Atmosphere was just like a Sam's Club warehouse only with better, cooler stuff. Wide open spaces, whole room just for grain where you can make your own bags of different grains.

Quality of the temperature controller that I bought so far is very good.

Service was good, I was able to grab someone and get right to what I wanted to buy that day after roaming around without any problems. The person that helped me also talked to me on the way out.

Great selection compared to anything else not in giant warehouse form.

Once you get to realize where everything is and the large selection of wine stuff the whole place doesn't seem as big, but it has lots of great beer books based on style and all of the basic books like "The Joy of Home Brewing."

Online prices looked good. Shipping was a little high but I could live with that. However it took over a week for them to ship my order! And worst of all no communication that shipping was going to be delayed. If they had send me an email saying "bummer but one of you items is back ordered but its due in soon we should be able to ship on XXX date" I would have been OK.

But to just go dark? Just a bad attitude. There are plenty of other places with pricing in the same range but with excellent shipping and customer communication ethics.

BUYER BEWARE! - You Have been warned.

Long shipping times... some of my orders have taken up to a week to ship!

Deceptively low prices... The prices seem low, until you factor in the HUGE shipping costs! They claim they do not price gouge on shipping... but that is kind of hard to believe when you ship a paper thin stick-on liquid thermometer Priority Mail for $8! Really? I could ship this for $5 priority mail with tracking. So it begs the question, why can't they?

As far as selection is concerned: They advertise "complete kits", when they are anything but. Kits are missing essential items, like spoons, brushes and more.

Here are my last three order experiences. Starting in December of 2012 on through March 2013.

Order #1> An Item arrived broken, took a MONTH to get a replacement.
Order #2> A keg I ordered was rinsed and packaged while it was still wet and full of water. (other items in the package were soaking wet from the keg) - Buckets were dirty on the outside, dusty and had mystery black stains on the INSIDE of them that could not be removed. I also ordered a cheese kit that arrived incomplete, it was missing a mold, upon checking the invoice I found a hardly legible "backordered" scrawled onto the paper near the missing item. I was never notified that the item was on backorder also my account did not reflect this information, nor was I ever notified of when to expect shipment. Further, I was never notified when it did ship. Only after contacting the company myself did I get any answers at all.
Order #3> Ordered an Irish Red Malt Extract kit. Upon opening, I found that the kit included instructions for Copper Ale All-Grain kit.

Finally, I emailed the company giving my grievances and dissatisfaction with my past orders and to this day I have not heard a single word from them regarding the problems they seem to be plagued with.

Bottom line: There are better places to shop online for your beer or wine supplies try Northern Brewer as an alternative and around the same prices (once you factor in the inflated shipping costs Midwest tacks on) for example I paid less for an exact order from Northern Brewer because shipping there is fair. So my final review of Midwest Supplies is a resounding thumbs DOWN.

UPDATE: 5/24/13 - New Order (Yeah I know)

I decided to give Midwest one more try. You guessed it.. they screwed this order up too. My order was missing items I ordered. Having to contact them AGAIN to make it right. I am done with Midwest. Oh, and it took them 5 days to ship a simple order. No excuse for this sorry company.

I have purchased brew kits a handful of times here, with no issues, but in December purchased my entire 4-tap kegerator set-up here (over $650), and am very disappointed with the quality. Two gas regulator gauges had their backs broken, and two of my four taps had leaks in them from day one, even after tightening. The last straw was one of the employees commenting, "wait, you had two separate broken gauges, and NOW your taps are having trouble?", as if I was somehow damaging my own equipment on purpose. Make sure to ask about their money back guarantee, because it is fuzzy at best, and make sure to ask questions up front before ordering your parts-you know, simple questions like, "Do you include instructions?" (they don't). I finally gave up and purchased some beautiful taps from http://ritebrew.com, for half the price of midwest. If something as straightforward (and easily detected) as a broken gauge face is shipped out, what is the quality/origin of their grains, malt, and yeast (which are much more difficult to rate at first glance)?

Ok so here it is, this place cant even get 1 order right out of 3 in a row, then when you explain what is missing they want to send it without expediting it unless you ask for them to do so, all the while your ingredient's are getting old while you wait.

