The Best of the Best I love San Joaquin, there’s no question about IT. I love our area so much, in fact, that I decided to start this magazine almost seven years ago to spotlight the Central Valley and all the people doing great things here. Even after all these years, I’m still impressed by everyone working to make San Joaquin a better place—opening new restaurants and businesses, working in agriculture to grow tastier fruits and veggies, and contributing to the schools and youth programs to make for a better future.    With all that said, the “Best of San Joaquin” is my favorite issue of the year, when we give you—our readers— the chance to vote and tell us who and what should be featured in our magazine, anything from your favorite burgers to where to take out-of-town guests. We also invite our trusty editors to share some of their favorite San Joaquin secrets in this issue, hidden gems that they’ve discovered visiting restaurants and events, meeting all of you, and writing about the Central Valley.    Turn to our “Best of San Joaquin 2010” on page 60 and see if your favorite spots in San Joaquin made the cut. You’ll find some old favorites that you haven’t been to in quite some time, and some new spots that you’ve just got to try out. I know I’m going to be checking out the rum cake at Breadfruit Tree restaurant, picking up some treats at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory in Manteca, and heading to the Stockton Ports game on a fireworks night. Not too bad.    Whatever you do with your summer, regardless of whether it’s from our list of San Joaquin’s ‘best’, be sure to enjoy yourself and make the most of the Central Valley. The devotion with which Bob and Diana Whitaker support sustainable agriculture makes it hard to believe they weren’t born into the farming business; especially Bob, who spent the majority of his childhood in bustling Los Angeles. Both were in some way exposed to gardening as kids, and now attribute their love of growing vegetables to those childhood experiences. 

Bob’s grandfather in Washington kept large gardens, and would help plant a veggie plot each winter during his visit to L.A. Diana’s father grew most of the family’s vegetables in their garden in Lodi. Now, years later, the two own Fresh Edibles Farm in Stockton, a Community Supported Agriculture system (CSA) that allows community members to buy a share of the harvest, and have fresh vegetables delivered to their door.    For some, buying veggies fresh from the farm is a commitment that takes getting used to, and Diana says it’s sometimes difficult to forego the convenience of grocery stores. “My generation is so used to buying anything they want, whenever they want. It’s hard to convince them that they’re missing out. People tend to put convenience over health and taste.”    Fresh Edibles Farm doesn’t use pesticides or chemicals, so the crops are at the mercy of Mother Nature. There have been some setbacks during their three years of business, but the Whitakers know it’s a small price to pay for the high-quality food they grow. “Before, as a commercial farmer, I grew for money,” says Diana. “All you’re supposed to care about is quantity and how much you can get per acre. This is much more individualistic. I know who uses my product, and I have a responsibility to grow quality.” Diana favors Fresh Edibles’ tomatoes and especially their fresh corn, which she says is so sweet, you can eat it right off the stalk.    Fresh Edibles Farm is currently harvesting vegetables for about 140 shareholders, but their goal is to service 325 families and fully utilize

