I didn't want to have to say this, but I must - Canz is one step above Hooters. The decor is wood paneling with hub caps and beer signs on the walls. I have to say, the back room, which is more airy and includes a wall of barrels, was neat, and I could imagine hanging out there with some friends after work. The waitresses were all very nice and all smiles - wearing more than a Hooters girl, for sure.
You got to love the 48 beer on tap! The food menu is also pretty extensive and includes bar fare.
It'll be interesting to see how this place fares in Astoria.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Star E.Flushing, NY2410515Sep 23, 2011
For a sports bar, I must say I really liked this place. I went for the UFC fight, so it got very crowded and noisy, but thats all part of the fun. I love the bar height tables and chairs. I also like that they have such a large selection of beers, but once i discovered this amazing cider on tap, I didn't need to try anything else.
The chicken wings with ranch dip on the side were finger licking good. I also had the half rack ribs with sweet potato waffle fries. The ribs were really good and I was a little skeptical at first of the brown sugar on the fries, but they were an amazing complement to the ribs.
Service was surprisingly quick and the prices are decent. I would definitely go back.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Jas. B.Hollywood, CA204203160Jul 6, 2011
Close to home with big selection of DRAFT, I really enjoy their flight ($6 for 4) its a great deal.. allow you to try different kinds.... As I personally LOVES Guinness, I yet have requested for 4 of the same.. Maybe next time I come back, which will be soon...
Btw, the girls dress like hooters gal except in black, and younger. Don't expect them to know much of the beer or ask for suggestion.. They will just give you whatever.. hahaa.
Next time you are thirsty, let me know and we go drink. =)Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Laura J.Woodhaven, NY1002732Jul 20, 2011
Love it here. The nachos with steak and guac are so good, they use skirt steak which is my fave type of steak and it goes perfectly with the nachos. The wing are spicy!!!!!! I mean I thought I could hang but these wings had me gulping my drink after every bite. Blue moon always comes with two orange slices making the Blue moon here even better than anywhere else.
I wouldn't recommend the shark attack. Finally had a fish bowl and it was too sweet. maybe its just because I'm not a fan of sweet but I would rather stick to Blue Moon than drink this diabetes causing drink.
I don't know what these reviewers are talking about the waitresses are not rude or snobs. Totally nice girls and very attentive.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 13411482Jan 9, 2012
A bar with a lot of Beer and a lot of testosterone. Not sure about how they advertise their name on the women's shirts "do you like our canz?" but I am sure 10-15 years ago I would have loved it. Maybe I have grown up and realized how to treat women as more than objects (that's for the women in my life).
Foodwise, the burgers looked pretty damn delicious!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Chris S.Astoria, NY37Jun 18, 2010
Jesus christ where to start with this place. Obviously it's a hooters. We all know that.
Like other reviewers I'm going to say the service is shit. But I can't blame the canz girls i guess, they gotta work the jerk offs in Affliction and Ed Hardy shirts for those tips. But in the mean time as they're working the other patrons, I'm without booze or food.
The place is called Canz, they have lots of beer in can form. Try not and get anything off the tap since the times I've gone the various bartenders couldn't get a proper pour off, even with Bud. Stick with the cans.
Also, seems like they charge extra at the bar for your booze. When sitting at the bar a can of Iron City was like 5.50, at a table it was 5 even.
Food was subpar, much like a hooters, so they got that going for them. If you like tits, TV's and agro jerk offs, give it a shot. Otherwise, I don't know, drink by yourself in your apartment. Even if you have friends, just drink by yourself.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 8Oh no 0 - Edward J.Astoria, NY29264Jun 11, 2010
My roommates and I were curious about this place since it opened last week. We went tonight and it was pretty much what I predicted: not good.
As others have mentioned, the service leaves a lot to be desired. We ordered a round of beer and waited for more than 7 minutes.
The bar was not crowded for a Friday, but it's new so you'd expect that. The folks there were nice and all, but server visits were few and far between.
We ordered chicken tacos and two orders of the fried chicken sandwich. It really looked that good but it just wasn't. The food was COLD. While it may say the food is made fresh, it definitely isn't made from fresh ingredients. I have nothing good to say about the food (and that is saying something, I am so not a foodie, I have awful taste...)
Yeah, there are a lot of beers, and yeah, they have lots of TVs with games. But the music is loud, the service is slow, and the food is cold.
In all, definitely too expensive for what I got out of it. I might come back for the brunch a bit later just because I'm merciful and understanding, but really, there are SO MANY BETTER PLACES IN ASTORIA! This place just feels like a chain.Helpful 8Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0 - Nick K.San Francisco, CA50377565Nov 22, 2010
I can't help but get excited when a new bar/restaurant opens in my neighborhood. Unfortunately, sometimes you regret that excitement.
Two reasons to like this place:
1) Free popcorn
2) Joose
Five reasons to hate this place:
1) Poor use of the letter Z in the name and all over the menu
2) Tacky Hooters-esque decor and cheeseball service
3) Horribly priced drafts (I know, I should be drinking cans, but still)
4) Average bar fare (unappealing wing specials)
5) It's a super meaty sports bar
If you're into TVs, charlatans, bros and themes, then you might like this place. Otherwise, avoid it at all costs. There are a lot better places in the neighborhood.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Ran C.Los Angeles, CA3239942Jun 21, 2010
I think Yelpers are being a little hard on this place. I do agree that the service is really hit-or-miss for now, but I think that's something that will definitely get fleshed out over the next few weeks. If it doesn't, then I'll revisit this review.
I hate the phrase, but it is what it is. If you're planning to go to Canz to get educated on fermentable sugars or in any kind of a hurry, you're in the wrong place. This is not a spot to find the best ____ in town...it's a different type of place like nowhere else in Astoria where you can go with friends to relax, try some new beers, and catch the end of the game.
If I were them, I'd nix the stale popcorn in favor of peanuts--much easier to keep fresh--and people always love throwing peanut shells on the floor. Also, I think they need to strike the price of domestic cans waaaay down. Bud/Miller/Coors should be $2.
It's easy to rag on this place--especially on Yelp, but if you know what to expect and go for the right reasons, it can be a lot of fun. Maybe it's just the Midwesterner in me, but every once in a while, I like to hit up an Applebees--this just has a little more local flare and a much bigger beer selection.
I've been to Canz quite a few times now and the clientele has really varied on each visit. Some nights its couples, other nights middle-aged folks, and other nights it's overrun by dudes. I think this place is still getting its identity, but in the meantime, I plan to keep going and will draw my own conclusion.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0 - Mike W.Astoria, NY11813Nov 23, 2010
TACKY.
Have been to this place too many times, and have always left disappointed by the luke warm food that takes far too long to arrive; bartenders and waitresses who don't have a clue; overpriced drafts; and the swarming mass of idiocy adorned in tapout, affliction, and ed hardy douchebaggery.
do yourself a favor, go to blackbirds or dillingers if you want a proper pour and plate of wings.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0
