best of burnaby The businesses listed in this special section have been selected as the best in their specific categories by the readers of the Burnaby NOW. As you may recall, we published ballots early this year and offered a $2,000 shopping spree as an incentive to cast your votes for your favourites in over 100 different categories. The $2,000 shopping spree is provided courtesy of Metropolis at Metrotown, Lougheed Town Centre and Brentwood Town Centre. Well it worked! We counted thousands of official Burnaby NOW Ballots, in paper and online, and tabulated winners for all categories.

The $2,000 shopping spree winner was drawn and is pictured below receiving her prize. While this wasn’t a scientific survey, the level of participation does lend credibility to the outcome. Most market research is based on the responses of a much smaller segment of the population. The 2010 Best of Burnaby winners are most deserving of our recognition as simply the “Best in Burnaby”. But don’t take our word for it. Why not visit each of the businesses listed in this special feature and decide for yourself. Then, next year you’ll be more qualified to cast your votes in our 14th Annual Best of Burnaby Awards.

Congratulations! A $2,000 Shopping Spree, courtesy of Metropolis at Metrotown, Lougheed Town Centre and Brentwood Town Centre was offered as an incentive for readers to cast their ballots for their favourites in over 100 different categories. The winner is Burnaby resident, Marion Quinn. Her thank-you note is published below.

Fox is on top again When it comes to Burnaby’s favourite celebrity, it’s long been the battle of the Michaels. Actor Michael J. Fox and singer Michael Bublé have duelled it out for the past few years for the honour of Best Burnaby Celebrity – and this year, Fox won it back. It’s been more than 25 years since the actor first made a name for himself on the small screen as Alex P. Keaton on the sitcom Family Ties. The now 48-year-old actor was born in Edmonton but grew up locally after his family settled in Burnaby. Since then, he has gone on to forge a career as an international superstar, rising to prominence with films such as the Back to the Future trilogy, Bright Lights, Big City and Doc Hollywood. On TV, he followed up his Family Ties success with a role as Deputy Mayor Mike Flaherty on Spin City.

And, all the while, the hometown favourite has maintained his close ties to the city, hosting a fundraising charity golf tournament each year to help raise funds for the theatre in South Burnaby that bears his name – a golf tournament for which he returns to the city each year. He also presents scholarships to students interested in pursuing careers in film or the arts. Fox has also become a prominent spokesperson and fundraiser for Parkinson’s disease research since revealing in 1998 that he has the disease. He set up the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research – which, according to its website, has funded almost $176 million in research and has become, in the words of The New York Times, “the most credible voice on Parkinson’s research in the world.” See www.michaeljfox.org.

“My view is that I’m not in elected office to be a coward, and I’m not there to get along, I’m there to do what’s right, and so I stand my ground.” It’s a philosophy Corrigan has lived by since first being elected to council in 1987. Together, he and his wife, Kathy, are becoming something of a dynasty in Burnaby politics. Kathy Corrigan, former chair of the Burnaby school board, is now the New Democrat MLA for Burnaby-Deer Lake. Derek Corrigan has served in many capacities over his years in politics, including with TransLink, the Greater Vancouver Regional District and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. He also works with International Mayors for Peace. He and Kathy have been married for more than 30 years and raised four children in Burnaby.

YO

After all these years, it can’t surprise anybody too much that Derek Corrigan is a popular guy. He is, for certain, one of the most recognized names and faces on the municipal political scene in British Columbia. Once again, Burnaby NOW readers have named the city’s mayor as Best Politician. Corrigan is well into his third term as the city’s mayor. He continues to make headlines throughout the region and continues to carry a reputation as the outspoken, opinionated leader who doesn’t back down from a fight. On regional, provincial and national issues from taxes to transportation, health care to homelessness, Corrigan continues to speak out – even if his is a sometimes solitary voice. “I’m a lonely guy, and I’m consistently a lonely guy,” he told the NOW in February, in an interview about TransLink.

