Feb 16, 2012 — A small Adirondack community has reclaimed its world record for the largest raft of canoes, kayaks and guideboats.
Last September, Inlet’s “One Square Mile of Hope” committee organized the flotilla on Fourth Lake as part of an event to raise money for breast cancer awareness.
Adele Burnett, Tourism Director for the Town of Inlet, helped organize the event. She says her group recently received official notification from Guiness World Records that they are back in the record book.
Burnett says the new record, 1,902 boats, eclipses the previous record of 1,619 boats held by “Paddle at the Point” in Pittsburgh.
"We did do it in 2008 and broke a record then, and after that event said we'd never do it again. It was just a lot of work, a lot of preparation; a year's worth of planning. But then Pittsburgh went and broke our record in 2010, so we decided we couldn't let that happen, you know, big city of Pittsburgh breaking our record, this little town of inlet, so we decided that we had to try it again, and we did it. We broke their record"
She says their new record almost doubled Inlet’s first record set on Fourth Lake in 2008.
Last September’s “One Square Mile of Hope” event also raised $80,000 for breast cancer awareness, research and treatment. Participants traveled from 17 states and two Canadian Provinces to lend their support.
