This was quite possibly one of the worst massages I've ever had, which is quite unfortunate since everyone who worked at Knead was beyond professional. They were so nice that it just made me want to return (well almost). My 90 minute massage was not a massage technically, but someone gently touching my skin with hot stones. It was perhaps the gentlest massage I've ever had (and that's not a good thing). The knots in my back were screaming out for more pressure. Clearly others have had much better experiences so check it out for yourself. Warning- knead is located right in the midst of sweat gym and every dropped barbell is clearly audible. I don't mind not having a total zen spa experience but you might...

I understand everyone's complaints about the scheduling with groupons. I get it. I understand that some people can't relax with the sounds of the gym faintly going on in the background.
But this place consistantly provides me with good solid massages. Not the kind that are like a bubble bath... relaxing and calm.... I'm talking about actually getting knots out of my muscles. Muscles I didn't even know could have knots!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Caren C.Philadelphia, PA216Oct 31, 2010
Michelle is amazing! She goes the extra mile to make the customer feel welcome, comfortable and deliver a great service. Michelle will concentrate in those extra tight areas and make sure you leave rejuvinated.
The foot scrub will cure the roughest soles and the option to bring your own music really personliazes the experience. Michelle is able to give you the exact amount of pressure and can make you scream if you like it really deep, but honestly, I couldn't handle it, so she gives the perfect amount of pressure to loosen up my extra tight shoulders.
If you are looking for a Botique, unpretentious, cozy experience you should give it a try . . . though, it is addictive, but the reasonably priced services will keep you coming back without breaking the bank!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Stacy O.Brick Township, NJ612Apr 30, 2012
Ahh, massage.
The oils, the dim room, and the relaxing sounds of blaring techno music and free weights slamming on the floor.
Where do I even begin?
I purchased a groupon for body scrub and massage, a two hour service in total. I arrived at 10am for my 10:15 appointment only to be told I didn't have an appointment. I had written the time and date on the groupon and insisted the receptionist go through her "book" where she eventually found my name and phone number with the date of my appointment. However, she informed there was no service written next to my name so in her mind, I didn't have an appointment. She couldn't answer my logical question as to what on earth my information would be doing in her book unless I indeed had an appointment, so she eventually called the owner.
While I waited, the woman next to me waiting for her 10am massage was still waiting at 10:40. She was told her massage therapist was "at a meeting with the Eagles head coach" and no one knew for sure when she would return. They lady amusingly stated that now she had one more reason to hate Andy Reid for infringing on her massage time, and she ended up walking out.
When the owner finally arrived at 11am, I think her name was Michelle, I started my massage. To be fair, it was a good massage, however all I could focus on was the blaring "club" music from the gym the massage area is located in. That heavy bass, peppered with slamming free weights from men in the gym lifting more then then can handle, left much to be desired from my "relaxing" spa day.
I paid for a two hour service and left with a one hour massage and a headache. Clearly this place "kneads" to be better organized.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Kristin S.Ridley Park, PA18222Aug 15, 2012
Like many reviewers who came before me, I'm rating this place one-star based on the customer service, and not an actual massage (because I didn't get one).
I purchased a Groupon for a 60-minute massage back in February, but haven't been able to get in touch with Knead to actually schedule an appointment. Because the Groupon expires on August 22nd, I began calling in earnest last week.
On Monday, I called several times throughout the day, repeatedly got the answering machine, and finally left a message with my name and phone number. I continued to call at least once per day for the next five days, and never got a real person on the phone. In the meantime, I also visited the website and filled out the "contact us" form on Tuesday.
By Friday afternoon, I still hadn't heard back from Knead - so I called Groupon to complain. The customer service rep said that she would contact the business, and that I should receive a call from them within three business days. Lo and behold, FIVE business days have gone by (according to the website, Knead is open on weekends), and still no call. I called Groupon again today, and was promptly given a refund.
Five stars to Groupon?Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Suzanne L.Washington, DC98201Aug 17, 2012
This place is awful. You shouldn't contract with Groupon if you are going to make your business completely unreachable in the month before the discount expires. That is a waste of people's money and people's time, and completely disrespectful. I've tried calling multiple times, leaving a message, emailing them through their website, etc. -- all to no avail.
