O-M-G, got a killer last minute shampoo and blowout for a wedding I had to attend for way cheap. Nicole was amazing and accomodated my time constraints. I actually plan on coming back for a basic cut with her.
FYI, the new location is by Santa Teresa & Snell in the Tony & Alba's plaza, not the Nob Hill Side. Also, a lot of people go to Mindy's but I've been told that she is no longer here. Big plus? They are open on Sundays. :)
10/16--Came back for a last minute cut to fix a horrible one I had elsewhere. Nicole did everything just the way I wanted and spent a lot of time on blowdrying and styling my hair afterwards. My hair looks awesome. For only $36 a cut, I walked out feeling great and I've now found a new stylist.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Oct 22, 2007Previous reviewI'm a simple kind of gal, I just have natural straight hair with a basic blowdry in the morning. I had kept my hair growing out for some time (in retrospect, bad idea) & recently relocated to the area. I always research new places, and Baliza was close. Plus they have over -50- rave reviews on Yahoo. It was time for a cut!
The shop itself is located in the Lucky's plaza, on the other end by Pizza My Heart. It is shabby chic, notches above Supercuts but not quite "Santana Row" spa-ish. I think paying over $50 for a haircut as simple as what I need (& since I can never replicate the salon the day after anyway) is outrageous. Anyway, I got a basic cut by Mindy for only $36. Sorry, but changing into a robe and getting water doesn't make the $75 worth it. Mindy was also fun to talk to, I felt that the conversation was natural--conversation at trendy places for me tend to be more contrived. Like what C.H. said, no pretentiousness, just lots of haircutting. :)
So yeah, I would recommend this place for basic cuts. I am not so sure about you trendy ones out there though, maybe go to Egomechanix instead. Plus, they use Pureology which smells great. Fairly clean place, a little crowded, but casual. I might try Tony back at Mitri once gain for comparison, since his haircuts tend to have more natural body sans styling. - Sep 6, 2011
Melissa is awesome! I've got really thick, wavy hair which isn't the easiest hair type to work with and she was great with my hair. I was able to show her a picture of what I was going for (something that would compliment my hair type) and she made it look even better than the picture. I also got a brow wax with it and everything turned out fabulous! I'll definitely be back.
The only reason it loses a star is because one of the other stylists was looking all angry and weird at me. Way to make the clientele feel comfortable! Smile... even if you don't feel happy. It's a hair salon. It's where people come to feel beautiful. Frowns and scowls just don't do it for me.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Thank you for your nice comments regarding Melissa as your stylist. I apologize for the other stylist that was making you feel uncomfortable. I agree you should be relaxed and enjoy the whole experience. Some times the other stylist will be staring because they are trying to watch the other stylist technique not realizing what the client might be feeling. I hope we will see you again.

Great place for a haircut. A bit pricey, but so are all haircuts nowadays. Plus, everyone is very friendly there!
EDIT: Don't come here. They clearly don't know what they're doing anymore. 2 failed haircuts = new lower Yelp score.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Meghan H.San Jose, CA15286Apr 5, 2013
Okay so i always LOVE a great Groupon deal but this time i think not...
Anyways so i had a few friends that have gotten eyelash extensions and they looked pretty darn good so when i received an email from Groupon for a deal of $35 bucks i couldn't resist! I took a knowledgeable constant eyelash extension wearing buddy along with me because i figured if anyone would know a good job it would be her!
Making my appointment was quick but the day of my appointment is when my problem began.. :(
I was told that ONLY Violet could do the lashes so i figured she would be great especially since Groupon sold out of refills with her. So i'll fast forward to the finished product. I was given a mirror to see the job that was done and to my surprise there was
HUGE clumps of BLACK glue used to apply the lashes, glue got into and burned my eye from the carelessness during the application process. My eyelashes were NOT separated properly so they were stuck to my other lashes making it super uncomfortable to blink, and stuck together. When my friend pointed our a few things to be fixed Violet seemed to get offended and just said they looked really nice. I guess any one will stand by the work they do even if its a horrific job. Anyways i ripped the lashes off in two days and will NEVER go back!!!!Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Taylor S.Little Elm, TX1562051Aug 31, 2009
I'm new to the area and was looking for a salon closer to home. I found Baliza on Yelp. Turns out their new location is really close to my house, which is a definite plus.
