Peachfrog is the brainchild of inventory liquidator Howard Blumberg and metal sculptor Bill Norton, who combined their skills to create a discount store that’s custom-fit to Williamsburg. The high-ceilinged showroom used to house a spring-roll factory, and some of its features have been incorporated into Peachfrog’s design: The changing rooms are located under the range-hoods of the factory’s former kitchen, and expanses of bare-brick concrete give the store an industrial, clubbish vibe. The name Peachfrog refers to a Chinese talisman for good financial fortune—appropriate for a store that offers so many designer names at 70 to 90 percent off retail prices. Blumberg’s extensive contacts in the liquidation industry, moreover, ensure a constant flow of new merchandise and markdowns. A lot of the clothing still carries original price tags, so customers can see just how much they’re saving. Brands like Miss Sixty, Killah, Betsey Johnson, and Replay are mainstays on the apparel racks and also appear in the mid-size shoe section beside Diesel sneakers and stylish Tamara Henrique rubber boots. Random home items such as Roman candles, wall mirrors, and silver picture frames can be found as well.
