1st time player
It was my first time playing this course. Course has great potential but it is in deep need of TLC. The green was tje most disappointing thing about my experience. They were bear of any grass and it had patches of weed grass. I stop playing the greens and just drove the ball.
Poorly maintained
Course has an interesting layout that could make for a decent playing venue. However, the greens are over 50% painted dirt with patches of grass here and there; the tee boxes are very uneven with patches of sparse grass or bare ground and so hard you can snap a tee trying to get it into the ground; fairways have a very low/short grass, hard was pavement, bare spots, erosion ruts, etc.; very little rough with lots of sparse weeds, bare spots, etc. with deep woods near fairway edges and little or no clearing of the floor of these woods, rarely does a wayward shot present a risk/reward opportunity, but rather a lost ball or behind a bush, log or buried in leaves ; carts are very old/raggedy; driving range mostly sand with a little grass growing in it.
Clubhouse is nice enough and staff/employees courteous, pleasant and helpful. Too bad management doesn't invest in improvements or even regular maintenance.
Had a great time. Course was in great shape
Only issues, they had port a pottys . Wife not happy with that!
Solid Value and Fun
Played in the middle of the day and for a Saturday, it was as if we were the only group on the course. The course style lends itself to that feeling of playing solo. Tee boxes were a little hard but the rest of the course was in excellent condition. Cart paths are a bit rough but nothing hazardous. The carts could use rain covers and the clubhouse is simple and small (my only real complaints and don't affect play at all). Overall a great place to play for the price. Will be a regular here for sure.
Great find
Great course for amateur golfer, especially beginner. While not super easy, the high handicap(gold) tees give you a relatively short course - a shade over 5,100 yards. Very nice setting, as well. Got a great price ($20 for 18 holes on a Saturday morning) when I made the tee time thru golf now.com.
You need coarse knowledge
Tough coarse for playing once
You need coarse knowledge as to lay up positions on most holes
Several blind shots
You want know if the group ahead is on the green or gone
Gps like Golf Lodgic a must to see layout
Cameron Hills
Very good value. Somewhat off the beaten track but definitely worth the trip. Staff is very friendly. Course is challenging. Greens are excellently maintained.
The course was in very good condition.
The course was in good condition. The greens were a little slow but they were all consistent. Some of the carts are old and the cart path is in bad condition. The may-flies are very bad so bring some repellant. At the end of the day, it's a good layout and the price was worth it ($25). I'll definitely play here again.
Great Value
Cameron Hills is one of those golf courses that keep the course in great shape and the price right. The staff is excellent and friendly.
Nice layout
Course is a good test of all your shots. There is one hole number 9 that is about impossible. Played on a hot afternoon but there is shade and the course is in good shape. Staff was very nice.
People were great, booking had everyone backed yp
We had a great time, just ALOT of people squeezed in around the same time. Everything else was perfect.
Always an enjoyable round.
I have played this course on numerous occasions over the tears. It is a great value for the money. I played as a single on Saturday April 23rd in the afternoon. Greens were of average speed but in very good condition as usual. Bermuda fairways should green up in the next 2 to 3 weeks. Pace of play was average for a Saturday. Two groups allowed me to play through. I reached a threesome on 14.( 2 males and a female). I did not mind that they did not let me through. What they did do however did. It rained throughout the round and the course was wet. On16 they proceeded to drive their golf carts onto the apron of the green. 17 fairway is cart path only. The fairway is protected by ropes and railroad ties to prevent riding on the fairway. They each bounced their carts over the railroad ties to ride up the fairway. The staff at Cameron hills does an excellent job maintaining their course. A little respect from all golfers will go a long way to keep this course at its current great conditions. I had a great round and will surely be back. Thank you.
Very good local course.
Good layout and conditioning. Friendly downhome course through the rolling woodlands of the Northern Neck. Rural setting but less than an hour from Fredericksburg and Richmond. Just a nice place to enjoy a round of golf and not a hyped up destination course.
Great, even off season
Off season round, fairways dormant. Nice bent grass greens, some narrow fairways and dramatic elevation changes. Useful tip sheet available from the pro shop. I bet this is is awesome in season.
Good Bones
This course has a good layout that I have enjoyed playing several times over the years. The holes are moderately difficult without being abusive.
The condition was poor, but that is to be expected in February. I have played in the summer and it is usually in good condition.
Sad
Pace of play was a snail. I was a single and no one would let me play through. The cart paths are full of holes and in need of great repair. The greens were good. This course is a convenient course. Would not play here if there were another course in the county. So much potential but no one will invest in it.
Dont play in the rain
Too many leafs on the greens couldnt really putt
The cart paths are very very dangerous in some spots almost lost control of the cart about five times
Fairways were ok some broadleaf weeds
Ok for a beginner to intermedate
Terrible
The course was clearly not taken care of because there is little grass all over. The tee boxes are all uneven. You can tell that there is no maintenance done to the course and the golf carts are in hedious shape. If they took care of the course it could be a great golf course.
How about slow.
This is a nice course, needs some money spent to upgrade some things. I play here often but yesterday was a bit out of the norm. There were two 4 somes ahead of me and they turned a 3 hour round on golf into almost 4.5 hours. I had plenty of time to repair the marks they left on the greens. Most of the time faster players are allowed thru but I have no idea what the problem was yesterday.
Course with some character
We were the second group off the tee at 8:30 on a chilly Friday morning. Playing as a twosome. Had the course to ourselves all morning. Tees and fairways are in fair shape. Not the best, but sufficient. Greens were in really good shape. The overall condition of the course was great for the price!
This was my first trip to Cameron Hills and I really enjoyed the course. It was nice having multiple tees to play from as I was bringing along a beginner who was able to play from the Gold tees and had a great time while I played from the Blues.
I liked the layout through the woods. It is away from busy roads and neighborhoods which is a nice change of pace. Wouldn't be as fun if you don't have full control of all of your shots. Most fairways are only 30-40 yards wide with woods on both sides. On the longer holes the Tee shots come through a shoot before widening out to the fairway. Many holes have a narrowing approach to the green. There are quite a few elevation changes throughout the course. Not many bunkers or water hazards.
For the price this is a great course. I wish it was a little closer to home for me. Took us about 1 hour and 20 mins to get here from Richmond. I would play here regularly for the price. Very friendly staff. Carts and cart paths could use some upgrades but that doesn't bother me.
Can't beat a good price, nice people and a course with some character. I will be back.