Thank you to our 2 legged friends for voting for us. We are proud to be BURNABY’S BEST DOGGY DAYCARE.

Deer Lake the top spot for live music From hip hop to the blues, from rock to the symphony, Deer Lake Park has been home to just about every style of musical performance under the sun. So it’s no wonder that, yet again, Burnaby NOW readers have voted Deer Lake Park as the Best Place to Listen to Music. For anyone who has ever mellowed out at one of the park’s many music festivals or spread out a picnic blanket to take in the popular annual Symphony in the Park event, the park’s appeal as a music venue is unmistakable. With its sloping lawn looking down towards the lake, the site capitalizes on a natural amphitheatre with the capacity for as many as 10,000 people. Its popularity as a live music venue speaks to the city’s ongoing investment in the park, designed to ensure it becomes and remains a premier performance venue. Money and time has been spent on upgrading drainage, lighting, fencing, pathways and more to help make the park an accessible and appealing venue. And there’s no denying that it’s working. With a stage perched at the edge of the lake, and Deer Lake itself providing the backdrop, the venue offers an unsurpassed combination of natural beauty and excellent sightlines and acoustics for audience members.

The park draws people from far and wide for its regular feature concerts, foremost among them the Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival (set for Saturday, Aug. 14 this year) and the Symphony in the Park (set for Sunday, July 11), featuring the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in a free concert. The yearly calendar also features a number of other festivals and performances – last year, the Virgin Festival brought top rock acts to the city, and the Rock the Bells Festival drew the hip hop crowd. Over recent years, the park has attracted a number of big-name Canadian and international acts, with such performers as Sam Roberts, Cyndi Lauper, Michael Bublé, the Black Eyed Peas and the B-52s all making appearances at the lake. An added draw for visitors, of course, is that the Deer Lake Park site itself is surrounded by possibilities for a day of exploring. There’s a sandy beach on the east end of the lake, and a grid of walking trails circles the lake and extends into the surrounding area. The lake offers a place to launch canoes and sailboats, as well as summertime rentals of kayaks, canoes, rowboats and pedal boats. The area is also home to the Burnaby Art Gallery, the Burnaby Village Museum, the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts and the Hart House Restaurant.

Hats Off to the city’s favourite festival – again Just look through a sampling of photos that have been taken for past years’ Hats Off Day festivals, and you’ll see why the festival keeps on winning the votes of Burnaby NOW readers. You’ll see the wide range of people who attend the festival – of all ages, cultures and backgrounds – and you’ll see that they all have one thing in common: They had a whole lotta fun. NOW readers have once again lent their support to Hats Off Day as the Best Burnaby Festival – following up on its

wins in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. Each year, on the first Saturday in June, the Heights neighbourhood in North Burnaby “takes its hat off” to the community and hits the streets to celebrate. This year’s edition of the festival is set for Saturday, June 5. The festival runs along Hastings Street, between Boundary Road and Gamma Avenue. Hosted by the Heights Merchants Association and organized by a committee representing a wide range of com-

munity groups, the one-day extravaganza draws business, residents and visitors together for a massive celebration. The day traditionally begins with a pancake breakfast. A highlight of the day is the colourful and crowd-pleasing “Main-Street-style” parade, featuring a wide variety of community groups from many cultures showcasing their contributions to the community. Throughout the day, Hastings Street is closed to traffic to give people a chance to sample from a wide range of tasty

treats, take in entertainment and enjoy giveaways, draws, prizes and special promotions from merchants in the neighbourhood. The Heights Merchants Association is joined by a wide range of community partners for the day, as well as a crew of volunteers. Anyone interested in getting involved in the 2010 festival or in finding out more about it can visit www.hatsoffday.com, e-mail info@burnabyheights.com or call 604-294-8899.

