Live, love, pedal boat!
Avoid the phone and email hassles mentioned in some of the previous Yelp reviews by making a quick and easy credit card reservation at http://laboatrental.com/. Click the "Schedule Your Appointment NOW!" button at the top right of the page to get started, select "Hydrobike" for the pedal boats option (or "Sea Doo 2012" for jet skis), and follow the steps to complete your booking. Make sure to check off the "I would like to pay at the time of service" box so that you won't be charged right away.
If you have a social deal, look for the "Voucher Code" box near the bottom of the page where you're asked to enter in your personal information and again, be sure to click "I would like to pay at the time of service" so that you don't get charged full price.
Then, pedal boat, struggle, laugh! There's no quicker way to feel like a poor relation than to be the only pedal boat going one to two miles an hour in King Harbor. Even the sea lions made fun of us! The water was so choppy from all of the Redondo Beach yacht, sail and jet ski activity going on that we initially worried the two hours we booked would feel like four, but they say a body can get used to almost anything. Before long, we found ourselves having a great time!
The pier staff were on point, helpful and friendly, and it was such a beautiful day when we headed out. We enjoyed the water and the breeze. We got some sun. We saw, smelled (X_X), and hung out with many yappy, happy sea lions. And sometimes we just let our pedal boat float where it wanted to go whenever we got bumped by waves from bigger vehicles passing by.
Having drifted away quite a bit by the time we needed to get back, we had to pedal like mad to return to our starting point. Dewy skin, aching calves, a half mile's walk back to our car - and LUNCH! - were the rewards for our final effort.
A-OK for an eco-friendlier experience on the water! We may come back to LA Boat Rentals to try out their jet skis some time, but we'll definitely wait until we can get back to Ontario Place in Toronto later to do our pedal boating on calmer waters.Helpful 8Thanks 0Love this 8Oh no 0 - Vicky H.New Orleans, LA126160Sep 2, 2013
Was in LA for the holiday weekend and found this GEM in the area! Despite the low ratings on Yelp, I absolutely enjoyed my experiences. I would have to agree with many recent reviewers and give LA Boat Rentals a 5-star!
It was a beautiful day in the South Bay, so my travel companion and I decided to check out the beach and do something other than just sunbathing! Because of the low Yelp rating, I was a bit worried so I actually called ahead of time. I got to talk to a person on my first attempt at calling and she was able to answer all the general questions I had. We arrived at the location without any issues and the staff at the LA Boat Rentals were wonderful! They are knowledgeable and friendly... always willing to help and answer questions. The jet skis are in great condition... we had a fabulous time on the Pacific Ocean!
I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for some fun in the sun! I definitely will visit LA Boat Rental again in the future (if I'm back in the area). Oh, did I mention that they helped rescue a baby seal :-)Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 188325147Aug 27, 2012
Ugh, don't bother!
I really wish I had looked at the Yelp reviews before purchasing the Living Social deal. They never pick up the phone. When we called, we got an answering machine. No one ever called us back. Some customers outside were complaining that they had even stopped by in the past to try and make a reservation in person, but they were always closed. On top of that, you still have to pay $5 to park your car out at the entrance (near Joe's Crab Shack) and walk all the way down the wharf to the back of the Portofino Hotel only to find out that they're closed.
This weekend we finally got our pedal boat. After about 15 minutes of constant pedaling, we got as far as the entrance of the harbor. My husband & I are both very athletic too -- so I'm convinced that our boat was a dog. Save your money. Don't go here!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Richard A.Rosemead, CA1192125Aug 27, 2012
Let me start by saying this business doesn't even deserve the 1 star I'm being forced to give it. Everything I went through, all because I didn't check the yelp first. I hope this helps save a lot of headaches.
So I needed a boat, I needed one bad. My family was coming over from Kentucky for summer and they had been talking about jet skiing for the past several months. I wanted to give them an amazing experience they'd never forget, so I looked for the closest boat rental place and gave them a call.