On one of the items that they were suppose to send a second time, it never showed up again, so now its being shipped a third time, and my brewing ingredients are still sitting in the fridge waiting, this has been going on for 3 weeks now, and no offer what so ever to do anything about my brewing supplies getting old, (and yes I had them crack the grains), even after speaking to a manager (nothing done), they will not be getting any more of my money.

On the bright side they are nice on the phone when you are spending your money with them, Midworst Supplies says it all.
Their shipping is outrageous compared to most.

If you don't believe me, just place an order and wait & wait.

Customer service FAIL.
I Ordered online, four yeast packages, and four ice packs.
They arrived at my door seven days later- not just warm, but hot. The yeast packs were totally swollen.
I was told by a customer service representative that the yeast was fine, and to use it anyway. My experience tells me otherwise. Northern Brewer would've replaced it.
Too bad, too.
Because Midwest offers up a great inventory, and modest pricing. I've been happy with them up to this point, but their reluctance to resolve the matter will send me elsewhere.

I was first introduced to Midwest through a groupon that had a great deal on a homebrewing starter kit. I haven't looked back since.

They have nearly everything a homebrewer could want. The selection is phenomenal. All of the ingredients that I've gotten have always been very fresh and packaged to remain fresh if you don't use them right away. Their service is also great. I made a fairly big order one day, one of the items being a plastic hydrometer test jar. They gave me a better glass one instead of the plastic one just because of my business. Not a huge price difference, but I really appreciated the gesture. As far as prices, they're either better or the same as other suppliers that I've looked at. Shipping is especially cheap compared to other suppliers (but I guess that depends on where they're shipping to).

Overall, Midwest is great. I highly recommend them for all of your homebrewing needs.

The store seems like a Costco/Sam's club in it's layout, but once you figure out the layout, most things are easy to find. The quality of the goods are high, with all things I've purchased being very fresh. Service is generally solid and knowledgable, but since they do so many things other than homebrewing, not all their people are able to help you. They have most everything the homebrewer needs and at competitive prices. A good amount of hops and yeast strains. Definitely a good place to get supplies.

I only wish I was closer to Midwest. I often use a competitor based solely on the fact that is is closer.

The warehouse type setting here isn't the most inviting but it certainly holds a lot of product.

The service I receive at Midwest isn't overwhelming but it is very well informed and always available.

I like the fact that you can get nearly any supply you need for brewing, winemaking, cheesemaking, hot sauce making, etc. Each and every little piece (from grommets to tubing to lactic acid) is available and priced reasonably.

Even with the inconvenience of the location, I intentionally make my way to Midwest at least every few months.

I have a local homebrew shop with a real nice old man, but his selection is limited. I wanted to make a specialty beer from some ideas in my head, and not only did he not have what I needed but as a traditionalist tried to talk me out of my creative idea. I found Midwest and with no questions asked found everything I was looking for. The selection was excellent, and delivery was quick. I found lots of specialty grains and exactly the ingredients I needed for yeast, grain, and hops. I must say that the fresh, quality ingredients led to an excellent and award winning rum raisin stout that my homebrew club raved about. The selection, service and quality were top notch. They also had everything you could need equipment wise too. Will use these guys again and again.

The selection is very diverse, prices are very reasonable, and the service is outstanding. I had an issue with one of my orders. After calling the company they were quick to take action and get things resolved immediately and to my satisfaction. They're quickly becoming my "go-to" for any and all homebrew equipment and supply needs.

I have used them for online orders and been in their new and old locations both...

The quality of their ingredients is above reproach. They have scads of every type of yeast I can desire, both WY (pitchable & starters) & WLP that all seem fresher than I could want. All the hops are vacuum sealed and kept frozen. Tons of malts... What more could you ask for? Apparently I have read that their mill is mediocre, but I have never used it.

The service is fantastic, I have walked in a number of times and had the first person I see and approach walk me around the store for half an hour getting everything I need on my list. When I order from these guys, I make it worth my while :)

Selection? I can't think of anything I want that they don't have. Seriously. They have everything from the beginning brewer to the nano-brewer (and vintner!)

Cheap, cheap, cheap, even with shipping... If you can go into the store though the prices are even better.

Their grain room is large and easy to maneuver within. They even added an electronic grain tracking system for easy check out and tracking! Their hop selection is almost always stocked and they have every yeast you could need. Their premade kits are great too. Ive used a few of them and they always turn out great.

