Am I wrong to admit that I really looked forward to a return visit to Michaelangelo's? My initial foray into the restaurant four years ago was so perfect -- from the aroma wafting into the elegant lobby through the spot-on service, simple food and exacting attention to detail -- that I completed several other reviews before going back. Frankly, I was saving one of the very best for last. Pristine salads (one of the best Caesars around, and a vividly fresh spinach and fresh strawberry amalgam scattered with nuggets of fried pancetta) led to a richly sauced veal-stuffed tortellini. The rack of lamb combined superior-quality meat and expert grillwork, coupled with delicious garlic-braised escarole and cannellini beans mingling in savory juices. Saltimbocca-style sauteed chicken breast was a mellow (and moderately priced) alternative. Michaelangelo's provides a dining experience that could serve as a model for all sorts of restaurants, whatever their price point or point of view.
