Beginner Surfing l is our popular two-day surf clinic that lasts 2.5 hours each day on two consecutive days. You are welcome to join us for just one day although we recommend that the beginner surfer with a true desire to learn how to surf take the full two days. This is a Teen/Adult class – for ages 13 and up. So what will you be learning? This clinic was designed with the beginner in mind – we welcome complete newbies as well as people who have tried surfing on their own for a while and still need help. We will walk you through all the basics to get you started and catching waves!

FAQ: Why are some of the class times in Santa Cruz SOOO early?! (like 7am?!)
Answer: When it comes to surfing, mother nature sets a lot of the rules – that’s what makes it such a unique sport. The wave in Santa Cruz is very tide-dependent, so if we don’t go on the right tide, we won’t get any waves! While those early morning sessions might be hard to wake up for, they are also truly magical. Great surf conditions, no wind, no crowds – it is about as epic as it gets. If you make the commitment go early, we can promise you’ll be rewarded with the experience of a lifetime!

Participants will begin with a land-lesson to learn about ocean awareness, wave breaks, ocean conditions, safety in and out of the water, wave etiquette, paddling, push up and pop up techniques, as well as riding waves and balancing. Then, students will move in to the water and start out in shallow areas riding the whitewater until they are comfortable with venturing further out. Our instructors are all CPR/First-Aid and lifeguard certified, and ready to teach you the basics of surfing. Participants can expect approximately 1.5-2 hours of water time in a 2.5 hour lesson – the start of the class does have some “setup” time built-in to get people suited up and down on to the beach, and the land lesson can take about 30 minutes. After surfing, we will get you out of the water in time to make it back to the parking lot by the “end time” of the class so that you have appropriate expectations of the class schedule.

We provide a safe and non-threatening environment for the beginning surfer – no angry localism here! Come have fun learning how to surf and explore the wonders of the ocean with our experienced guides. If you have ever thought about surfing and thought “no way”, think again! Lets catch some waves!

Dates Offered: Clinics offered year-round. For a complete list of dates, click one of the registration links below.

Minimum number needed for class: 2 people – While it is rare, if you are the only person registered in your group surf class, we will contact you in advance and offer you a free reschedule or the opportunity to pay for an upgrade to a private lesson.

Maximum class size: While the overall class size may vary, the ratio of student to instructor will never exceed 4:1.

Prerequisites: No surfing experience is required to take this class – it is appropriate for total beginners through “advanced beginners”, so it is also a great class to repeat several times and still ok to take if you have a little experience elsewhere.  SWIMMING: You must have basic swimming skills to take the class.  You do not need to be an “expert swimmer”, but you should have the ability to make it across the length of a swimming pool and tread water for 10-15 seconds un-assisted.
