Q:
Would this class be good for someone whose primary camera is a cell phone? I'm interested in learning about lighting, framing, composition, etc, photography concepts that can be applied to any camera.

Thanks for your question! Our classes are appropriate for students with DSLR or mirrorless digital cameras. If you'd like to learn more about taking pictures with your phone, a private lesson with us would be ideal!

I am very thankful to have found JP and his 3 hour beginner photo class on Groupon. I just started getting into photography last year with my Nikon D5300. I mainly shot photos in automatic mode while attempting to study the other modes, via YouTube videos and reading blogs. My last straw was after I took a trip to Antelope Canyon (look it up....it's a photographer's playground) and did not get the pictures I wanted.
The beginning of the class was a little hectic since our class was over 20 people on a Saturday afternoon. JP and Jules helped set up everyone's cameras. I liked his teaching style, despite being the type of person who likes to memorize and take notes. Don't worry; he gives out a summary hand out at the end of the class. He had the class learn through a few exercises. We covered exposure compensation, aperture and shutter speed. The pace of the course was perfect and JP made sure everyone understood everything fully. I was amazed at how much I learned (and retained) in the 3 hours.
At the end of the class, he offers an in-person discount for all of his other classes. I would highly recommend checking out this class; definitely worth the value! Thanks JP!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Brooke S.New York, NY127382Aug 12, 2019
JP Teaches Photo is amazing. Literally one of the best purchases I have ever made. After the first class (which I purchased on GroupOn for $30), I immediately bought the 3 remaining (which you get at a discount - basically 3 classes for the price of 2 - $254). The 4 classes are as follows:
1) How to use my camera Part 1(you'll focus on exposure, aperture, and shutter speed)
2) How to use my camera Part 2 (you'll focus on flash, ISO, and white balance)
3) Lighting walk (you'll put together all 6 elements you learned in the 2 previous classes)
4) Night walk (you'll learn the ins and outs of the manual setting)
I took my first 2 classes with JP, and he was kind, patient, generous, and just very knowledgeable about all types of cameras, settings, etc. After each class, I truly felt like I understood more about my camera, and I wasn't afraid to go out and practice what I learned. I've taken some great photos since, and I'm really happy that I have this skill now. I cannot recommend JP Teaches Photo enough. There's also an internship program, and all previous interns are now employed as photographers. If that doesn't tell you how worth it this class is, then I don't know what will. Take it.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Chelsea W.Jersey City, NJ175122133Apr 19, 2018
So my husband got me class Part 1 on Groupon. It was a great deal. The address to the class is easy to get to. I learned so much from this class and to think it was only the first one is amazing. JP is a great teacher! He goes slow, he makes sure everyone is on the same page. His instructions and how he makes sense of things is on a level everyone can comprehend. I really loved that about this class! I have been using my camera a ton and using what I learned and have taken amazing photos. I bought the rest of the classes and will update again after part 2!

I took the photography class and an individual class with Lydia. She is fantastic. She is obviously a professional with loads of experience; however, she is able to explain and teach the basic contents of photography without a hint of judgement or frustration. I had virtually no experience with photography (besides utilizing my iPhone) however I am now able to understand how to change the settings to take the pictures I want to take. Highly recommend!

This class was just what I needed. While I had been given some great books, and done some research on the web, I wasn't really confident with my DSLR and had generally been winging it. JP's instruction did exactly what I needed. He helped train my eye to see exactly how the settings on my camera affected my photos. Being able to immediately apply the knowledge in class helped cement it into my aging brain.
I found JP engaging and patient, but never patronizing. There was a huge variety of people in the class and he made sure everyone got their questions answer. I've signed up for the next classes and can't wait!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Niki N.Jamaica, NY097Aug 7, 2016
The class was okay. Prior to purchasing the Groupon, I read some reviews. The majority of people are in awe with the class. I decided wht not try out the beginners class? I think Linda has a super cool spirit and is quite knowledgeable. Linda's friend, Brian was available to assist throughout the class time. However, he seemed disinterested at times.
The class began outside across the street from the place of business with maybe 30 students. We found out about exposure compensation. We, then, went into the "classroom" for the lecture/hands-on portion. Linda stressed no memorization or note taking, rather learn by doing. The class ended outside on Seventh Avenue trying out a technique.
I am interested in taking the night class when my schedule is more accommodating.
Here are some things that would be beneficial. All people do not learn the same. Allow people to make the judgement on whether to take notes or not. We are all adults. The room should be equipped with a Smart Board and an Elmo. This would give the ability for everyone to be able to see more clearly the images that were shown on the iPad in the room. Also, the instructors would benefit from having their own cameras available. Less talk more hands-on activities.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - May 19, 2013
As someone who wanted to jump into the world of photography, and just bought a brand new dslr, JP's class was exactly what I needed.
I took all three of his classes, the beginner's, advanced, and nighttime photography. The were all excellent. The beginner's was perfect to try and understand how the basic functions of a camera works. Advanced gave me a better understanding of my camera. And the nighttime/long exposure class was just a fun class that I learned so much from.
I highly recommend JP's class if you're new to photography.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - 520705758Mar 3, 2014
Fiance & I took his Intro Part 1 class yesterday. From the beginning exercise before the classroom instruction (non-snow days mean this portion is hosted in Central Park), the level of individual attention, practical examples to allow students to realize the theories deeply & the precise crisp yet humorous answers were very comforting about an otherwise stressful topic.
JP's individual care, precise and very effective teaching method (reinforcing the theoretical with an immediate individual exercise, reminders to feel not memorize, practical tips for actually using taught lessons immediately) & careful explanations refined over years of teaching make this photo class uniquely effective. I highly vouch for the shared enjoyment of photography as the spirit vs rote memorization, clarity, thoughtful presentation, practical outcomes & overall teaching effectiveness.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Cheetz C.New York, NY33189Sep 23, 2015
I've now taken 2 classes w/JP Photography and I've learned so much about my camera and better ways to use it that I feel like I can say I'm still a novice but really a bit more :-). I'm more comfortable with my camera and find myself taking photography to a higher level of interest and time pursuing this hobby. JP and Lydia are excellent teachers and create a very comfortable and fun environment to learn. I just signed up for my 3rd class.