Love is in the air: Pete and Sayo take a romantic moment at the top of Burnaby Mountain. The mountain’s sweeping views and gardens have once again helped to earn it the title of Best Place for a Secret Rendezvous. Jason Lang/ burnaby now

Mountain wins your hearts Just stand there and look out over the views – Burrard Inlet, downtown Vancouver, the North Shore mountains – and you’ll know in an instant why, year after year, Burnaby NOW readers continue to vote for Burnaby Mountain. It captured two of our Readers’ Choice awards this year – one for Best Place for a Picnic, the other for Best Place for a Secret Rendezvous. For picnickers, there’s no question it’s a wonderful place to take a basket. Taking a meal to the picnic tables overlooking the Inlet or spreading out a blanket on the grassy slope provides you with a backdrop like no other, regardless of your meal. Those who prefer someone else to do the cooking can find fine cuisine at Horizons restaurant. As for a rendezvous with that special someone, well, if you can’t find something to appeal to the romantic in you somewhere in the mountain’s 1,400

acres of natural beauty, you’ll be hard-pressed to find it anywhere. Art lovers will be captivated by the Kamui Mintara – the Playground of the Gods sculpture, a dozen carved poles created by Japanese sculptors Nuburi Toko and his son, Shusei. The sculptures mark the goodwill between Burnaby and its sister city of Kushiro, Japan. The nearby rose garden offers a fragrant place for a springtime visit, while the green lawns offer a spot to walk, play or sit and daydream – or, in winter, to play in the snow to your heart’s content. Those looking for a quiet stroll can ramble through the trails that trace their way through the trees. Just one warning: If you really are planning a secret rendezvous, we’re pretty sure you won’t be alone. NOW readers are keeping the park so popular that we fear the “secret” was out long ago.

City’s best: Staff and volunteers from the Health Action Network Society are all smiles after capturing the Best Community Service Organization award.

Here’s what The Mulberry residents are saying “You’ll love it!” “I wish I moved in here sooner.” “. . .the staff and managers are wonderful.” “. . .I like the food. And we have lots of choices, too.” “I have my lovely suite for when I want time to myself.” “Everything is handy – a clinic, stores, banks – all you need.” “I’m not lonesome. We’re family here. The people are so friendly.” “I like to keep active. There is always something going on, something fun to do!”

Larry Wright/ burnaby now

Health promoters More than 30 years ago, a handful of people in the community saw a lack of public knowledge about natural medicine and wanted to do something about it. They got together to form an educational society to host events and educate the public – and, in 1980, held their first health conference. Three decades later, they’ve proven their worth – and the Health Action Network Society has once again captured the votes of Burnaby NOW readers as Best Community Service Organization in the city. Graham Boyes, who’s been an employee since 2005 and a volunteer since about 1998, says it’s encouraging for the group to win such an award given that it relies on support from the public. “We’re almost entirely supported by our members,” he said, noting there’s only a “small amount” of government funding and the rest comes from sup-

porters, from right here in Burnaby and across the country. “Most of our funding is from people like the citizens of Burnaby. … We really appreciate knowing the citizens appreciate the work we’re doing.” Boyes added the group is “really excited” to win the honour three years in a row. The Health Action Network Society is a busy group, based on Rumble Street, with a mission to provide information on preventive medicine and natural therapeutics. It hosts a website, houses a reference library, publishes Health Action magazine and an e-newsletter and hosts a series of regular educational and networking events. The group fields 25,000 inquiries a year from members of the public. For more about the group and its work, check out www.hans.org.

The Best of Burnaby Awards are a reflection of the Burnaby Now readers’ choice of the Best Businesses in their community. Walking the river The park has extra appeal for dogwalkers, since dogs are allowed to walk off-leash along the Byrne Creek dike trail, as well as in a seasonal off-leash area in the meadow. The park also offers a playground, picnic areas (including two large group picnic areas that are available for reservation) and plenty of opportunities for fishing. The park is easily accessible from Marine Way – turn south on Byrne Road and follow it to the very end. Plenty of parking, including wheelchair-accessible spots, is available. It’s the place to go to let your canine companion romp – and for you to enjoy the magic of the Fraser River and the forest. Once again, Burnaby Fraser Foreshore Park topped the list among Burnaby NOW voters as Best Place to Walk Your Dog. The win will come as no surprise to anyone who’s ever walked there and seen the vast number of walkers out – with or without their pets – enjoying the wellmaintained park trails. A highlight of the park is a nearly fourkilometre flat walk, starting from the main parking lot at Fraser Park Drive. It follows the river east, winds through a raptor meadow, loops around the meadow and then connects back to the original trail, all the while offering an abundance of scenery and wildlife for your enjoyment.

