Hello Lola, and welcome back to the good graces of Stevie B. As you can see in my previous reviews, I went from 5 to 2 stars in my reviews. That is a big drastic change and I commend the management of Lola's for reaching out to me to address my disappointments. They listened, agreed and took action. I will be open and honest with you in saying a portion of my recent visit was covered by a gift card from their management. However, it in no way influenced the upgrade to 4 stars. They re-earned each and everyone of them.
Our visit was with a friend who was leaving St Louis for New York to attend Columbia University, on a full ride scholarship. Damn, I've got some smart friends. To be fair, I introduced myself and let them know I was dining with a management gift card. No surprise here, they knew who I was, thanks to Yelp. Chris was off that night, but happened to be in for a private party and still made time to chat. He reminded me that we meet on my first visit to Lola and that he would look for my new review.
We started off with cocktails and an order of Tempura Fried Calamari with Cajun Aioli. It was served hot and the pieces were huge. The batter was crispy and flavorful. We all favor the tentacles were digging to see who could find the most. I am not a fan of dipping, (except for fries) but I did like the Cajun Aioli and our guest really liked it's kick.
Brad had the Tuna Nicolse, which was seared Ahi Tuna served on fresh green beans, hard boiled egg, Kalamata olives & field greens tossed in Tarragon Vinaigrette. Take note of the picture, the tuna was seared perfectly. I could also see this dish served with salmon, too. We keep fresh tarragon on hand at home so the tarragon vinaigrette was a big hit.
Our guest had the Carmen. Tenderloin, Boursin Cheese & Wild Mushrooms - yum. Topped with fried shallots, (more yum) mixed greens
and balsamic reduction. You really can't go wrong with tenderloin, cheese
and mushrooms. We do recommend getting the balsamic reduction on
the side if possible. That way you have control like you do when getting
salad dressing on the side. On our visit, the balsamic had a heavy pour
and dominated the flavor. The tenderloin is to good to have that happen.
I love mussels and when I see them on a menu I've got to have them. For my meal I enjoyed the Mussels Pernod and a side of Pomme Friets with roasted Garlic Aioli and Red Pepper Ketchup. Next time, I'll make a meal of just the mussels, baguette and a bottle of Pinot Grigio.
They were Prince Edward island Mussels with Pernod, shaved fennel, cherry tomatoes, shallots, garlic & butter. I sometimes judge mussels by the broth, and I could not keep my friends from dipping bread in my bowl of mussels. A few times they almost got jabbed with a fork.
The Pomme Friets proved themselves to be a pleasurable side to the mussels. The Red Pepper Ketchup was a perfect accent. Is it available by the bottle?
The only thing that kept them from regaining the 5 star rating was our finale; their Creme Brûlée. It was over baked and over produced/presented. Make it simple, a good Creme Brûlée can stand on it's flavor alone.
The service was attentive and friendly. They made sure everything was to our satisfaction without making it an overkill.
So in closing, good job Lola. We'll be back.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0Jul 14, 2011Previous reviewLola, what happened to you? I was there last night with a group of seven for Yelp Eats Out and I was totally disappointed in you. As we were leaving we discussed our # of stars and our consensus was 3. As I sit down to write this review, I could not bring myself to give you a 3. There is an old saying, "if it's not broken, don't fix it", Lola you are broken, now fix it.
I'm a simple man when it comes to drinks, give me vodka and I'm happy. However to night you were out of many call brands and finally had to go with a flavored one. That was okay, but how can you be out of three name brand vodkas at the same time?
My meal started out with envy, the Polenta Fries looked way better then my Calamari. The Calamari was served cold, not luke warm, but cold. It was also flavorless. The sauce provided for dipping had a nice kick to it, just wish my Calamari was warm.
My main entree was the Cajun Chicken breast. The Chicken breast was sliced into four slices that were seasoned/blackened very well. The meat was also moist and tender. However, the red beans and rice were a sad mess. Those reading this review, look at the picture I posted and ask yourself, would you serve this to a guest? I've had better red beans and rice at a chain chicken joint.
Now for the Blueberry Bread Pudding, it was a total disappointment.
I have never experienced a drier bread pudding then yours. We were actually thumping the top of it with our spoons and it sounded as if we were knocking on the front door of a friends house. As Miss Stephanie said, "even more blueberry sauce could not help this pudding".
