The conductor was amazing! Funny, a singer & even a dancer. The SD ballet did a great job. I loved it all!

    disappointed

by Kathy on 1/3/24San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

The seats were great, the orchestra superb, the conductor energetic and entertaining. In the past, pre Covid, there were dancers in full costume doing the waltz across the whole stage! Their dancing and costumes were an integral part of the production, a part I missed this year.

DELIGHTFUL SHOW FROM START TO FINISH

by JoJo on 1/3/24San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

my hubby and i do not often run towards classical music as our first choice in entertainment, but "Salute to Vienna"captured our interest and we joined the show on New Year's Eve afternoon. we could not be happier that we "stretched"ourselves to attend this concert. every moment was delightful! Conductor Alastair Willis engaged the audience throughout the performance, bringing us into Vienna of the 19th and early 20th centuries, conducting our clapping during certain rousing pieces, and enchanting us throughout. the addition of the performers from the San Diego Ballet was a treat, as were Soprano Angelika Brandner and Tenor Martin Piskorski, whose vocal contributions were stunning. we hope to catch a future performance of the Strauss Symphony of America and continue to broaden our musical horizons!

    Not up to usual standard

by Pico1 on 1/3/24San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

We love Salute to Vienna and have gone about 10-15 times in past years. While we enjoyed it, it wasn't as good as in the past. The conductor was excellent, as were the two singers - but the local ballet company wasn't as good as the dancers that used to come from Europe - and we didn't enjoy the selection of music as much as before. We also missed the larger program that we used to get. It is still a wonderful experience, and we will go again next year in the hope that it is back to the standard we are used to.

    Beautiful performance

by Josephine Baldwin on 1/3/24San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

I have attended the Salute to Vienna New Year's Concert for several years now. The last time this wonderful concert was held in San Diego was just before the pandemic, in 2020. The conductor, Alastair Willis, was superb! This year, the performance was wonderful but shorter than previous New Year Concerts. I missed the dancers from the Opera of Vienna. And most of all, I think it is a pity that the concert was not performed at the Copley Symphony Hall, as in previous editions. All in all, I am grateful that it was held this year in San Diego.

    Awesome

by Local Fan on 1/3/24San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

This event is special since it combines symphony, opera and ballet. It is rare you can see all these genres in one place, at one time. The music is beautiful Viennese waltzes, the dance done by the SD Ballet company is moving (with beautiful costumes) and the guest soprano and tenor from Vienna this year had incredible voices. A beautiful production that you should see every New Year!

    performance great; ticket experience bad

by LOR on 1/7/23FirstOntario Concert Hall - Hamilton

First of all the performance was wonderful with the conductor, musicians, singers and dancers highly skilled and interacting easily with the audience. The ticketing process left much to be desired however with the use of a third party operating unknown to me until I got my credit card statement in US currency, thus significantly increasing the price I thought I was paying. The rating given above was for the performance only. The overall experience was more like a 2 or 3 star just because of the ticketing experience and the stress that caused beforehand.

    Two Hours of fantastic entertainment

by Libbett on 1/5/23FirstOntario Concert Hall - Hamilton

My husband and I had been to a Salute to Vienna years ago. This years concert was a birthday gift. We have never been to the First Ontario Concert Hall before So didn’t know what to expect. I was a fabulous experience to see this show there. The seating was excellent. Being able to see the performance from anywhere. The Canadian Vienna Orchestra were outstanding. The conductor, Alexander Van Der Bellen was charismatic, a pleasure to watch and listen to. Katarzina Donalska was absolutely wonderful. She is such a talented soprano singer with a gift to entertain also. Angelo Pollak was also wonderful to listen to. These two sang so well together. The dancing groups were so entertaining and beautiful to watch their routines to the music played. All in all I’d say this was one of the best concerts we’ve ever been to. We would certainly go again. An all round spectacular performance.