Midwest's equipment is top notch too. They have everything you need for your first brew along with the equipment one would need as an experienced home brewer. Plus, if you are a part of the St. Paul Home Brewers Club you get at 10% discount on everything in the store!

Great place for beer equipment, grain, hops, and yeast! Plus friendly service to boot!

I love Midwest Supplies. I originally started my homebrew experience with one of their simple kits. From there I have ordered everything from ingredients, to almost all of the supplies for setting up my draft system. I also ordered hop rhizomes from them and they came to me moist and cool, and they are yielding in the first season of planting.

Their customer service is great. If you need to change your order, they are happy to help out, unlike some other places (Austin Homebrew Supply). Also, though they do not have tons of shipping options like places like Chi Company, their shipping usually only takes a couple days. I live in Ohio, so I'm pretty close to St. Paul and it takes about three days to get my items.

My only complaint is that some of their equipment and ingredients are out of stock. I'm sure this has to do with demand, and other factors, but it something to consider.

All in all Midwest is my go to supplier. I have tried all the other big homebrew supply companies, but they just don't compare.

I have been an off and on homebrewer that is in the midst of a very long "on" streak. I have gone to other stores that are more convenient, but ventured to Midwest recently. They are in a new location that is not in the photo and not on Belt Line incidentally. Go to their website for the address if you aren't familiar with the new location. The most impressive thing about the new location is the size of it. Its absolutely huge and I can't imagine that there is anything they don't have. They had everything that I could want for my little operation and I saw plenty of folks buying lines and fixtures for home keg setups. It was crazy busy the day I was there, but the service was still good. My only complaint is that the workers were dressed in plain clothes and with so many people in the store it was tough to tell who worked there unless they were behind a register or organizing a shelf. If I had been a regular I might have recognized the folks, but that was not the case obviously. The prices seemed reasonable and I have paged through their catalogue and noticed that many of their more expensive items are a few dollars cheaper than you could get elsewhere. I was very impressed overall.

Did my first business with Midwest today. Located in a warehouse, the store has everything laid out and is pretty well organized. Walking the aisles, I was able to find all I was looking for rather quickly. Prices were a little better than another twin cities homebrew supply store that I typically shop at. Not sure if it's the exact same equipment, but it looked to be of quality. Service was good, but not great. Only appeared to be one or two people who really knew their beer, but I was able to have my questions answered regardless. I was very happy with my experience and I would do business with Midwest again.

Having purchased mail order supplies from here, I decided to stop in while on a business trip to Minneapolis. I was very impressed with the massive retail selection and the attached warehouse.

There are many refrigerators full of yeast, hops and malt. There are quite a few aisles of grains and beer-making supplies.

The staff was great and were willing to take quite some time to chat about the brewing art with me. They even let me take a few interior photos for my digital scrapbook.

The supplies I ordered online were fairly priced, delivered quickly and were exactly what I ordered.

I was formulating a recipe and while doing so shopping to see what the cost total for the brew would be, after viewing the price of ingredients in the cart decided to go ahead and buy from Midwest as the prices were very reasonable. They are in Minnesota which is halfway across the country for me, but I still got everything in about 5 days from ordering which is pretty good service if you ask me.

I found their website one of the easiest to navigate which is why the get such high quality score along with the condition of the ingredients. I felt the pack job was very good too which is why I feel service was worthy of a 4.5 - the order came complete too, so no complaints with accuracy either. I found the selection of available ingredients was decent, not lacking in quantity of items, however some ingredients were out of stock which I understand may not be their fault - seasonal, demand situation effects this.

I was very pleased with the pricing, service and quality overall and will definitely order from Midwest againg as they kept me updated with when the order shipped and I am happy with the time to deliver considering they are about 6 states away from me. Give them a try you'll be satisfied.

Shipping is a bit high but that is not their fault. They charge what FedEx charges.
Midwest often has sale prices on hops that cannot be beaten by any competetor. Their respective malt brand is high quality and the majority of their recipe kits are spot on in regards to classification and quality.

The website is easy to use, and funtional. I apprciate the orginization of the menus as I find them logical to the way I fill my recipies.

I also recieved a great how to video on home brewing with a section on all grain that gave me the guts to try it (now that is all I do)

The only downside is that shipping is expensive and very slow in New Jersey (7 or 8 days usually).

