BIOMECHANICS at VANCOUVER ORTHOTICS

Biomechanics is the study of human motion. In relation to your feet, biomechanics can be measured with gait (walking) analysis which affects the motion of the foot and leg in stride and how that affects the kinetic chain of the human body.

Your arches are in essence your shock absorbers. They act as a spring to your step to help dissipate the forces of gravity to the muscles, joints, ligaments and tendons from above. When your arches are either too high (supination) or too low (pronation) the result is an accumulation of repetitive stress and tension. Over time this can lead to pain, dysfunction and inflammation locally or somewhere higher up in the body.

Symptoms are the alarm that something is wrong. Treating the symptom will often lead to the symptom returning. Treating the cause of that symptom is the way to find long lasting improvement and meaningful results in whatever is affecting you.

The conventional approach to treating aches and pains doesn’t always look at the source of the problem; it often just treats the symptom. The concept behind using custom orthotic insoles is based on support of the arches of the feet and in turn enhancing the mechanical efficiency of the human kinetic chain.

The Kinetic Chain – Why your back, hips, knees, lower legs, ankles and feet hurt! You are only as strong as your weakest link.

Our body is connected in more ways than most know. When there is a long standing orthopedic problem somewhere in your body, chances are the problem is connected in some way to another area of your body. If your ankles or knees hurt just from walking, there is a good chance that you may have some issues with your feet. Even if your feet are hurting, there may be an issue with your calves. Tight calves can lead to problems in your knees, hips and lower back. This in turn can cause problems in your upper back, shoulders, neck and even head. You see, everything is connected, a kinetic chain. When a part of this chain is weak or damaged, it will affect other parts of the chain. Those parts affect other parts and so on.