Avatar tops for moviegoers James Cameron’s huge-budget 3-D epic may not have won the top Oscar at this year’s Academy Awards, but it’s clearly the Best Picture for Burnaby NOW readers. Avatar won the votes of our readers as Best Movie of the Year. While last year’s nod went to the small-budget “little movie that could,” Slumdog Millionaire, this year, it seems, readers were convinced by an all-out smash blockbuster that’s set new records for box-office earnings. And who’s to argue? The groundbreaking special created a mesmerizing world and

brought viewers straight to the heart of the planet Pandora, where paraplegic Marine Jake Sully is sent on a mission to help fill the shoes of his brother. The clash that ensues between the planet’s native inhabitants – the beautiful and blue Na’vi – and the corporate greed of Earth sets up an adventure film with a political message. Throw in a love story between Jake (Sam Worthington) and the lovely Na’vi Neytiri (Zoe Zaldana), and you’ve created all the elements for a magical and entertaining film. Renowned film critic Roger

Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times said: “Once again, (Cameron) has silenced the doubters by simply delivering an extraordinary film. There is still at least one man in Hollywood who knows how to spend $250 million, or was it $300 million, wisely.” It’s no surprise that the film was nominated for nine Oscars, taking home three – for visual effects, cinematography and art direction. To those who missed it, never fear – with all the buzz around this movie, it seems this film is not likely to vanish from theatres any time soon.

Entertainment while you shop: Hughes Aubry, a member of the Flying Canucks acrobatic team, performs at Metropolis at Metrotown, which captured two Readers’ Choice awards again.

Metropolis is the place to be Whether it’s celebrating the spirit of the Olympic torch relay, hosting performances by the Flying Canucks acrobatic team or marking Earth Hour, you know that Metropolis at Metrotown is going to be tuned in to whatever’s on people’s minds. The mall is also active on Facebook and Twitter, keeping people up-to-date on all the happenings at the shopping centre. So it’s probably no surprise that it continues to be among the most popular destinations around. Metropolis at Metrotown has once again won Burnaby NOW readers’ votes as the Best Place for People Watching and the Best Place for Window Shopping. It’s not hard to see why the mall is such a draw. With more than 450 stores, it’s B.C.’s largest shopping centre. Major stores include The Bay, Sears, Chapters, Zellers and Real Canadian Superstore – and a whole lot of others in between. Shoppers have their pick of options for everything from art, collectibles and home furnishings to shoes, cosmetics, clothing – from casual wear to high-end designer options – and jewelry. Those looking for some pampering have a choice of spas and hair salons. With its mix of big-name

stores and small businesses, it’s impossible not to find something to admire – and probably buy – at the mall. As far as people-watching goes, the options are just as endless. From the streams of commuters pouring off the SkyTrain at Metrotown station, to the students gathering at SilverCity, to the variety of shoppers, young and old, who migrate to this shopping mecca, you can’t help but be surrounded by people. If you need to sit and take a break while you’re watching, you’re in luck. Eating options in the shopping centre include cafés, coffee shops and a remodelled food court – the largest in Western Canada, seating more than 1,000 people – with an array of choices to please any palate. And the good news is, coming and going from Metropolis at Metrotown couldn’t be easier. In the spotlight: Robyn DriedgerKlassen and Megan Morrison in Burnaby Lyric Opera’s Cosi fan tutte at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts in February.