their ten acres of farm land. After reaching that goal, they hope to hire interns who want to learn the skills to begin their own CSA’s. The couple hopes to one day make their farm fully sustainable—and wouldn’t mind turning a little profit while they’re at it—but their main objective is to educate the community about agriculture and inspire them to buy locally.    Currently, Bob helps teach a horticulture class at Jane Frederick Continuation High School in Stockton, where he’s working with teacher Marvin Muela to develop a pilot agricultural program for all of San Joaquin County. As part of the program, kids would start a community farm and learn marketing, math, and various life skills through their work. After harvesting the produce, students would sell a small portion, and donate the rest to a charitable organization. Bob hopes to build students’ self esteem through their contributions to society. Giving kids the opportunity to have a hands-on experience may inspire them as adults to care about where their food comes from, just as it did for Diana and Bob.    In the meantime, the Whitakers continue to run their farm almost completely on their own, and are enjoying every minute of it. “It’s changed our lives a lot because it’s hard work,” says Diana. “But it’s really satisfying. Many of NASCAR’s biggest drivers like Jeff Gordon and Danica Patrick began their love of racing through go-karting. You may not be a fan of NASCAR, but if you’ve ever felt the need for speed, visit Stockton’s Motorplex Park on the County Fairgrounds. Here, owner Chris Ranuio and his helpful staff offer rentals in ten or thirty minute intervals for those who want to test out the exhilarating experience. They also maintain an outdoor track that’s open year-round.    “Normally, before people start racing professionally, they come out and practice,” says Carol Brown. “For their first three races, they run with an X on the back of their carts so people know they’re a new driver. After three races, they pull the X off and they’re good to go.” Brown is a promoter and racer at the Stockton Motorplex, and even though there’s a competitive spirit in the fast-paced environment, she describes camaraderie on the track, and encourages people of all ages to try it out. “To be honest, you can just show up and we’ll teach you. If you’re a new guy, people are friendly enough to say ‘Oh you’re a new guy? Well here, let me help you out.’”    To join one of the races the Motorplex holds throughout the year, you must be at least 16 years old and own your own kart, but to drive around the track the minimum age is only 5 years, which makes it a great family activity. If you want to become a racer, Brown suggests the Clone Class go-kart, which ranges between $500 and $750. From his recently-opened, new two-story shop in Tracy, 12 Monkeys Tattoos owner and artist Jon Highland gives San Joaquin magazine a little insight into the tattooing industry, how he learned the craft, and his advice for those looking to get inked. —Katy Berry

SJM: Do you recommend this method for other wannabe tattoo artists? JH: I am a ‘do as I say, not as I do’ type of situation. I would NOT do it the way I did. It was a very long learning curve, and I’m still learning. If I had known then that I wanted to be tattoo artist, I would’ve gone from high school into art school and done it that way. Then I would have gotten an apprenticeship. Finding one is hard, but that’s part of it. It takes years.

SJM: What do you think of tattoo reality shows? JH: The previews I’ve seen are embarrassing. Here’s a good analogy: If you were a legit bounty hunter and people said, ‘Aren’t you like Dog the Bounty Hunter?’, wouldn’t you want to distance yourself as far as possible? SJM: What’s your favorite type of tattoo? JH: The ones that I can start and finish in one sitting. I want that instant gratification of being able to see my finished product. I love doing black and grey, but I try not to pigeonhole myself into one style. I don’t want be known as the guy who does portraits or the guy who does color. People start asking you to only do that, and I get bored easily. SJM: What kind of advice do you have for those who want a tattoo? JH: You need to be a smart consumer. California doesn’t regulate tattooing. You need to do research. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Every year we take eight hour-long courses to get our blood born pathogen and first aid certificates. And yet, not one client ever asks, do you guys have your blood born pathogens certificate? You think everybody would. It’s like buying a car and not asking what kind of warranty it has, or if it’s safe. You also need to find the artist whose work you like. If there’s an artist that you think is great, then go there. It’s your skin, it’s there forever, be smart.

SJM: How did you learn to tattoo? JH: I used to draw ideas for friends and they’d go to a shop and get it done. Everyone said, ‘Just do them yourself.’ I didn’t have any desire to at all, but I kind of got badgered into it. I got this super cheesy beginners tattoo kit. I literally had my girlfriend laying on the coffee table and my other friend reading a book saying, ‘This is how you do it.’ I didn’t know anything. I was so nervous, I can’t believe anybody let me do it. But I got through it, and from there it snowballed so fast that I couldn’t even keep in front of it. Within weeks of my first tattoo, I was getting paid. I did it out of my apartment while having a full-time job. I’d come home from work and there’d be 10 people on my balcony waiting. It got so overwhelming that I had to go work at a shop. I had no choice.

I plan to paint some rooms in my home this summer. How can I measure properly so I don’t buy too much? What do I do with the leftovers?

Just Breathe. Oxygen is very critical to our well being, and any effort to increase the supply of oxygen to the body and especially to the brain will pay rich dividends. So many people walk into my office and their breathing is noticeably shallow and their diaphragms are often tight. When deciding where to take our granddaughters, ages 8 and 14, for spring break this year, we opted for Santa Cruz hands-down. The kids love visiting the Boardwalk, with all its

rides, games, and activities, as well as running around on the wide, wellmaintained, and often uncrowded beaches. Although Half Moon Bay may be a tad closer beach city, Santa Cruz, just a few miles further south, quite often offers warmer weather and provides more diverse childoriented entertainment, perfect for a host of new family memories.

