KALAMAZOO -- Looking for the new location of the Plumcrazzy Ice Cream Parlor on South Westnedge Avenue?
It's that building that screams purple, near the pedestrian skywalk south of Cork Street.
The building has purple trim and a purple awning. The front sign is plum-colored, just like the chairs and windowsills inside."It's that crazy woman's purple -- same as her hair," joked co-owner Kathe Burnham about herself.
Burnham and her husband, Dale, opened the shop at the new site, 3710 S. Westnedge Ave., Friday after renovating the building for four months. They moved the business from 1838 S. Westnedge Ave., where they had operated Plumcrazzy from 2006 to Nov. 1, 2008.
The new location is brighter than the former one, has about twice the seating -- 28 chairs, 12 more than at the former site -- and has a larger kitchen.
The kitchen has allowed the Burnhams to expand their menu. They have added white chicken chili, and tuna and egg-salad sandwiches to the menu, which already had corned beef, ham, turkey and salami sandwiches.
But the focus has always been on ice cream at Plumcrazzy, and the new location features 45 flavors of Plainwell Ice Cream. Black-raspberry ice cream, the color of plums, is the restaurant's signature flavor. Beyond that, Kathe Burnham favors the black walnut ice cream, she said. Three of the Plumcrazzy flavors are sugar-free: fudge ripple, vanilla and butter pecan.
Kathe Burnham said local students have liked Plumcrazzy's Wednesday B.Y.O.B special --when you can bring your own banana and get a banana split made with it for $3.50, which is $1.75 less than the regular $5.25 cost of the dessert.