Thank You Burnaby

File photo/ burnaby now

Shadbolt Centre tops The setting is unmatched. The architecture is stunning. And, more importantly, what goes on inside is the heart and soul of arts and culture in the city of Burnaby. Once again, the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts has captured Burnaby NOW readers’ votes as the Best Venue for Live Theatre. A quick visit to the centre makes it easy to see why. It’s impossible to find any time when the centre isn’t in use. It’s one of the busiest arts centres around, with its ongoing roster of performances that run the gamut of theatre, dance and music options. It programs a year-round schedule of performances, alongside exhibitions, festivals and special events that draw people from around the city and around the region. It’s the venue of choice for a number of groups, large and small – Burnaby

Lyric Opera, the Burnaby Clef Society, the Old Trout Puppet Workshop and the Arts Club Theatre’s touring productions are among the long list that have found a performance space at the centre. The centre also serves as a hub for people of all ages who are interested in exploring their own creative side, with programs offered in music, dance, visual, ceramic, theatre and literary arts for all ages and abilities. The Shadbolt Centre offers a wide range of venues for local performers and groups, with the 285-seat James Cowan Theatre, a 150-seat Studio Theatre and a whole range of other rooms – dance studios, music rehearsal rooms, meeting rooms, pottery studios, kilns, a scene shop and a café. For more, see its website at www. shadboltcentre.com or stop by 6450 Deer Lake Ave. to check it out for yourself.

Shamins wins “Best Jewellery Store” Again! In the last thirteen years, Shamins has been voted “Best Jewellery Store in the city” twelve times. Founded by Burnaby entrepreneur, Shahraz Kassam, 27 years ago, Shamins has become a household name in the lower mainland. Over the years, Shamins has won Retailer of the Year, Entrepreneur of the Year, as well as being recognized as one of the 100 fastest growing companies in Canada by Profit Magazine. How does a single showroom win so often over dozens of Burnaby jewellers, including chain stores with much larger marketing dollars? Shahraz attributes it to Shamins Mantra... “Every person who comes to Shamins leaves not with jewellery but with a celebration that will be cherished forever. When we have a man come in for an engagement ring, we don’t just see his need for an exceptional diamond. We see the expression on her face, we see the tears of happiness and more than that, we see her reflecting on that diamond 50 years from now and telling her grandchildren about the moment when grandpa Shahraz Kassam proposed to her. His great grand children will one day inherit that Shamin diamond and along with it; the story of his love for their great grandma. There is no other commodity that is so cherished and treasured in our hearts as that special piece of jewellery. When a man comes in to Shamins, he trusts us to make his moment that special.” Shamin’s is no stranger to recessions either. Having been born in the last major recession in the early 80’s, Shamin’s has always strived to deliver value. At Shamin’s we realize that a gift of jewellery has to be

precious but not ridiculously expensive. With factories all over the world and diamonds direct from the diamond cutting centers of the world, Shamins offers the largest selection of unique and beautiful diamond pendants starting at just $29. With prices like that, gift giving is always affordable at Shamins. Anyone can say they have the lowest prices but one look on Shamins website and you can see for yourself the current real time prices on over 30,000 diamonds. Many jewellers will not make their prices public, instead they will offer to beat others prices. At Shamins, we know diamonds and are confident in our pricing. Like anything else there are lower priced diamonds and there are exceptional diamonds. At Shamins, the choice is yours. Many retailers complain that the Internet has taken away business; Shamins embraces the internet by providing not only knowledge and information on their website but also show how certified diamonds with the same grading can vary in price by thousands of dollars. Therefore, that “deal” is not really a deal if you get a diamond that is milky, dull or glows in black light even though the certificate on the internet said “Ideal Cut.” You can go on Shamins website and compare over 30,000 diamonds along with their prices, then simply come in to their showroom across Metrotown and see your diamond in person. Shamins also has the largest selection of unique designs that can be set with your diamond while you wait as well as an in-store lab where anything you can imagine can be custom designed for you. In addition, Shamins has one of the best guarantee programs in the industry, something that the dot-com dealers do not offer. Shamins understands that when a customer is investing hundreds or thousands of dollars, “they expect not only value but our integrity, our expertise and confidence that because our name is on their purchase, we stand proudly behind it”. It’s this combination of business savvy, persistence and a commitment to values and customer service that has kept Shamins at the top of the list for over a decade.