What to see and do: A trip to the famous Santa Cruz Boardwalk (www.beachboardwalk.com) with young kids may challenge your comfort zone (the boardwalk can get fairly busy), but we found an infinite number of ways to enjoy the outing. This historic attraction remains the main draw in Santa Cruz, and admission is free, with a few different choices as to how to purchase tickets for the myriad of activities, games, and rides. Playing laser tag in the darkness, trying miniature golf indoors with glow-in-the-dark holes, pushing each other around in twirling bumper cars, or boarding some of the rides, especially the water-soaking Logger’s Revenge, were just part of our fun-filled experience. During the summer, the Boardwalk also hosts outdoor events like their free summer concerts featuring famous rock groups of the past. 

Daily beach walks and strolls on the Santa Cruz Wharf to see the resident sea lions are a more peaceful way to pass the time. A visit to the Seymour Marine Discovery Center (seymourcenter.ucsc.edu), where the world’s largest skeleton of an 87-foot Blue Whale is displayed, provides intimate aquarium exhibits, a touch tank, and free tours with admission. Based on recommendations of other grandparents, we took the granddaughters to the popular Mystery Spot (www.mysteryspot. com), where everything seems cockeyed and nobody’s quite sure whether it’s scientific phenomena or optical illusion. It really doesn’t matter because both kids and adults seem enthralled by this out-of-kilter, low admission wonder. Taking an easy bike ride, sans auto traffic, along the 4-mile, bayside paved bike trail is another great activity. If you don’t bring your own bikes, renting them at nearby Electric Sierra Cycles (www.electricrecbikes.com) is reasonable and the bike quality is first-rate. And yes, non-electric bikes are available as well.    While on the trail, pause to see surfers riding the waves next to the rugged cliffs right below you. Brief stops at the small but enlightening Santa Cruz Surfing Museum at Lighthouse Point (www. santacruzsurfingmuseum.org) and also at the picturesque Natural Bridges State Beach (www.parks. ca.gov) are recommended. Looking for a unique, fun way to tour the area? Try Cruz Carz (www.cruzcarz.com), a funky little yellow two-seater, threewheel, open-aired scooter with pre-recorded GPS guided tours. Are your kids into trains? If so, visit nearby Felton’s Roaring Camp (www.roaringcamp.com) for an hour-long timewarp ride on an 1890’s narrow gauge, authentically preserved steam train. Traveling through towering redwoods to Black Mountain’s summit is an experience not to be missed. If you’re only coming for a day visit to Santa Cruz, you might want to park your car at Roaring Camp and take their other roundtrip train route, operating since 1875, through San Lorenzo River Gorge right to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. Where to stay and dine: Our favorite hotel in Santa Cruz for

years has been the landmark Dream Inn (www.dreaminnsantacruz. com), directly on the beach and located next to the Boardwalk and Santa Cruz Wharf. No other local lodging can match its location. Under the guidance of the highly regarded Joie d’ Vivre hotel group, it has recently undergone a stylish multimillion dollar renovation that knocked our socks off. And guess what? Our granddaughters actually enjoyed the hotel’s pool area and spa (pictured) as much—if not more—than almost any other activity on the trip.