Lola, what happened? My first review was a 5 and now you are getting a 2 and a place on my No-No List. I can understand one out of my three items being off, but tonight you struck out.
I'll end on a positive note, our server was cute and charming.Feb 21, 2011Previous reviewWhen: February 20
Why: Brunch
I am glad I ignored some of the Yelp reviews and went to experience Lola for myself. It was totally amazing
Sunday Brunch without a Bloody Mary is unheard of in my book and the Bloody Mary's at Lola are the absolute best. I have always thought the Bloody Mary's at RL in Chicago were the best, I now know that they at Lola's.
They offer three levels, Mild - 3 Olive Tomato Vodka, Medium - Absolut Peppar Vodka, Hot - Habanero Infused Absolut Vodka. Combined with their in house BM mix, make them the best. An added bonus is you can buy them by the pitcher and save $.
We ordered the Smoked Salmon Benedict, which was very flavorful. The eggs were done perfectly and the Salmon gave a new twist to a traditional brunch dish. What was nice, you get two so it was easy to share. We also ordered a side of Roasted Potatoes, that were sliced in large pieces and cooked to perfection.
Our second entree was the Savory Creole Breakfast Bread Pudding. No need to go to New Orleans, you've got an authentic creole dish here in downtown St. Louis. Again the portion was large enough for two to share. Before heading down to Soulard for Mardi Gras, stop by here for brunch and have this dish to kick off the celebration.
We were so impressed with our main entrees we had to experience something sweet so we ordered one of the Banana Sweet Crepes. Chocolate, Bananas, whipped cream and strawberries.....YUMMY.
Our server Ava was fantastic. In fact the entire staff was friendly and strived to make our visit enjoyable. This may very well be our new place for Sunday Brunch. We are now planning our second visit to experience dinner. I gotta try that Lobster Dog. - May 26, 2011
I met her in a club down in old St. Lou',
where you eat your brunch while the band plays a few:
Rolla, Reggae-Jazz-Funk, Roll-a.
She walked up to us and asked what to roast.
We said, "American Breakfast, please hold the toast,"
Lola, L-O-L-A, Lola, La-la-la-lah Lola.
Well, we drank mimosas 'longside java brew.
After a sleepless night, we needed a few,
oh my Lola
La-la-la-la Lola,
La-la-la-la Lola.
Well, I'm not the world's most dessert-kind of guy,
But the waffles and cream were light enough to fly ...
away with Lola,
La-la-la-la Lola,
La-la-la-la Lola.

BRUNCH REVIEW:
Holy fried chicken & waffles Batman!
Came in for some brunch on the weekend and the place had a great vibe. The live music onstage (a guitar player/singer & a flute player) was nice and comforting and just the right volume. And it was cool to see a guy rock the hell out of a flute.
I went for the chicken & waffle. At $12, it seemed a bit pricey. The food took a tad too long to come out. But when it did...oh my it looked incredible (see pic). A LARGE boneless breast of chicken, golden fried sitting atop a big syruped Belgian waffle. And the taste -- amazing! -- exactly the perfect combination of salty/sweet/crispy that you'd want. Seriously, it was perfection. And since it was so big, I had plenty to take home for leftovers.
Brunch at Lola -- just do it.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Jan 7, 2011Previous reviewThe pomegranate duck dish ($20) is not all that. The duck was OK, the rice was oversalted, and my asparagus was old and wilted. Not worth it.
However, the calamari, pomme frites, Athena crepe and lamb lollipop dish were great. Their salad with bacon dressing was very bacon-y indeed.
Not very crowded on a Wednesday around 8pm. We were dining with another couple, and the server split our checks without us asking. I thought it was cool that he cared enough to track the food and drinks for each couple. That's how you earn a good tip.
And we capped off the night with dollar absinthes while listening to some great music in the Absinthe Lounge. I highly suggest getting the citrus absinthe. It's just much smoother & more palatable than the original (fennel), but not overly flavored.Nov 15, 2010Previous review$1 Absinthe drinks on Wednesdays!
Let's rewind. Lola has expanded its space and now includes an awesome bar/lounge area called the Absinthe Bar. There's a cozy little bar, two comfortable white pleather couches to sit on, as well as high-top tables. The lighting is dim and the DJ is playing great music along the lines of Massive Attack at the perfect volume. There are very cool absinthe-related murals on the walls. It's just a beautiful space.
