Finally got around to trying out the live music at Churchill Grounds and I was not disappointed. I can't recall what day of the week it was, but the jazz quintet was on point that night. 4 stars for the music!
As you may already know, the venue is quite small and narrow, but we were able to get a table after some people left.
Tried the spinach/artichoke dip and I would not recommended it: nothing special and way too acidic somehow.
Other than that I just had a glass of wine.
Overall, the reason I went (for the music) was fulfilled.
Definitely check it out if you are looking to hear some quality, live jazz.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jan 19, 2016
Live Jazz band! SWEET!
- Dark & Smokey spot
- Pricey Drinks
- Not so friendly service from the strange mustache & bearded guy! ( had to waive him down to get a drink )
- The music was Niiiiiiiiiicccccceeeee!
- Full Bar
- Small Plate Menu ( which was never offered )
- Cigars can be purchased
We ended up leaving after my first glass of wine, because I wanted food! I don't know if we came to late to order, but a menu wasn't offered and I felt that we were asked to cash out before we were even comfortable in our seats. ( rushed service )Helpful 17Thanks 0Love this 16Oh no 0 - Mar 26, 2013Updated review
Based on a recent visit, it appears Churchill Grounds no longer allows smoking in their establishment. While that's great for health reasons, it also means the place is significantly more crowded than it used to be. Which results in spottier service, since they tend to keep staff at a minimum.
No matter. I still love to have a drink - or two - here before a show at the Fabulous Fox Theatre.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Apr 12, 2010Previous reviewChurchill Grounds is my favorite place to go before (and after) a show at the Fox. The service is excellent, the lighting is dim, and the drinks are strong. They also pour one of the best pints of Guinness in the city.
And because they allow smoking inside, it's adults only, all the time. I love escaping the crowded throngs on Peachtree and settling in at one of the cozy tables or grabbing a seat at the bar. [Warning: if you are sensitive to cigarette smoke, this place is not for you. Please don't go and cop an attitude; there are plenty of other bars to choose in the area.] - Apr 20, 2015
Churchill Grounds was exactly what I was looking for when I was going to Atlanta. Some fantastic live jazz!
I arrived pretty early. Not many people inside the place and. I live music yet. I asked when should I return. I was told to come back by 9:30. They weren't kidding. Got there at 9:25 and it was the last seats in the house.
The music was amazing and provided with what my ears wanted to hear. Jazz and Blues all night long.
My server was great. Each beer was poured to perfection in the exact glass it was to be poured in. Chalice, mug, tall glass, whatever it was, he poured it and poured it perfectly.
If you're looking for some live music, this is your spot.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Brad T.Fort Myers, FL1104765Oct 22, 2015
My wife and I absolutely loved this little gem of a place next to the Fox Theater in Atlanta. We came on a Wednesday night, and besides the staff and another gentlemen drinking at the bar, we were the only ones in the building.
We were greeted by a super friendly man at the door who took our $10 covers and seated us at a half booth. We were met there by a mustachioed server/bartender/all-around-nice-guy Joshua. He took our drink and appetizer orders and then let us know that the main chef was out that night but that the second chef could "cook a couple things."
A tad skeptical at this, we browsed the menu and found that this quaint little jazz club with all the trappings of a big-city hot spot served Asian food! It was definitely a surprise. We ordered the noodles and chicken, and a curry. They were both delightful!
The highlight of the evening was the band. We had heard a guitarist was playing at that he was really good. Unfortunately (but maybe fortunately), he was injured and had to cancel. The replacement band was a quartet of guys who weren't even old enough to drink...but who absolutely blew that stage apart.
It was a great evening that almost felt like a private show. We really enjoyed Churchill Grounds. We'll be back!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nov 6, 2011
Churchill Grounds is my 'cool card' when it comes to taking friends out. Whenever I'm trying to think of a place to take somebody from out of town, my mind instantly goes straight to Churchhill.
This place offers up some seriously good jazz and has the atmosphere to boot. You don't want to miss this if youre passing through town.
Cover averages $10 with 2 show times & they typically have a 2 drink minimum.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jane D.Atlanta, GA2261Jan 3, 2016
Pros: All that Jazz!!!
Intimate setting.
Cons: Very limited asian food menu (for the cover charge and lack of parking they should at least offer more food choices for those who don't drink or particularly enjoy jazz but are accompanying others who do).
The cover was $15. Per person (we were a party of 2) doorman took 2 $20. bills from us, showed us our $10 in change, quickly ushered us to a crowded bar to seat us and rushed back to the door post without giving us our change. We had to confront him and he acted clueless but finally gave us our money.
The $10. Martini I ordered probably only had a couple drops of alcohol in it.
All in all the $30. cover plus $10. parking, shady doorman, limited Asian Cuisine menu, expensive (Martini) juice made for a discouraging night. I felt I just donated money to you when I actually came for a service.
Churchill, you need to take feedback from your customers and make this ideal place, great!
I won't be back!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jul 3, 2011
I had a great time here the other night in a intimate jazz club with a smooth four-piece group and good (if it at times inattentive) service. We arrived without having eaten so we were thrilled -- and surprised -- to find a 8 or so item Chinese menu. The food was good given the situation, but you should come here for the jazz, not the Chinese food.
We had a nice surprise when local trumpet-player Joe Grandsen (http://www.joegransden.com/) showed up and played a few impromptu numbers with the band. He was very good and really spiced up the show.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Funda Y.Atlanta, GA1757Oct 26, 2014
I'm a fan of jazz and have been to most venues in Atlanta in search for great music. The musicians who play here are indeed top calibre, however the venue and the management are not. Food is not reliably good (or cooked or not burnt) but the service is pretty much always slow. I've been here 3 times so far. The space is VERY small and the entrance door opens into the stage. Your cover money goes to the band and the venue requires you to buy $10-15 minimum of drinks and food. Considering their food, I'd recommend buying drinks... If you don't consume alcohol... sorry. They don't cater to your needs here. The owner also has strange rues: ladies cannot wear clothing that reveal their shoulders and NO DANCING is permitted.
Musicians play all around town and I prefer to catch them at other places rather than this one.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Harene P.South Plainfield, NJ2625Aug 4, 2014
I wish you could give half stars...went here on a Wednesday and had to pay $10 to go in which I hope went to the band. Over priced drinks and mediocre food. Paid $17 for less than stellar food.
The music was okay so I suggest eating and drinking elsewhere and stopping in afterwards.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