Dream Inn’s Aquarius restaurant provides family-friendly menus that are still upscale enough for discerning foodies. Our breakfasts and the staff were especially memorable. Another good choice for accommodations is the historic Casablanca Inn (www.casablancasantacruz.com) across the street from the popular volleyball beach area. Although not as kid-friendly as the Dream Inn, it remains a great choice for couple’s getaways. Our dinner at Casablanca restaurant was an excellent upscale culinary experience at moderate prices, and the kids menu was met with ‘two thumbs up’. Another recommended dining choice is the Ideal Bar and Grill (www.idealbarandgrill.com), a waterfront hangout for sports TV, outdoor seating overlooking the beach, and value dining and drink specials. This eatery can get fairly busy during peak beach season, but is plenty big enough both indoors and out to still be enjoyable any time. An abundance of good dining choices can also be found in the vibrant downtown and at the picturesque harbor or wharf. One of our favorite places away from the busy Boardwalk and beachfront is The Crepe Place (www.thecrepeplace.com), which offers weekend brunch, fresh salads and soups, savory and sweet crepes all day long, a huge outdoor patio, and hosts live music much of the year. Whether you want to spend a day or even a week in Santa Cruz, with or without children, this beach town has a lot more to offer than we ever realized. In our San Joaquin area, so rich in agriculture and wine, why wouldn’t we ‘eat local’? We’re lucky enough to have some of the best produce in the nation right here in our own backyard, after all. Michael Warren, owner of Lodi’s new Crush Kitchen and Bar, is embracing this idea, and using the bounty of the Central Valley as the centerpiece for all his dishes at the restaurant. “It’s all about simple ingredients, and layering those ingredients so that each one speaks for itself,” says Warren. “Food just tastes different when it comes from only ten miles away.” Warren has made the choice to support local growers and farmers, and has even found a way to put his own mark on local agriculture. Along with partner Michael Thomas, Warren’s own fiveacre orchard and garden supply almost 80 percent of the fresh produce for Crush’s menu. Cocktails also come from a local palate, with all juices freshsqueezed by hand. “It really is our vision to showcase the local agriculture. We are constantly changing the menu, at least every month, adding something new and taking something off that’s out of season.”

Since meeting her husband, Kirk Khasigian, at a wine country event—a “wine romance,” she likes to call it—the couple has also made use of Khasigian’s developer background to venture into their own ‘green’ building company. California Green Strategies is now responsible for the new ‘green’ DMV building in Stockton, one of our first environmentally-friendly buildings in the area. All this, and she’s expecting her first child at the end of the summer. Yes, we’re officially impressed.

The Langes are a fifth-generation, Lodi-based farm family that have gone above and beyond to create a sustainable vineyard, generating 88 to 92 percent of its own energy. Randall and Bradford Lange started the business in 1974 with the intention to be environmentally responsible, and Bradford’s daughter, Kendra, says the decision was, “because of who they are. Not because it was something that had been talked about.” Photovoltaic solar systems, low volume drip irrigation, and compost fertilizer are just a few methods used by the Langes to keep their winery eco-friendly, proving that being ‘green’ may not easy, but it sure makes some great vino.

Right in the heart of the downtown waterfront is the Hotel Stockton, built at the start of the 1900’s and recently renovated for use once again. “I believe I was eight when I attempted my first haircut. My poor Barbie never saw it coming. Even then I knew this is what I needed to be doing.” Deciding that she should master her craft, Jillian Brizendine left her little hometown of Lodi and moved to Santa Monica, California to attend The Vidal Sassoon Academy. Shortly after finishing her schooling she moved to San Diego to assist and continue her education at Jet Rhys. This salon is owned by two former Vidal Sassoon educators and often featured in Allure and ELLE magazines. There, she trained under Rhys and specialized in haircutting. “He is such an amazing teacher and stylist. Jet Rhys made me so passionate and they helped me develop the skills to make my haircuts flawless.” After moving a bit closer to home, Jillian became the lead haircutting instructor for the James Mark Salon in Elk Grove. She also began taking many coloring classes including the Master Colorist Program at The Wella Studio in San Francisco. She eagerly continues taking classes, stating, “In this profession you can never learn enough. This business is so competitive, stylists need to work twice as hard to keep up on the latest styles and techniques.” Finally, we have her back here in her hometown. Open just a few short months, the buzz has been so loud for Stockton restaurant and lounge Ave on the Mile, we simply couldn’t wait any longer to get the scoop. Luckily, owner Kevin Hernandez felt the same way. »