There weren't many people there on Wednesday night around 10pm, so we were able to nab a couch and enjoy our absinthe. We went the traditional method, where they light the sugar on fire and let it dissolve in the glass. It was pretty smooth and delicious. The drink normally costs $7, but if you go on Wednesday, it's just 1 dollar! There's also a large selection of creative absinthe cocktails and martinis.
Before hitting the Absinthe Bar, I had some dinner. They were out of the pomegranate duck dish, so I went for the famous lobster corn dog & mac n cheese ($17). Everyone needs to try the lobster corn dog at least once. I think it's just a lobster tail fried in cornmeal batter, served with a cocktail dip & a butter dip. It is heaven on a stick. The mac n cheese was decent but came out scaldingly hot. Even after waiting 10 minutes, it was still very hot. Also got an order of snails n tails ($9). It's not a lot of food but damn is it tasty (make sure to squeeze the lemon on it!).
I was a fan of Lola before the Absinthe Bar, but now I'm officially in love with her. Great spot for a date or for a group. Open till 3am everyday! Between the food, drinks, music, and overall atmosphere, I would say this is the coolest place in St Louis.Apr 11, 2010Previous reviewSo I've been here 3 times now, once for brunch, once for dinner, and once for late-night.
Brunch was my first visit, and it was pretty killer. I really like the idea of omelet-stuffed crepes, and mine was solid, as were the strawberry waffles. The atmosphere was also really cool and I love the design aesthetic of this place. At that time there was no live music, although I know there often is.
Dinner was also nice. I got the fish n chips and it was served in a metallic cone-like thing. Pretty darn good. Also got a chance to try the herbed polenta fries, which are actually 4 giant fries served w/ ratatouile. Tasty. Everyone else seemed pretty happy with their dishes. Only problem is that the portions aren't huge so you probably have to order a couple things to feel full, which can get pricey. I'd say come here if you want to eat light, otherwise eat something at home beforehand.
Then I came on a Saturday night around 11pm. A cool house music/live band hybrid was playing. There were a good amount of people there, although most were around the bar and the perimeter, so tables were still available. Crowd was diverse which was cool, probably all in mid-20s to mid-30s ish. I got a couple Printers (bourbon & ginger beer) and they were tasty. Occasionally people would dance in front of the stage, or off to the side, but this is definitely not a dance club. Overall it was a cool fun vibe and definitely worth checking out with a group of people, especially since it was free to get in.
Their website is great so definitely check that out. I like to leave it open in the background just to listen to the music. - Jul 13, 2011
I'm very "middle of the road" on Lola. It's just okay for me, and tonight's Yelp Eats experience was just that.
Myself, Stephanie, Travis, Browning, Steven, John and Joselyn all got together for dinner tonight and were sat right away just up the stairs! Cocktails came out first and I just ordered a Captain & ginger ale with lime... felt like keeping it simple today. Something weird was up with this drink! It tasted almost musty. Just kinda blah. Guess I should've ordered something off their extensive specialty drink menu...
The polenta fries were yummmmm-y! So good. I wasn't crazy about the two sauces that were served with it, but these things were delicious and gone so fast. One order should be enough for two people, fyi... I was just overly hungry.
The Spanakopita (portabella stuffed with spinach, feta, and other goodness) was served on top of what I think was a piece of toast, alongside some fresh vegetables. I had a hard time actually finding the mushroom, and the whole thing was almost too salty for me to eat! My poor kidneys were saying "pleeeeease no more salt." I could only eat less than half. I'll let Stephanie S review the bread pudding we had at the end of the meal. Let's just say it was more bread than pudding...
It was hard to hear each other talk because the live jazz music was pretty overwhelming. We were so glad when they took a break because we could actually have a conversation for a few minutes! it was a good dinner, but I'm not sure I'll be hurrying back.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Pizza K.Saint Charles, MO10888309Mar 4, 2011Updated review
On my last visit I went for Saturday brunch with a waffle craving. I was not disappointed!!! I ordered the Elvis waffle and it was gooey goodness. It starts with a waffle, then they coat the waffle with melt-y peanut butter, top that with bananas, syrup, bacon and a little cream and you have heaven on earth! This was so rich I am glad that I was splitting it with Mike O. who ordered the Savory Creole Breakfast Bread Pudding. Since we ended up sharing it was the perfect amount of sweet and salty. The breakfast bread pudding was just as amazing as the waffle. The gravy and crawfish went so well with the bread pudding. I want to try the crepes, but it will be hard not to order the Elvis again.
