Welcome to Sunset Golf Club

The original Sunset Golf Club was established in the 1930′s at the corner of Cockrell Hill and Davis. Sunset moved to its current location in 1953. It has been owned and operated by three generations of the Mims family.

The Mims family has a long history of golf. C.B. Mims was the architect and PGA professional until he died in 1992 at the age of 75. He played on the tour in the 1940′s and 50′s, and played in the 1941 U.S. Open and many times in the Dallas Open.

C.B.’s sister, Bettye Mims Danoff, also a touring pro, was one of the eleven founders of the L.P.G.A., which was chartered in 1950. Mrs. Danoff beat “Babe” Zaharis at River Crest Country Club in the Texas Women’s Open. She retired touring in the late 1950′s and now resides in Plano, Texas.

How do you choose the right golf club?

Check the Price Tag

The first thing that golfers, both beginners and pros, need to fix is their budget. It is easy to forget your budget and the health of your wallet when you see those shiny clubs at the store!

Ask Other People

A good way to get great recommendations for golf clubs is to ask people. Searching online and other golf-related forums and social media platforms can give you a great idea of what to choose.

Look Past the Brand

One mistake many new golfers make is that they get overawed by the brand and buy something that doesn't perform as well. Try exploring different niche brands - you might score a great golf club.

Get a Feel for the Club

In these days of e-commerce and online shopping sprees, it's quite rare that people actually go to stores to buy something. However, in the case of golf clubs, you need to get a 'feel' for the club before you buy one.

Check the Loft of the Club

It is vital to match the club's loft with your play's style. This might not be as important to people just starting out, but it's good to keep this in mind.

Consider Shaft Length

An important aspect to consider when buying a gold club is the length of the shaft. People are comfortable with different lengths, so you need to find yours.

Things to bring

Golf Balls and Clubs

The first and most obvious thing you must bring are golf clubs and balls. Sunset Golf Club has you covered if this is your first time! We have a great selection of clubs you can rent.

Golf Bag

A golf bag that is roomy enough for your equipment, clothing, and accessories is a vital part of your kit. Keep everything organized and secured so you can find things you want to quickly.

Weather Protection

Something that new golfers forget is how quickly the weather can change. It might be nice and sunny when you leave home, and start to pour as soon as you get to the tee. A light, waterproof jacket can save your day!

Hydration

Hydration is important to your golfing experience, especially on a warm day out. Packing water and an electrolyte drink can keep you hydrated. A quick tip - avoid too much coffee before a session.

Extra Socks and Gloves

It's a good idea to pack some extra socks and gloves in your bag, especially when playing in temperamental weather. Also, bring some rain covers for your golfing shoes.

Pencils and Sharpies

While most of us say we aren't competitive, keeping score is something that we love to do! Pack at least a couple of sharpened pencils to score your round. Sharpies are a great idea to mark your golf balls.