What's worse, since I bought my Groupon from someone else, I am not even able to get a refund.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Xtine H.Philadelphia, PA551364Sep 13, 2011
I had an appointment here after purchasing a deal from Groupon or buy with me or some such, and it ended up being really great!
The masseuse asked about the pressure-to which I replied "the heavier the better" and she did not fail to accommodate that.
I am not the hugest fan of oils being used in massage as I feel I "squick" all the way home. This was compensated for by the application of warm moist towels to remove the extra, and even afterwards, my skin felt moisturized, so that was great.
All the massages include a foot scrub, it was incorporated to the massage.
I would definitely go back again!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Nupur D.West Chester, PA7311May 23, 2012
By far the worst ever. They definitely try to service you when you first walk into the door but the actual service itself is not even worth $10 dollars.
1. You can never get anyone on the phone.
2. They advertise things that are "already part of the package" and make it seem like it's something additional. I got a body wrap and a foot scrub. She put the scrub on my entire body, as you are supposed to do with a body wrap and when I asked about the foot scrub, she said she did that with the wrap. So no additional service at all.
3. She doesn't even know how to make you feel comfortable, I was miserable the entire time because she was so rough taking off the scrub, not relaxing at all.
4. THERE WAS NO WRAP, she just covered me in a blanket, with no heat or anything.
By far the biggest waste of my money, never go here, it's not worth it at all.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Amanda F.Philadelphia, PA06Feb 21, 2014
I really hope that if people are considering spending money at this place, that they read these reviews first. I did NOT read reviews before I bought a groupon for a massage and wrap. After reading reviews I really tried to go in with an open mind and with the hope that my experience would be different. It wasn't.
First...I didn't have the scheduling issues that most seem to have. Sure, it's SUPER ANNOYING that they don't answer the phone...why bother having one? And I think it's a little off-putting to say on your voicemail "don't leave a voicemail" but, still, I had no real problems scheduling my appointment over email.
Second...this place is in the middle of a gym. Yeah....a loud gym (which I didn't know when I bought my groupon). The only thing that seems to separate the gym from the "boutique" is a thin layer of dry wall. My appointment was around 4:30 so, while it started relatively quite, it quickly became loud when people started coming after work. I could hear everyones conversations and the dropping of weights. Not at ALL relaxing. I didn't think the gym noises would bother me. I love to relax while I'm getting massages but, honestly, I'm more focused on the fact that my back needs to be worked on so, if I can't completely relax, I'm usually okay with it. But, this experience was just so all over the place and really distracting. I couldn't unwind AT ALL.
Which brings me to the actual massage/wrap. It just wasn't good. The wrap was a body scrub and then they wrapped me in, basically, tin foil. The wrap never got HOT. It was warm but, not the heat I expected. I sat there for, what felt like, 15 minutes then I had to go to the showers (in the gym) to wash it off. That was incredibly awkward!!! All these people are here to work out and here I am walking around in a robe. Weird. Then came the massage. Over all, it was not enjoyable. Renee was pleasant but, I felt she was allllll over the place with her techniques. Started with my arms...moved to my legs....back to my neck...oh wait, I forgot something, let me go back to your arms. Not relaxing. Not enjoyable.
And the final thing that made me mad...my groupon was for an hour and a half massage and an hour wrap. That's 2.5 hours of service alone. Forget the time spent with the chatting, the shower and yadda yadda. I was in and out the door in 2 hours!!! I got INSANELY jipped on time. The only reason I didn't complain was because I wasn't enjoying myself so, I kinda wanted to leave.
So, there you have it. Another reason to NOT check this place outHelpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Eva U.Philadelphia, PA0553Jun 20, 2014
The massage therapist at Knead is a real pro. My body wrap was bliss, from scrub to rub to muddy seaweed steep. I emerged from my kelp cocoon stressless and a couple of inches slimmer.
The cons? Getting someone on the phone to schedule was a challenge, and there's only one therapist. The biggest downside was having to walk in a little robe from the massage studio through a co-ed gym to the shared gym showers to rinse off. Public toilets and leering gym bros are the opposite of zen.
If Knead moved to a new studio, I'd be back in a heartbeat.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
