Maisie Dunbar Spa Lounge: Q&A with the Owner

Making relaxation and pampering a necessity for all is her goal.

Located in the heart of downtown Silver Spring, Salon Owner Maisie Dunbar is an award-winning nail technichian. Some of her accolades include: Entrepreneur of the Year, Salon of the Year Winner, Day Time Emmy Awards and features in O Magazine, and the Washington Post.

Maisie Dunbar is multi-talented with her spa services ranging from manicures, pedicures to massages and her own line of make up, Bluffa Jo cosmetics. Her cosmetics line has been featured at the Grammy Awards, New York and Miami Fashion Week.

Dunbar said that she is committed to excellence and attributes her success to her upbringing in Liberia. It has had a significant impact on her ability to exceed the expectations of the industry. Her parents were strong overachievers and she carries their legacy in every aspect of her business.

In her interview with Patch, Dunbar explains her start in the industry and her journey to owning Maisie Dunbar Spa Lounge.

Patch: How did you get started in the beauty industry?

Maisie Dunbar: I got laid off my job after nine years in corporate America. Growing up I was always fascinated by beauty, but with being laid off and having such a competitive spirit I made it my career.

Patch: What is the most gratifying thing about owning your own spa?

Dunbar: I don't have to worry about going to work and somebody telling me,'You're no longer needed.' I'm in control of my own destiny.

Patch: On your website you write, "Your feet is your connection to Earth." What do you mean by that?

Dunbar: When you go back to the biblical days, washing someones feet is very ceremonial. There's no other way your body connects to the Earth than through your feet. It is very spiritual.

Patch: In this struggling economy, how important is it for people to treat themselves to wellness spas?

Dunbar: Hopefully, the economy will go up but I think that people need to allow themselves the balance. I don't think people should look at it as a treat, but more as a necessity. My place creates an experience and fulfills their needs.

Patch: What's next for you?

Dunbar: For my cosmetic brand, I have a show in San Juan, Peurto Rico in November. I want my spa to be the place to be in D.C. I want people to talk about the experience and the quality of the products. I also plan to go back to Africa for my cosmetic line.