I've seen actual customer service issues that show they're flexible and will work with you on any problems with the quality of your order, even when it's probably your fault. Their products are fresh and they seem to welcome returns of inferior products. Good equipment selection and descriptions. Seem to be top rate. I would recommend patronizing them. Price vs. products are reasonable and satisfactory. I would speculate they must have a good turnover on grains which results in fresh products even to small order guys like me.

I use MWS as one of my "two" primary online homebrew supply shops (Northern Brewer being my other supplier). I have ordered beer kits, ingredients, wine kits, and brewing/wine making kits from this shop. I live in Florida. Shipping is always prompt and reliable. The Customer Service is great via aemail or by phone. Order/Shipping mistakes are corrected promptly with no hassles or loops to jump though. Ingredients are fresh and the staff is always helpful before or after an order for questions about brewing/winemaking. The DVD they offer is helpful for new people starting out.

I have found MWS to usually be the best price on *most* items, however the shipping rate varies with MWS. As a result, most times MWS & NB total price with shipping is always very close. You can not go wrong with MWS. You can always order with confidence, hassle free, with quailty prompt products.

The web site can be a bit of a hassle, no wishlist or order history, but overall a great online store!

Their prices seem to beat just about everywhere else I looked. The shipping is a little more than others, but their good prices offset that. I have placed two separate orders through Midwest. I will most definately order more from them in the near future.

Edit:

After several orders from a friend and myself of their online shop, it is understood that you will not get an order that isn't screwed up somehow. This doesn't reflect well on a business that can't get shipments out correctly atleast half the time? Orders have either came damaged or missing an item or two. I have been ordering from this place a lot recently, but have never been to their store. Their selection is massive and pretty much every single thing you need can be ordered from their website. I have had minor problems with pretty much every order I've placed though. It's not usually anything major though. For example, I ordered a keg post but it didn't have a poppet valve, a CO2 assembly missing a clamp, a kegging system with a faulty regulator. Sure, these are all great annoyances, but the good thing is that Midwest's customer service is always quick to provide a solution in the form of sending the missing piece within a few days. The thing that keeps me ordering from them is their prices. Everything is cheaper than Northern Brewer or Austin Homebrew, the other two places that I have shopped online for supplies. Even with the flat rate shipping of AHB and NB, Midwest still ends up cheaper with actual shipping, even for a sack of grain, which costs $60 here, and $75 at NB. I'd recommend this place for the prices more so than the quality. Don't get me wrong, all the grains and hops are top notch and I've never had any sort of problem with that area. They even list the alpha acid of their hops on the website, which helps when trying to calculate IBUs in a recipe. Just be careful if you are ordering something with many small parts as they tend to lose the pieces in the process of fulfilling the order.

Service: The first time I used them it was actually off eBay. It seemed that it was cheaper than using their site and the equipment was on my door in 72 hrs. The next I that I ordered from them it seemed more expensive and I paid more in shipping because I wanted the kit faster but it took two week almost to get it. The catalog they send is great. It is full of stuff I would not even think of to look for and it is full of lots of great tips and facts. The DVD that comes with the brewing equipment is great too. It is homemade but that was one of the things I liked most about it. It covers both extract, whole grain brewing and wine making. It is also easy to follow. They have a live question hotline that I have used a few times. One time the guy was a little rude but most of the time they are real friendly. Before I forget they should pack their shipments better. My malt extract was leaking.

Selection: Awesome! The selection of equipment and books is great. Even with the hops shortage they seem to be doing alright. It seems like they have everything as far as kit and ingredients there is a bit of every major style.

Price: It seems to be aright depending on what you want.

This was the only homebrew shop I patronized before I moved from Minnesota to West Virginia, so I can not compare it to other competitors like Norther Brewer, but I found the place very nice. The selection of grains and hops was great and the kit selection was far better than NB, at least by what I saw online. Being relatively new to homebrewing, I was never disappointed by the supplies that were always in stock. For any need I had, they had the product I needed, and then some.

I have to agree with past contributors, however. The assistance is awful. If you know what you want, and have been there before, it doesn't matter, because you know where to go. But if you have questions, it is a pain to get any sort of help. On top of that, the help you find doesn't want to help you.

Overall, I have found in the Minneapolis area, if you are budget conscious, this is the place to go. In fact, being hard pressed now in WV, I may just order from here still, as I have found the prices are very competitive nationally, as well.