Community spirit: Master Gee – a.k.a. Mark Gildemeester – and his wife, Robyn, run the awardwinning Master Gee’s Black Belt Academy.

FOR VOTING US THE BEST BIKE SHOP 13 YEARS STRAIGHT!

Larry Wright/ burnaby now

Master Gee’s wins Ask how it makes him feel to win the Best Community Spirited Business nod in the Readers’ Choice awards, and he doesn’t hesitate. “Happy. Ecstatic!” That’s Master Gee himself (a.k.a. Mark Gildemeester) about his business, Master Gee’s Black Belt Academy, being honoured as one of the best in Burnaby this year. He noted that the North Burnaby academy – which offers martial arts and self-defence training for all ages and levels – has made it a mission to be a part of the community since it was set up 30 years ago. “We’re quite often out there in the community, in the schools,” he says. The folks from Master Gee’s can be found at just about every community festival and fair, and they’ve often been known to give out passes for free trial lessons so that parents can decide if martial arts is really for their youngster.

At schools, the academy offers lessons in self-defence and, in particular, how to deal with bullies. Gee notes martial arts can be helpful for kids who are bullied or who lack confidence. He says it’s not just about being able to kick or hit the bully in question – in fact, he says, “Striking is the very last thing in a self-defence situation.” Kids are also given the tools to defuse the situation through communication – or, as Gee calls it, “verbal judo.” The academy offers a Little Tigers program for four- to seven-year-olds, junior lessons for the seven- to 12-year-old set and lessons for adults in three martial arts: taekwondo, jiu-jitsu and hapkido, a Korean martial art. Gee runs the business with family members Tasha and Tarl and wife Robyn. Master Gee’s is at 5508 Hastings St. Call 604-294-5425 or see www.myblack belt.com.

Winning form: Head pro Don Mark at Burnaby Mountain Golf Course.

Burnaby Mountain tops with golfers Good value, accessibility in all weather and natural beauty all combine to make Burnaby Mountain Golf Course an attractive place to play. Burnaby NOW readers have voted the course the Best Place to Golf in this year’s annual Readers’ Choice Awards. The news comes as no surprise to David O’Connor, assistant director in charge of golf operations for the city. “I think Burnaby’s always been really famous for being the highest value golf experience in the Lower Mainland,” O’Connor said. Both the city’s municipal courses – Burnaby Mountain and Riverway – are popular, and both have been rated by Golf Digest on their Best Places to Play in North America list. O’Connor noted that the city has made an investment into its courses, doing extensive drainage work at both so that they are dry in the off-season and available in any weather. Which is why, even in winter, Burnaby Mountain remains a draw for locals and visitors alike. “We’ve got a very playable, enjoyable course,” O’Connor said.

The course offers 5,800 to 6,400 yards of natural, tree-lined beauty and rolling terrain to make it appealing to all levels of players. And, of course, it comes with all the amenities, including a fully stocked pro shop, instructional programs for all ages and skill levels, and a clubhouse with a coffee shop, pub/restaurant and full banquet facilities. A new driving range is currently being built at the course, and it’s set to open June 1. And prices remain amongst the best value around, with off-season rates ranging from $18.25 to $32 on weekdays and $20 to $39 on weekends – and even less for seniors ($13.50 to $23.75 weekdays) and juniors ($12 to $20.75 weekdays, $12 to $39 weekends). Check the website for current pricing. Phone reservations are available at 604-280-7355. Along with its two full golf courses, the city also offers pitch and putt at Kensington and Central Park. Check out more about golfing in the city at www.golfburnaby.net.
