Now that he has lunch up and running at the new Oscar's at the Museum, proprietor Jim Cobb of A Social Affair catering is ready to serve Sunday brunch to visitors at the Birmingham Museum of Art.

"It gives people an opportunity to visit the museum and have a leisurely Sunday afternoon brunch," Cobb says.

The buffet-style brunches begin this Sunday and will continue on the first and third Sundays of every month. Hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In celebration of Saturday's opening of the museum's "Fashioning Kimono: Art Deco and Modernism in Japan" exhibit, the first brunch will also include live music from husband-and-wife Truong Nguyen and Yuriko Yasuda.

Future entertainment will feature Dixieland jazz musicians, bluegrass pickers, mariachi bands and gospel singers, Cobb says, and the menus will be themed to go with the music.

"With bluegrass, we will probably do down-home Southern food, maybe even peas and okra and fried chicken with biscuits and sorghum syrup," he says.

The first menu features baby spinach salad with orange sections, toasted almonds, feta cheese and raspberry poppy seed dressing; Alabama field greens; farm-fresh berries; summer melons; Charleston red-eye gravy with shrimp and Alabama stone-ground grits; applewood-smoked bacon; chicken grillades; potatoes Anna; chilled asparagus spears with homespun green goddess dressing; apricot and ginger-cured smoked sides of salmon; fruit muffins; bite-size bagels, and croissants.

The buffet also includes a chef-attended omelet station and a dessert station with Bananas Foster, Peach Melba and Cherries Jubilee.

Also, guests will receive a surprise treat after they sit down at their tables.

"We don't want them to know," Cobb says. "We want it to be a surprise."

The cost is $22 for adults and $14 for children under 12, and the price includes coffee, tea, soft drinks, orange juice, and, for the adults, a complimentary mimosa or glass of champagne.

Beer, wine, bloody marys and additional mimosas or glasses of champagne are extra.

In addition to Sunday brunch, Oscar's at the Museum is also open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.

The Birmingham Museum of Art is at 2000 Eighth Ave. North.