I tried calling, but the woman over the phone didn't really know what she was talking about so I decided to just go in person. I walked into LA Boat Rentals and after a 30 minute game of hide and seek with the guy who works there, I was finally able to get him to help me.
We got straight to business. price talk, time talk, and all that good stuff. He was really rude but I didn't mind at the time since I realize we all have our bad days (after reading a couple of these reviews I'm now assuming it isn't a bad day he was having, more a bad year) So we set the date and I left.
A couple of months later my family flew over. We were all so excited about jet skiing we got to LA Boat Rentals an hour early. Even though they were supposed to be open the door was locked and nobody was answering the phone. We waited 30 more minutes and FINALLY a woman opened the door. I asked her if she heard us knocking or calling and she just shrugged in a "I could not give a crap about you" manner.
Anyway, I showed her my paper work that they gave me, the proof that I rented the boat. She looked at it and tells me, "I'm sorry that's really weird, obviously you did rent the boat, but they've all been rented out already. I guess somebody accidentally overbooked." I was pissed off at this point, it was my family's last day here in California and we didn't have a damn boat!
I really let her have it, I called the manager and let him have it, but there was nothing I could do to get a boat. My family flew back to Kentucky without the amazing experience I wanted them to have. I wasn't able to get a refund from this shady company, but they did give me an insulting "5% off my next boating experience" coupon.
I was stuck with a boat a week later when it was available. I took it and I got drunk at sea for a couple of hours. It was nice but I was now drunk and pissed off at them so I took a shit on the deck and returned it that way. I don't care if they charge me extra for having to clean it up, the satisfaction alone was way worth it.
Would I go here again? HELLNO! They are the worst business I have ever dealt with in my entire life.Helpful 8Thanks 0Love this 15Oh no 0 - Phillip Y.Palos Verdes Estates, CA322427Jun 19, 2012
THIS COMPANY IS A JOKE! DO NOT DO PATRON THIS BUSINESS.
I purchased a Living Social voucher for one hour of jet ski rentals, just to see what it's like to ride a jet ski. Realizing that there would likely be many folks booking rentals, I tried calling three separate times. The first two times I was told that they would leave a message with 'Corporate' to return my call. Yet each time, I never received a response.
On the third attempt, I just asked the person that I was connected to, to look up availability. I was given three options, only to be told upon selecting a date that they didn't have enough jet skis available for 'voucher' rentals.
As reported by many others, their reservation process sucks. But even worse, they do not honor their special offers. If you're going to limit the number of jet skis available at one time for 'voucher' rentals, they should indicate so in the fine print.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jensen L.Los Angeles, CA516621Nov 28, 2012
Terrible customer service. A customer should not have to work this hard just to get some information and make reservations.
I had purchased a Groupon for jet ski rentals and made multiple attempts at contacting LA Boat Rentals for reservations. Phone calls were sent straight to voicemail. Emails were rarely answered. There was a point where I finally got a hold of the company through email and right when I got to picking a date for a reservation, the email correspondences came to a halt. I asked Groupon about the matter and they had attempted to contact LA Boat Rentals with no success. I ended up requesting a refund on the deal.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jennifer Y.Alhambra, CA127246105Sep 29, 2012
This place is a joke. I purchased a Groupon deal for 2 jet-ski rentals. When I tried calling to make a reservation, it was impossible because no one ever answers their phone, I left messages but still, nothing. It's quite disappointing because my boyfriend and I love jet-skiing and wanted to do so one last time before summer was over. Not to mention the site is also a joke.
I requested a refund for this deal, Groupon was understanding and refunded my money almost right away. I don't understand why merchants even bother with Groupon or Living Social when they are not going to take it seriously. With coupon or not, customers are customers. You have to do it right the first time in order to get return customers.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Katie L.Wellington, FL27860722Aug 14, 2012
I had no problems making a reservation, but I had a groupon for the Pedal Boat, not Jet Skiis.
