking for a decent wine experience in a place with some good atmosphere, check out the Juicy Wine Company. However, don't be surprised if attitude of the owners and the servers leave you with a bad taste in your mouth.Helpful 9Thanks 0Love this 6Oh no 0 - Philip D.Toronto, Canada231012Sep 3, 2016
What a novel idea! Had a glass of wine with 2 different cheeses, I'm hooked. Great little spot, has a outdoor patio that is massive. Personally I would like the seating to be a little more cozy (couches), but I think it goes with the vibe they are selling.
I don't think I will be buying cheeses in the future but just coming here.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Sep 1, 2009
Chocolate?
Wine??
Dear Juicy Wine Company... you know the secret to my heart. I ordered brownies and caramel direct from Hot Chocolate. Absolutely delicious. And to top it off, I sipped it with old friends in a corner booth before they officially opened. The server gladly tended to us even though we came in early.
Sweet, perfectly chilled Riesling.
Decadent caramels and chocolate brownie pieces.
A comfy, warm spot in the corner.
Great company and time to catch up with old friends.
I don't know what more I could ask for. I can't wait to come back.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - 105126349Apr 23, 2012Updated review
While I don't want to give away a secret, this is a great spot for a party.
The upstairs room is a great party space and the staff is really great to plan with. If you have enough people, the upstairs is perfectly open and great - places to sit, mingle and chat with everyone. The outside area can't be booked, but it's a lovely area and we were lucky enough to use it as the night was a bit cool and other patrons didn't want to come upstairs.
The bartender was really great - helpful and awesome at remembering names. The drink list is a bit pricey, but they do have lots of options, so there is something for everyone. Food-wise, the meat and cheese is a great option with some nice selections. The DJ was great and really helpful with those annoying requests from partiers.
Definitely a great spot for dinner, snacks, or a nice spot to have a cocktail. For parties, it's a nice, casual spot to get together.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Aug 10, 2011Previous reviewSo...I've passed by this place a zillion times and thought..."looks cute, but I've never seen anyone in there...".
I finally visited with some friends and really enjoyed it.
We went straight up to the roof which was adorable and perfect for the weather. The downstairs was really nice, too, with a little shop (seems convenient!). While the rooftop was small, it was quaint and enjoyable. Atmosphere was a 4 (I think on the weekends, this could get really loud with the dj in the next room....)
Ther service was excellent - we were quickly greeted and brought our bottle of prosecco. While the prosecco we ordered didn't seem to be on the menu, they accommodated by serving us a bottle (at a reasonable price). Service was a 5.
I only tried an appetizer, but what I thought was nice was that my friend is gluten free and they made up a special plate for us so that she could eat with us. It was not only delicious, but really helpful of them (and appreciated). We had a meat and cheese platter with some sort of delicious fruit gel. Food was a 5.
Value was pretty good. Things were typical for city pricing. I give value a 3 as it was relatively average.
The bathrooms were on the first floor and were nicely done and clean (4 for bathrooms).
I would visit again - it's a nice spot for wine in the neighborhood and has a cozy, friendly vibe. - Lainie P.Chicago, IL269269Aug 17, 2008
I've been a customer of Rodney Alex, owner of Juicy Wine Company, since he owned Taste in Wicker Park. I followed him over to Juicy Wine Company for the simple reason that Rodney knows what is good, and he knows how to make it even better.
Rodney has worked hard to develop relationships with not only his customers, but also his purveyors. He gets wines that other bars don't (and that retail shops can't), he gets cheeses and meats that are hard to find even at specialty shops. He also has knowledgeable staff who are very willing to educate customers about what they are eating. You can't put a price tag on any of these things.
Because a lot of their wines and edibles are small production, they may not have everything on their menu available when you visit. Instead of getting frustrated, ask your server for recommendation: This can be the best way to try new wines and cheeses!
Hint: While they have a set menu of wines available by the full and half glass, be sure to ask if they have anything else open that day for glass pours. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't, but you can end up finding some real gems by asking.
Some people complain about the prices at Juicy, and it can indeed get a bit spendy. If you want to keep costs down, go with a group of people and share some meat and cheese plates, along with a couple of panini, and get your wine by the bottle, not the glass. Alternatively, Juicy frequently has specials on Mondays ($5 Mojitos and Cuban Sandwiches) and Tuesday nights ($10 Obama Burgers and 1/2 price American wine by the bottle or glass) so get on their mailing list to learn about what is available.
Finally, do NOT miss their brunch. It is fantastic, and entrees range from $5-$8, with brunch cocktails at only $5 each. Best bagels around, awesome pastries from Mindy Segal at Hot Chocolate, and the "Whole Bunch of Pork" entree is fantastic: Artisan ham and bacon, served with a side of maple syrup.
Heaven.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0
