‘Dancing With the Stars’ ’ Brooke Burke lists her L.A. favorites

Share

“Dancing With the Stars” kicks off its 10th season Monday night on ABC, and a familiar face will be on hand. Brooke Burke, who won the Season 7 competition with partner Derek Hough, returns not for another crack at a title, but to share hosting duties with Tom Bergeron.

Burke, a mother of four who lives in Malibu with actor-singer David Charvet, admits she hasn’t been on a dance floor since her Season 7 triumph (“I mean, where are you going to go ballroom dancing in L.A.?”), but she knows how to stay busy.

FOR THE RECORD:
My Favorite Weekend: In the My Favorite Weekend feature in Saturday’s Calendar section, one of Brooke Burke’s weekend picks was listed as the Malibu Inn. It is the Malibu Beach Inn. —

Table for two

For a romantic getaway restaurant, I want to mention Geoffrey’s, which has one of the most beautiful ocean views in Malibu. It’s got open-air dining with tables for two right on the edge of the property, overlooking the water. It’s got a fantastic wine list and an incredible chef, and you can get anything from casual salads to grilled fish to wrapped phyllo-dough pastries. They also have a wonderful tuna tartare appetizer. It’s definitely one of the nicer restaurants in town, but it’s still Malibu, so if you want to show up casual, that’s OK too.

Table for six

For breakfast family-style, we like Coogies right here in Malibu. First off, they have a great fish tank that the kids like to look at, and they have an incredible breakfast quesadilla, which I order with egg whites. And there are good waffles, pancakes, omelets, salmon, and a great cappuccino.

Local picks

There’s a small boutique hotel called the Malibu Beach Inn, and I love to go there for breakfast, lunch or maybe a sunset dinner. The place used to be a dive, but it’s been remodeled and now it is fantastic. There are maybe eight or 10 tables overlooking the water and the pier, and you can have a nice lunch and then the kids can walk right down the stairs to the beach.

For shopping, it’s hard to beat Malibu, because it’s got everything. You’ve got Planet Blue -- a one-stop shop for everything from casual wear to gorgeous dresses -- and there’s La Perla for lingerie, and I love Alice + Olivia. Those are my favorites.

There’s karaoke that’s rotating in Malibu, real old-school fun. I know there’s a night at Charlie’s. I’d rather die than get up and sing, but I like watching everybody else do it.

Working up a sweat

I’ve been doing Pilates for 10 years, but there’s this new trend that’s happening and it’s called Pilates Plus, and they’re opening studios all over. There’s one in Malibu, in Hollywood, one in the Valley, all over. It’s the most intense, hardest, best workout I’ve ever done, and I’ve done them all. It’s totally changing my body, and just with a 55-minute head-to-toes workout. I feel like I’m doing a commercial, but I’m not affiliated with it at all.

Down the coast

If we want to go out of the area, we love Capo in Santa Monica. There’s no signage outside, but it’s on Ocean Avenue. It’s cozy with a fireplace and a great bar, and the food is impeccable. It’s quite expensive, to tell you the truth, but it’s great once in a while.