For my beverage I got the Medium Bloody Mary made with house mix and pepper vodka. I wanted to try the Hot, but I didn't want it to be too spicy. I don't mess around with habaneros, I've felt that burn. Mike O. ordered the beermosa and it was better than I thought it could be. Beer plus OJ sounds weird, but it went really well together. Next time, if we can agree, I'd like to order a pitcher of our chosen beverage.
The service was good and our server was also the bartender. It took forever to get our food. So our server bought us a round of drinks. I thought that was the perfect touch and I appreciated her kindness. Once we got the food I was a happy camper.
My only complaint about our brunch was the people taking down a speaker from the ceiling while we were eating about 20 feet away from our table. A contraption they were using was noisy and annoying. It was hard to keep the conversation because I kept looking at what they were doing when it got noisy. The contraption was bent so the guy got mad and was hammering on it. I kind of wanted to use the hammer myself. Good thing we were finishing our meal.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0Jan 20, 2011Previous reviewSo I had my birthday dinner at Lola a couple Saturday nights ago. Lola was nice enough to take a reservation for 14 of us which fluctuated a bit, but they were more than happy to accommodate. I arrived early and the table was ready so we were seated and our server got our first round of drinks. The service was great all night. Our server made good recommendations regarding drinks and their drink menu is huge! I had a hard time deciding on a drink so I got a boring 'ol gin and tonic. My friend was adventurous and ordered an Absinthe drink, she didn't like it so she gave it to me. Yay! It was good, but uber expensive so I'm not sure I would order one myself unless it's a Wednesday night which they offer in the Absinthe bar area Absinthe drinks for $1!!! My other friends let me try their drinks and they were all good! The Morgan Linen-Medium Bloody Mary was good. I ordered The Marquette and it was so yummy. I really want to go back and try The Jackson Thompson Square, cucumber gin and cucumber juice! Whoa, sounds like it tastes fresh and cool and perfect for summer.
Once everyone finally made their selections our server put in our order and the food came out pretty quickly. My food was good. I ordered the Lola burger, its a lamb burger with olive spread, feta and tomato served with pomme friettes, but the pomme friettes were cold. It's my birthday and I want warm fries, damn it! That aside my food tasted good and I would go back again. We split the Blueberry Duck Sliders with the table and they were good, maybe a little too sweet or too much sauce. Everyone else seemed to like their food as well. I wanted to taste everything, but the table was too long which made that impossible.
Some of my issues with Lola are that they do not split checks (I understand, it's a giant pain with a large group), they don't take more than one card per table (ATM in house, BUT it charges you $3.60 (I think) and then your bank charges you on top of that...not cool) and none of this was never mentioned to me while I was emailing back and forth with Chris or when I made the reservation by phone or when Lola called to confirm my reservation. I didn't see this info on the website either. It would have been nice had it been mentioned beforehand so I could warn my friends and family that this is the case. Had it not been for our awesome server I'm might have been super pissed. I was also a little disappointed that the manager didn't come out and see how we were and how our experience was. Maybe I expected too much... - Abby S.Denver, CO365425217149Mar 30, 2010Updated review
Went back to Lola for a second helping and it was still really, really good!
My recommendation? Try the Delilah crepe. And the pommes frites!
You won't regret it!Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Feb 19, 2010Previous reviewHave been to Lola twice in the past week and I'm officially a fan! The first time I came here, it was just for drinks. They have an extensive cocktail menu, plus some pretty tasty Pinot Noir for less than $10 a glass. Done!
Came back yesterday for a weekday brunch with a gal pal and we enjoyed a gluttonous meal of mimosas, crepes, pommes frites and cheesecake. We were both moaning and groaning with satisfaction throughout the meal. Seriously, how could anyone NOT like that on a Thursday before noon?
Come here for lunch or a late night snack and you won't be disappointed! Can't wait to go back soon! - 20147204Nov 30, 2011
I don't normally write reviews, but I was so disappointed that I felt it was my civic duty to warn people not to eat at this place. I'm not at all surprised that so many others had the same idea in mind.
I have a $40 RFT voucher for this place, but I was heading in pretty late last night for the (really awesome and fun) Steampunk Social, Gaslight Squared, so I figured I'd save it for a night I could arrive earlier and try more courses. I was still hungry, though, so I ordered the chicken, feta, and spinach crepe without red peppers. I think it was called Mahdeva or something.