I just started homebrewing 6 months ago. This is where I picked up all my starting equipment. I went with their intermediate set w/ the two glass carboys. I was really amazed by the size of the place. Also, the staff was very helpful and guided me in picking out the needed supplies. They have also been quite helpful in discussing techniques for treating my water and discussing different yeasts and adjuncts. The grain room is very nice and you can grind your own or they will do it for you. Nice hop selection as well. The best part about this place is the prices. They are some of the best I've seen when compared to other homebrew shops online. I will continue to go to Midwest for my homebrewing supplies in the future. If I move away, I'll probably order stuff online from them.

Just ordered my first starters kit from here along with a few extra gadgets. Purchased online, great website, easy to navigate and confirmation emails arrived almost instantly. Ordered and exactly 1 week later everything arrived (MN to NV) so I was impressed with that and they provided a tracking number so you could keep your eyes on the package. Everything was packed well and arrived in great shape. Best part for a starter like me was the free DVD you can get. I've been reading for months now and spent hours on this site getting tips but they go through everything and show you how its done. It was an immense help. I know I'll be ordered from them in the future.

This is another great source for home brewers. They have pretty good prices. The times that I have ordered from here I received my stuff pretty fast and it was packaged well. I have ordered both beer and wine supplies from them in the past with no problems. I have never been to the actual store but did my shopping online. They have a pretty nice website that is easy to navigate. This shop is also very good about introducing new products to its customers.
Although I have not bought a kit from them it looks like they have a large variety of them to choose from. I would have no problem recommending using them for supplies.

I tried a variety of homebrew shops when I first started brewing, but I keep on returning to the local shops because we've got some of the best shops in the nation here in Minnesota. Midwest is no exception. Quality is top-notch. Midwest seems to do a lot of mailorder, so their grain, hops and yeast are always fresh and thankfully in-stock. In-store service is always good, too. The place is staffed by enthusiastic brewers who are friendly and willing to lend a hand. The selection is great, too. I haven't made a kit in a while, but I made 7-8 of Midwest's kits when I first started brewing and despite my novice skillset, the beers came out great. They carry a variety of beer kits to suit all tastes. Their grain, hop and yeast selection cover all of the bases and they've always had everything I've needed for just about every recipe. The equipment selection is also quite good, with everything from kegging equipment to grain mills to Better Bottles. Overall, a really great shop.

Stopped in to Midwest this morning to pick up a beginning homebrewing kit and was very impressed. The store is housed in a large warehouse, and from the looks of it, has everything you could ever want. I was greeted promptly and wasn't prodded or pushed for a sale. I had a conversation with the clerk, who was a home-brewer himself, and he answered all of my questions. I ended up getting just what I needed, and was out the door quickly.
The clerk informed me that if there was anything I needed, from information to further equipment or help in the brewing process to simply call and ask. I felt like I had made a very good investment with my money and also found an establishment I could trust. The prices of kits and brewing accessories was comparable, if not cheaper, than many of the other supply stores in the Twin Cities area, and if the clerk informed me that if they didn't have something in stock, they could special order it for you. Very close to where I live, so I'm positive I will be back.

Quality: Midwest's non-consumable inventory quality is much better than average. A nice wide array of toys and paraphenalia available for most budgets. Their consumable (read: ingredients) inventory is equally wide, but suffers from aged inventory problems, imho. Most noticable is the yeast and Hops tend to be aged. A little extra time priming the yeast is ok by me, but i've usually got to add half again as much hops as thier recipie calls for in order to get my target.

Service: Midwest's Service is Great IF YOU CALL AND HAPPEN TO REACH THE OWNER. Other than that they've managed to mess up half of my orders. Usually by forgetting something critical. Like say: the yeast. Trying to resolve thier last mistake took over a month (well past the window I had to brew) and I still didnt get my materials. The CSR had *mistakenly* (?) placed my order on his desk and forgot to pass it on for filling. My only consolation from the CSR once he got things rolling again was "Free shipping" even though I cannot possibly brew in whats left of this season.

Selection: Please see my Quality section

Value: Midwest is a little pricier than compairable companies figuring in the price of shipping, and giving thier poor service in filling orders promptly and correctly, i'd recommend looking elsewhere for your brewing needs.