Located on Pacific Avenue, the opening of Ave is a welcome addition to the revitalization of the Miracle Mile, marked at its start by Stockton landmark University of the Pacific. For Hernandez, Ave is the culmination of years of travel to restaurants, clubs, and lounges in locations like Chicago, New York, Miami, and Las Vegas, drawing elements from each that he felt would work in Stockton. “I always thought, I would love to do something like this for Stockton. What would be a good fit?” After a childhood spent living only blocks from where the restaurant sits today, and a college education from Pacific, Hernandez knew the Miracle Mile was the spot.    “I always knew in the back of my mind,” he says. “I was raised on Sonoma Street, right off the Mile. Our generation and the kids coming to the Mile today don’t know what it was all about back then, how bustling and classy it was.”    So far, Ave has been just that: bustling and classy. Since the restaurant’s opening, the dining room and patio have been filled every evening with diners enjoying the new flavors and energy in Stockton. The menu caters to the recent trend of tapas-style dining, or small plates, and the flavors are inspired and unique. We love the ahi sashimi with ponzu oil, sesame seeds, and wontons. Another standout is the crostini plate of choose-your-own-topping baguette toasts—we chose the goat cheese with fig compote and honey; green apple with bacon and blue cheese; and bay shrimp with avocado and tomato. Be sure to also try Ave’s twist on a classic: capers added to a tomato, pesto, and mozzarella caprese salad. Dessert standouts include rum flambéed bananas served à la mode, and a rich chocolate brandy torte with berry and marshmallow garnishes.    Hernandez is quick to give the credit to his culinary staff, led by Executive Chef Nathan Kutch. “The whole kitchen as a team are young, vibrant, culinary creators,” he says. “I gave them the initial

idea, and they’ve not only run with it, they’ve sprinted.”    Hernandez’s managerial team also deserves recognition for Ave’s success. “The three of us each bring our own talents to the table. Kurstie Sur has the accounting know-how, Jason Laurenti has the corporate restaurant and engineering background, and I’m the people person, all about the marketing and the ambiance. Jason drew up the interior of the restaurant, engineered where everything should go, and I literally took the colored pencils and started playing with color and design.”   The result is a chic space filled with natural hues: black leather couches, smooth mahogany wood and stone, white flowing curtains, and a cracked glass-top bar. Seating comes in the form of both indoor and outdoor bistro-style tables, bar stools, and couch seating. On the weekends, as the dining crowd is winding down, Ave transforms into an ultra lounge with New York loft-style music, anything from Sinatra to Beyonce, and optional bottle service, the perfect venue for celebrating a special occasion or hitting the town.    Hernandez is already taking Ave past the conventions of a typical eatery, hosting red carpet events and pairing up with local businesses. At Ave’s first major event, celebrating the release of the Sex and the City 2 movie, Hernandez invited friend Angela McShane to host a jewelry trunk show. The evening of our interview with Hernandez, he’s hosting an event for neighboring Bikram Yoga Stockton to celebrate their devoted yogis.    “Everyone in the community should take the credit for Ave, for their overwhelming support. New Pacific President Pamela Eibeck has said, ‘This is our home, this is our little mile.’ The business owners on the Mile have all come and shaken our hands. I’ve received a lot of thank yous, for believing in Stockton, for choosing this location. We’re all here to support each other.”

A Classic Grape: Syrah This month’s picks from the Lodi Wine and Visitor Center by Michael Perry

Syrah (sometimes also called Shiraz) is a red grape variety that may not have the same name recognition as Cabernet Sauvignon, but is a noble grape variety with a long history of great wines. Originated in the Northern Rhone Valley of Southeastern France, it produces powerfully flavored, fullbodied red wines. Syrah aromas and flavors cover a full spectrum, including dark berry fruit, earth, spice, smoky oak, black pepper, bacon, espresso, and black pepper. The wine is medium to full-bodied and has moderate to strong tannins. Syrah is a great food wine: red meats grilled or barbecued, spicy pizzas, herbed sauces on red meat and pasta, and smoked turkey are just a few of the pairing possibilities. The next time you’re in Lodi to wine taste, try these Syrahs, and enjoy!