Since I'd never been there before I was assigned a stylist- Mica. In addition to being really friendly and chatty, she's REALLY talented. She did an awesome job on my brows, and my hair looks AMAZING. She not only cut all the layers, she trimmed them down so they didn't look so blunt and freshly cut.
I will absolutely be back. I can see why she has such a loyal following! Add my name to that list :DHelpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Candice B.San Jose, CA9113768Dec 14, 2012
Purchased a Groupon and I should have known better. You get what you pay for right? Not to mention I could only see Violet, who I guess rents a chair from them. I should have stuck with my gut, returned my groupon and saw Pam. Based off reviews she knows what she is doing. Now I have non-exsisting highlights and I can't have it corrected for fear my hair will fall out of my head. I have very fine, thin hair. My bangs side bangs are also so short that I have to pin them. I guess when I reminded the lady doing my hair of the photo I showed her and that I did in face want the side bangs. She just kept cutting.
Not happy. I may give this place another go in a few months, but I will probably see Pam.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nissa Z.San Francisco, CA20718560Mar 15, 2013
I actually purchased a Groupon a while back with Violet. I had my picture in hand and was ready to go. I've been looking for a new stylist since mine had moved away and everyone in between hasn't been able to listen to what I wanted.
I am sooo happy I found Violet! She consulted all the way through making sure we decided on decisions before cutting. My hair came out perfect! I love it!! It's been a while and actually time for me to stop by for a touch up! She was so sweet and fun to talk to. Looking forward to my next appt.
She also does Lash Extensions and offers other services as well!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - wendy w.San Jose, CA22511Jan 18, 2009
Girls you know how difficult it is to find someone you can trust to do your hair! I've been going to see Pam at Baliza for about 2 years now. I did venture away once because I couldn't get an appointment before I went out of town and NEVER again! Pam's amazing. She's really great about giving me some new ideas of what I can do with my hair and will let me know if something I want won't work. Have to love an honest opinion! I always walking out feeling and looking a hundred times better than when I walked in.
I've always had really thin, long, lifeless hair and she's recommended a new cut and it looks like I have a ton more hair and so much shape to it and it's short! I should have done this a long time ago!
Make sure you call and make an appointment with her before you go in! She get's booked up pretty quick.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mama Q.San Jose, CA13324055Sep 7, 2013
Joey is awesome! I found him through Groupon when I bought an express Brazilian Blowout. I wasn't too sure what to expect compared to a full blowout, but the express was that - about 1.5 hours compared to 3, but the results were the same, and the express was much cheaper! Joey says the express lasts shorter than the full (8 weeks vs 12 weeks), but with proper care, the results can last longer. As for Joey, he is totally the stylist you see at the high end salons but without the snootiness. Such a down to earth yet very talented stylist! I had such a great time talking to him that time just flew!
Bottom line - Joey is awesome - I love my hair - I will definitely be back :)Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Samantha B.San Jose, CA96142Mar 10, 2014
Unprofessional.
(I had to give them a star. If it were up to me, I'd give none.)
I bought a Groupon for a Brazilian Blowout and was excited to try out Joey Baliza. I called them times over the course of a couple of weeks and got no response. I left voicemail messages with my cell phone number to make an appointment and never once did I get a call back. I even reached out to Groupon who contacted the salon in my behalf and Groupon said I would receive a call in three business days. Five business days later and no call.
Don't do business with them. They don't care about adding new customers or treating them with enough respect to at least call them back.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