Parking is a pain. The confirmation e-mail they send states that there is parking at the Harbor and at Joe's Crab Shack for $5, however when we got to Joe's the charge was $10. Misleading...
The guy at the stand is not friendly but that's fine by me. He got the job done and I don't need my booty kissed. He did his job correctly and I can't complain.
What I can complain about is the Pedal Boats. They were absolutely awful. They were the biggest piece of crap I have ever used. The pedaling does nothing for the momentum of the boat. It seems like Fisher-Price made the damn thing. We had 2 hours to use the boat but after floating around for 30 minutes and then trying with all our strength to get back to the dock, we were done after an hour. A couple that started before us was done after 15 minutes... if that says anything about the quality.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Joanna S.Temple City, CA100425Jul 16, 2012
I felt extremely compelled to write a review for this place in an attempt to salvage the ratings of this sad business.
So I was one of them hundreds of Groupon voucher holders and believe me, after reading all the horrendous reviews I was pretty wary. But I missed jet skiing, really wanted to take my boyfriend out for his birthday, and also because you know, I live life on the edge.
So I bought the groupon. After reading about all the difficulties in placing reservations I figured, I'd call them a bunch of times and if they didn't pick up I'd ask groupon for my money back. Nbd. My first call led me to the LA Boat Rentals voicemail so I left a message with all the details they requested and waited for a call back. I didn't receive one the next day and I was rather impatient so I called back again and lo and behold someone picked up. Though she didn't exactly have a wonderful attitude, I placed my reservation and everything went through extremely smoothly. Thing is, i didn't even have to tell her I had a groupon. She immediately asked for my groupon barcode number.
Maybe I got lucky, maybe I was calling a different number than everyone else? (I called the one on the Groupon website) But reservations were a breeze. If it helps, I called on a Monday at around 4PM.
I received a confirmation email minutes after placing the reservation with her. And two days later, someone calls back to respond to the voicemail that I left! So far, customer service has been not bad at all.
I received one confirmation invoice afterwards, and then another email reminder about my reservation 2 days before the actual date. Still, I was a bit anxious because of all those reviews about suddenly not having jet skis even though a reservation was placed. So I made sure to get there 30 minutes before so they wouldn't even dare call me.
It took a while to process everything and sign the waivers and what not and on top of that we waited another half an hour for the seadoos to come back (appointment at 2) so we didn't get out into the ocean until 2:30. But they still gave us our allotted 1 hour. Thing was, yes there were still Seadoos out on the dock. We were just waiting for the voucher ones to return.
The overall experience? Amazing, no speed limit once you get outside the bay? Catching glimpses of sea otters? Best summer activity ever.
Sorry this review is so incredibly long, but I promise it's ending! Here are points that I felt I needed to address.
1. For all those who said they didn't have seadoos for vouchers but had them for full price reservation, it makes sense. Half their jet skis are reserved for voucher only and the other half is for people who come in on a walk-in basis and are paying full price. As a running business, it makes sense as you wouldn't want to block out your entire summer for simply voucher holders and reject every person who doesn't have one. But yes, it should have been in the fine print to make a reservation as early as possible.
2. Yeah, it's run by twenty something year olds so it's not exactly as efficient as can be, hence the 30 minute wait.
3. Would I go again? Yeah, in a heartbeat.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - MacchiatO Z.Los Angeles, CA14234Jun 30, 2012
Went try it once through the online reservation page in their website, everything went smooth and great, no long wait no extra charge in my AMEX whatsoever.
But when I`m trying to use the GROUPON deal, its a pain in the ass...i bought this coupon about 2 months ago, i called them a million times a day and finally when some1 answer me, he told me there`s no jetSki available..REALLY? ON MONDAY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MONTH AT AROUND 11-4 U HAVE NO JETSKI AT ALL? If you trying to lie to ur customer at least your your shallow brain to make something up.
Until now i still not able to get a hold of anyone in the reservation line and I`m planning to dispute this coupon to groupon since many people had experience the same problem like me.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