When it finally came out, the french fries were cold and soggy. The chicken in the crepe was as tough as shoe leather--I considered spitting out every piece, but stuck with it, figuring I paid $10.50 plus tax for that sucker, and I needed to eat. I couldn't believe how difficult it was to chew that stuff. It was otherwise fairly bland. Maybe I should have gotten the peppers.
I had ordered water, but I never received a refill on it. No one came by to ask how the food was, either. What gives? For food that expensive, I was hoping for something more. It doesn't help that I'm sad that Crepes in the City closed--it was by far my favorite restaurant in the city, though that has little to do with Lola other than to make me sad about how far it's fallen.
They get one star for hosting our steampunk stuff. I sure hope the drinks aren't gross and watered down as everyone says they are here on Yelp when I go back next month for the next steampunk event....at least I'll be using my voucher for them :(Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Danielle K,
My name is Matt, and I am the General Manager at Lola. I am sorry to hear that you had an unpleasant dining experience the other evening. Gaslight night is usually more of a bar night, so we don't usually have full service late night during the event. Please give Lola another chance, as our food usually gets rave reviews. I would like to offer a dinner on us to make up for your last visit. Please email me at matt@welovelola.com, and I will set up a very nice table with excellent service for you.
Sincerest Apologies,
Matt M - 231690320Jun 23, 2012
I can't even remember how many times I've been here, brunch, dinner and night for the club.
3 words: Chicken and Waffles. Extra sweet syrup, which is an upside for me. Maybe infused with orange? I seriously wanted to know what blood sugar was afterwards.
CRISPY and fluffy waffles. I just realized how much I use "fluffy" in my reviews. Well, obligatory - "It's SO fluffy!!". And the waffle had to have corn meal in it, which made it even more awesome in my book. The syrup was perfect for dipping the chicken in.
Crunchy chicken breast, but so moist inside! And yes, I did ask for ketchup!
The brunch, I can't remember exactly what I ordered, but I loved it.
And the club experience, lovely. What makes a club for me often is the atmosphere and the clientele, besides the obvious necessity of good music. Intelligent people, not too many (drunk) women humping the floor begging for male attention, and good music is what you can look forward to, at least on Saturdays. And to be specific, good music is old-school (90s) r&b and rap and the current hits. If I was single, this is where I come to find suitable suitors. And, it's not divided on color lines, or age lines, really, either. Of course, depending on the act(s) that night, things might be different. And, at night, their food is still delicious as usual. Drinks are also priced reasonably.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 9127256Sep 9, 2013
I just went to Lola yesterday for the third time for brunch. I absolutely love their brunch!
The actual space is cool - kind of open and comfy at the same time.
We've always had great service and the food is SO good. We have trouble choosing our meals because it all sounds so good - and it is! The omelette stuffed crepes have to be my favorites though. Their mimosas and Bloody Mary's aren't too bad either!
We have had great service every time we've been there. There was live music yesterday - just a guy playing a keyboard, but it was nice background music while we ate and chatted. I've heard the music can be too loud, but we haven't been there when it was.
I haven't been there for dinner, but after seeing the menu, I plan to!
I recommend you check this place out for brunch on a Sunday morning!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Andy W.Olympia, WA13715068Apr 28, 2010
Saw a Facebook message about Javier Mendoza playing last night. And since I'd been looking for an excuse to try Lola anyway...
The crowd was thin but I enjoyed the music and my meal was excellent. At my server's recommendation I ordered a "The Printer's" - Maker's Mark & ginger beer. Nice & spicy, fresh. They had jerk lamb chops on special. Attractive presentation & nice contrasting but complimentary flavors and colors; went great with a glass of Solitute Cotes du Rhone. Feeling gluttonous, or maybe just into the music & vibe and not wanting it to end, I ordered a cheese platter. The lamb would have been a sufficient portion as a meal, so the cheese was overdoing it but it looked so appealing and just invited me to savor every last crumb. The figs were a nice, and unexpected, touch. Finished with an espresso. Thanks for the zest.
Only one point if criticism, and I'm sorry but it bears mentioning. My wine glass was chipped. It was on the base, so I dismissed it. Then my espresso cup came out chipped, too, and this one on the rim - neither sanitary nor safe. And it's not like they were busy, so either 50% of the glassware in the house is chipped or someone was just not paying attention.
The music hooked me, the food impressed me, the attention to detail needs more focus.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