Dancing Fox 2007 “Dustin’s Serenade” Syrah The Dancing Fox Winery & Bakery is one of downtown Lodi’s’ newest winemakers. Be sure to try the bakery during your visit, you will not be disappointed. The Dancing Fox Syrah is dark purple with subtle aromas and flavors of cherry cola, cocoa, and spice with nice floral notes. The wine has moderate tannins and a lingering tart cherry and spice finish. ($23) www.dancingfoxwinery.com

Klinker Brick 2008 “Farrah” Syrah Klinker Brick, well known for its Zinfandel, also produces a highly sought after Syrah. A pretty, garnet red color, the 2008 is very young in the bottle. The wine is drinkable now but will benefit from additional aging. We also recommend decanting this wine prior to drinking to enhance the aroma. The wine’s flavors and aromas of cherry, dark berry, dusty oak, bacon, and black pepper combine with medium body, soft tannin, and a spicy, lingering finish to create a Lodi wine favorite. Michael-David 2007 “6th Sense” Syrah From one of the most well-known Lodi wineries comes this wonderfully complex Syrah. Mint, bacon, cherry, cranberry, and oak highlight the aromas and flavors. TOMATOES by KATY BERRY

It’s summer, and that means it’s finally time to stock your fruit bowl (yup, tomatoes are a fruit!) with shiny, red, deliciously ripe California tomatoes. The season begins in June and lasts till November, and California processes over ten million tons of tomatoes every year, accounting for nearly half of the world’s total production. In fact, the California Tomato Growers Association is located right here in Stockton. Tomatoes are full of vitamins and minerals, and especially Lycopene, which may help prevent cancer and heart disease. There are hundreds of varietals, the most popular being Plum tomatoes, which are great for canning and making into sauces; Beefsteak, the big red ones, are perfect for slicing and putting on sandwiches; and the small round cherry tomatoes are just the thing for salads and snacking. Gardeners and tomato lovers alike have also taken part in the growing heirloom tomato trend. Heirloom tomatoes are open-pollinated, which means they are grown naturally and not bred in large farms. Their seeds are said to be passed down from pre-industrial America, and there are over 600 types. Some of the most popular include the pink hued Brandywine, the lime striped Green Zebra, the dark Cherokee Purple, and the yellow and pink swirled Big Rainbow. Each has its own rich flavor, and they make a beautiful dish when mixed together. Try combining a few different types with olive oil, fresh mozzarella, and a touch of crunchy sea salt for a simple, summery dish that is both colorful and scrumptious.

3 cups frozen mixed vegetables, with mushrooms 5 slices Italian bread (1 oz. slices; each about 1-inch thick and 5-inches long) 1 Tbsp. olive oil ½ cup prepared pizza sauce 1 cup tomato, finely chopped ½ cup onion, very finely diced 1 Tbsp. dried oregano leaves 1 tsp. garlic powder 2½ Tbsp. grated Parmesan cheese Pre-heat oven to 350º F and place oven rack in middle-high position. Microwave frozen vegetables, then pat dry. Brush all bread slices lightly with oil and spread each with about 1½ Tablespoons sauce. Combine all vegetables in a medium-sized bowl. Carefully spoon vegetable mixture equally onto bread slices. Sprinkle with oregano and garlic powder and then with cheese. Bake about 5-7 minutes, until bread is brown on the edges and all vegetables are piping hot. Serve immediately. Serves 5.

mixed salad greens medium ripe tomatoes, cut into ¾-inch cubes green onions, chopped small cucumber, partially peeled and cut into ¾-inch cubes lemon juice, divided garlic powder coarsely ground black pepper salt large ripe California avocado, peeled

Thoroughly mix bite-sized salad greens, tomatoes, onions, and cucumber in a large serving bowl. Toss with 2 Tablespoons lemon juice, garlic powder, black pepper, and salt. Peel and cut avocado in half. Remove pit and slice into thin wedges, about 1/8-inch thick. Arrange slices on top of salad like a starburst. Brush remaining lemon juice and serve immediately. Serves 6.

First impressions can be deceiving, as is the case with Strings Café. The modest location (nestled in the Wal-Mart shopping center) doesn’t do its flawless reputation justice. You have to stop in, if only to taste the soft Parmesan bread and the salad, which is really quite memorable— crisp lettuce sprinkled with savory croutons, sunflower seeds, raisins, and a dressing that pulls the whole dish together. Thinking about stopping after the salad? Not a chance. Try the lasagna, which is superb, or any of the seafood dishes, all of which are surprisingly fresh and flavorful.

This downtown restaurant, open since 1975, is a classic eatery where the food is as eclectic as the diners.
